It doesn't show that same crap we're fed every day, that we've been fed for a hundred years, that war is some kind of romantic adventure, where the end result is either a heroic death with the last words "I'm glad I died for my country", or a triumphant return home in one piece having surrounded with flags. But this film tells what's in-between, you're not dead, and you're not healthy, just a maimed half corpse, comes home as just a target of pity and disgust.
Interesting the comparisons between the war in 'Nam and the current war in Afghanistan. Vietnam there was no support for the troops, free press, cultural uproar. In Afghanistan, there's 100% support for the troops (mostly), integrated press, and next to no protest.
And both wars are coming out the exact same, kids coming home in wheelchairs and body bags.

@Blackie3chan Probably hearing a noise that reminded him of something from the war. My brother does it when he hears things clanging around in the washing machine (he's a veteran of Iraq). Sometimes veterans do that because of Post Traumatic Stress.

Ye gods, it never ceases to amaze me how many political experts there are on YT, making all sorts of comments about foreign policy etc. Whatever your stance (personally I think Vietnam was just a big mess almost bound to happen, but I'm no expert) but why not take some of that "expertise" you profess and do something productive with it.

i agree. when he looks at his high school wrestling picture. he realizes all his lost potential. when his father is describing the bathroom improvements. it all seems so futile and sad. how his father tries to connect with his son. a man he doesnt really recognize now. when they hug it is one of the MOST intense moments in cinematic history for me. instant tears...

5:37. That scene is really well-played. Must confess, I shed a tear. I think this scene shows alot about the movie's message; that what matters is how the people you love and love you are the important people in this world. If we all held that principle I believe there would less conflict and dispare in the world.
But that's just my humble opinion.
