I was there in the front row...what a show... thanks, Bruce from the Sweaty, stinky, hot and humid blonde from Daytona.................Can't wait to see you agian...Next time I WILL get on the Stage....
And what a show in Tampa with the BOSS playing for 3 hours...He loved those kids and gave them a memory they will never forget. Bruce your AWESOME and the kids loved you. Thanks Bruce!!
Man I remember this tour. I was 19 and Bruce in my book was at his peak. Still skinny (not buffed) scrawny and messy looking but soooo cool! Worked the crowd better then anyone before or after him. Have every cd except Born in the USA. Bruce lost alot of old fans on that tour. Some came back some did not. Alot of people felt he totally sold out and to some degree he did. I came back when he went solo in 1992 and like what he has done ever since.
ortleyman: You couldn't be more wrong. Bruce didn't sell out w/ BITUSA , nor did he lose fans, let alone "alot" of them. Blame the media, if you will, but Bruce can't be blamed for the rest of the world FINALLY noticing his GREATNESS. In fact he blasted Reagan for mentioning the title song in one of his campaign speeches. It always kills me when ppl call someone a "sell out" 'cause they got to be bigger than life. Maybe you should explain your definition of "sell out", & get some FACTS on fans.
Selling out: When you cut a vid that looks like your Elvis on steroids, write poppy tunes to attract poppy people, play songs to a disco beat and mess with a GIANT BEAR on stage if you are a TRUE Bruce fan you could raise the question. Is this guy totally selling out to attract a mainstream audience. The band still had a cult following up until Landau advised Bruce to get away from songs like Jungleland and Backstreets to sell more records. Thats selling out in my book.
I can see your point. I didn't care for the Bear, or the discoed up Dancing in the Dark. The Dancing in the Dark vid, a bit corny, & contrived for my liking also, BUT, remember this was the MTV era, where every artist was making cheesy videos. He resisted almost 3 years before putting out a vid, and that was Atlantic City, & he wasn't even in it. He believed that the listeners imagination would be lost with the advent of videos....thats NOT selling out. We all succumb to technology eventually.
He also discoed up Cover Me. But thats beside the point. You raise a good point about the MTV era. Even the Clash were putting out lame vids like Rock the Casbah. The point I was trying to get at was it was a difficult time for hardcore Bruce fans because he did get away from the formula that made the band so badass. Bruce's image as a sex symbol (I feel) overshadowed the ESB. Also, Stevie leaving did not help matters either.
Ben c'est un peu la grosse cavalerie, les décibels et tout et tout. Moi je la préfère en français, par Zachary Richard, par exemple. Parole de française !
What a great flashback! I remember being on summer break from high school and we slept outside the Horizon for a day and a half for tix. Got 6th row center first night and saw all 3 shows. Couple dozen shows later, he still rocks!
I was at this show! We were behind the stage, at the Rosemont Horizon. This was Bruce at his prime...without the teleprompter. One night later we were out front in the lower arena, and I think there was another show as well. This was at the end of the "River" Tour - the dates were made up from cancellations in July, due to "extreme exhaustion."
Wish I had seen a Springsteen show in 1981, and to see him perform this great singalong song

It should be looked at by who ever thought that he sold out for 2 years that he got right back to the old self by making Tunnel Of Love.
