  • In addition to incomparable skill and genius, Jaco was also blessed with very large hands that could probably have given a 5 -6 fret stretch with relative ease. And of course, we've all been blessed with Jaco's legacy of redefining how the electric bass can be played. I personally envy the natural ability he had to swing at any tempo.

  • that is too awesome! what can i say ...the master....love when he comes back to shut off the pedal...LOL ! RIP JACO...

  • i like doing that put a little bass lick on a loop solo on bass over it

  • if only i could get half as good as jaco id be satisfied

  • @ewfmatthew if you could get an eigth as good as Jaco you'd still be the most talented bassist alive

  • :) So cool!

  • jimi hendrix would be proud

  • @clolom95 too bad he played guitar.

  • @henrytod- no, he would be proud cause if you listen to jimi alot, youll notice that jaco is playing the jimi hendrix song "thrird stone from the sun" at 1:34. look up the song and you will see he is quoting it.

  • this... I feel like it detailed his emotions.... he was bipolar, and he had high's (the overlayed parts) and lows (distortioned parts). its really really.. powerful

  • @buefyYT I think you're just reading into it too much.

  • @lolgiggetyroflomg he just got bored right? sigh... you don't realize that people USED to actually put their emotions into their playing

  • sky high

  • Yeah Man!!!! JACO!!!!

  • live on jaco may your spirits live within us :( R.I.P Jaco

  • like no other

  • My God how he nails the harmonics!

  • I swear he looks like Saul from Pineapple Express lol

  • @deathtax10 no, Saul looks like Jaco...

  • @deathtax10 Yeah I know James Franco with long hair does ressemble him a bit.

  • YESS so proud to be going to the same school he went to

  • he almost played the starwars themesong at the begining

  • Was and still is the Master...It's Jaco's world, we're just living in it, trying to catch up.

  • Is this version tabbed? :3

  • Pop Quiz: what Hendrix song does Jaco play a smidge in this clip?

    Ready, set GO!

  • @kibbles1053 You should see the clip of him playing in this in 1978. He plays We Gotta Live Together and Them Changes along with Third Stone

  • this is the grooviest shit i have ever heard.

  • That groove from 2:42-3:16 is tasty.

  • Sad and ironic that in so many art forms one has to sort of lose it to channel that pure creative genius. Jaco was an odd duck with some unquestionable issues. He was also beyond groundbreaking and did things with a bass long thought impossible.

I do love his devil-may-care approach to fashion, too.

  • We Met @ the 'Dillo ...

  • My Favorite Jaco Encounter ...

  • fresh

  • sweet

  • how to u get a bass to sound like that

  • @fantden12

All you have to do to fully replicate the sound is be Jaco Pastorius

  • what effects does he use for the tone

  • @volcomscooter29 i believe its because its a frettless bass

  • @volcomscooter29 - Combination of the bass with custom defret job he did himself, strings (used round wounds on a fretless which eats up the fretboard, he got around this by using an epoxy finish on the fretboard), and his amp choices. He typically used the delay in a chorus-like mode, providing a shimmering stereo doubling effect. He would often use the fuzz control built in on the Acoustic 361. For the bass solo "Slang" on the 8:30 album, Pastorius used the MXR digital delay to layer a chord

  • 2:40 - 3:00 that is so fuckn groove

  • jaco will live FOREVER!!! he is the greatest!!!

  • I love how he just walks away while playing and then comes back without his bass lol

  • A true pioneer...what talent!!!

  • anybody notice tht the drummer cant bop his head in time?

  • jaco is awsome im a big fan R.I.P.

  • Why does he remind me of an Avatar?

  • @DaSlushKing Well, "avatar" defined is 'a manifestation of a deity or released soul in bodily form on Earth; an incarnate divine teacher.' So yeah, I see whatcha mean.

...yeah I know you meant the movie :-P

Jaco's got too much black soul to be blue, though.

  • someday, i wish to be as good as him. he's my all time hero.

  • Saw him do this solo at Merryweather at a Joni Mitchell concert, blew my mind. After overlaying about 3-4 recordings on his digital recorder and building the solo to an unbelievable symphonic array, he lays down the bass, walks off stage, then comes running out with a leather belt and goes wap wap wap on the bass and runs back off. Greatest electric bass solo I ever saw along with the wildest piece of showmanship in the history of music. And I've seen them all.

  • i am sorry to say but i am thinking before every consert jaco has he smokes weed thats why he plays so dam good

  • @zigzagwiz69

You should be sorry. That statement is very stupid.

    Feel bad about it.

  • There are two eras of the modern electric bass. The electric bass before Jaco, and the electric bass after Jaco. One of my all time musical heroes.

  • I had a bass instructor a couple of years ago who showed me Pastorius. I'm still not sure I totally appreciate his music, but some of it definitely hits home. This is my favorite thing I've heard Jaco play.

  • he is a god...............

  • Comment removed

  • god?

  • Anyone have tabs for this? I NEED them.

  • I'm not sure you can tab this especially around 2:11.

  • @BlainoBassPlayer dude...you really think there would be tabs for this lol

  • Use your ears.

  • This is amazing.

  • Indeed- Pastorius suffered from bipolar disorder, and the super frantic part with all the harmonics in the midst of the funkiness really reflects that, I think.

  • sweet

  • i need help... how would i go about puting this video onto like a powerpoint presentation for highschoolers? anybody @ all that can help is the best, other than Jaco of couse

    thanks, andything is appriciated

    -Joey

  • It almost seems futile. Most high schoolers (unless they go to an art school) will probably NOT understand the awesomeness that was Jaco.

  • @edthehead83 dude, at my school literally no one i have met so far knows who jaco is. ....at all its sad they talk like flea and cliff burton were the only bassist around

  • It's sad really. I go to a pretty diverse school so it's not so bad in my case when it comes to musical ignorance.

  • @edthehead83 everyone is just into what they hear on the radio

  • @jryuwah i totally feel you...when i was in high school i was in the school jazz band (even though ive progressed alot better now theory and technique wise than back then) and i studied jaco like crazy...all the metal heads would be cliff burton yea!!!!!!!!! flea yea!!!!!!!! that dude from AS BLOOD RUNS BLACK yea!!!!!! then i showed them jaco and they said

"dude.....holy fuckin shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! are u serious??? thats insane!! wtf????"

and changed their whole perpective of bass

  • @doublethumpbass89 LOL XD,yeah its surprising to see how little people know of the bass guitar and jaco, but if someone ever says "the bass is easy" and "anyone can play it" just report him to port of entry and havona those two songs work every time, i showed one of my friends havona for the first time at school and he was out of it when he heard it. I'm pretty much where you are right now when you were in high school. I'm in my little "jaco phase" studying all his music and what not.

  • @jryuwah dude stick with that jaco phase and i promise

youll learn alot and eventually learn his techniques and style...dont give up just keep studying theory (scales, arpeggios, chords, key changes etc) and learn those techniques

  • @doublethumpbass89 ohh you bet im sticking with it, i dont see myself getting out of this phase any time soon. pretty much every bass player has been in it lol.

  • @doublethumpbass89 I wouldn't say a metal head loves Flea. And I still like Flea more then Jaco. Not saying he's better, just that I like Flea. Though my bass playing strays more towards funk. Any suggestions of some things I should look up by this guy?

  • @biscuitdhayes The Chicken (there is a really good version where they are in the studio with a trio - super funky), teen town, come on come over, river people, that's a good start... they may not be traditional funk but they def. have the influence of such.

  • @biscuitdhayes dude listen to Havona By Weather Report and...well..just listen and be amazed

  • @biscuitdhayes

    Teen Town for sure

  • haha dude i'm in high schooler and i study this guy as much as i can, i would get something fretless like he plays but sadly, i don't have the money, and don't wanna rip the frets out of a vintage 5 string ibanez

  • @meeebit get the squier vintage modified fretless, it even looks like his!

  • Cool

  • Listen To The King!!

  • RIGHT ON!!
