In addition to incomparable skill and genius, Jaco was also blessed with very large hands that could probably have given a 5 -6 fret stretch with relative ease. And of course, we've all been blessed with Jaco's legacy of redefining how the electric bass can be played. I personally envy the natural ability he had to swing at any tempo.
@henrytod- no, he would be proud cause if you listen to jimi alot, youll notice that jaco is playing the jimi hendrix song "thrird stone from the sun" at 1:34. look up the song and you will see he is quoting it.
this... I feel like it detailed his emotions.... he was bipolar, and he had high's (the overlayed parts) and lows (distortioned parts). its really really.. powerful
Sad and ironic that in so many art forms one has to sort of lose it to channel that pure creative genius. Jaco was an odd duck with some unquestionable issues. He was also beyond groundbreaking and did things with a bass long thought impossible.
I do love his devil-may-care approach to fashion, too.
@volcomscooter29 - Combination of the bass with custom defret job he did himself, strings (used round wounds on a fretless which eats up the fretboard, he got around this by using an epoxy finish on the fretboard), and his amp choices. He typically used the delay in a chorus-like mode, providing a shimmering stereo doubling effect. He would often use the fuzz control built in on the Acoustic 361. For the bass solo "Slang" on the 8:30 album, Pastorius used the MXR digital delay to layer a chord
@DaSlushKing Well, "avatar" defined is 'a manifestation of a deity or released soul in bodily form on Earth; an incarnate divine teacher.' So yeah, I see whatcha mean.
...yeah I know you meant the movie :-P
Jaco's got too much black soul to be blue, though.
Saw him do this solo at Merryweather at a Joni Mitchell concert, blew my mind. After overlaying about 3-4 recordings on his digital recorder and building the solo to an unbelievable symphonic array, he lays down the bass, walks off stage, then comes running out with a leather belt and goes wap wap wap on the bass and runs back off. Greatest electric bass solo I ever saw along with the wildest piece of showmanship in the history of music. And I've seen them all.
I had a bass instructor a couple of years ago who showed me Pastorius. I'm still not sure I totally appreciate his music, but some of it definitely hits home. This is my favorite thing I've heard Jaco play.
Indeed- Pastorius suffered from bipolar disorder, and the super frantic part with all the harmonics in the midst of the funkiness really reflects that, I think.
i need help... how would i go about puting this video onto like a powerpoint presentation for highschoolers? anybody @ all that can help is the best, other than Jaco of couse
@edthehead83 dude, at my school literally no one i have met so far knows who jaco is. ....at all its sad they talk like flea and cliff burton were the only bassist around
@jryuwah i totally feel you...when i was in high school i was in the school jazz band (even though ive progressed alot better now theory and technique wise than back then) and i studied jaco like crazy...all the metal heads would be cliff burton yea!!!!!!!!! flea yea!!!!!!!! that dude from AS BLOOD RUNS BLACK yea!!!!!! then i showed them jaco and they said
"dude.....holy fuckin shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! are u serious??? thats insane!! wtf????"
@doublethumpbass89 LOL XD,yeah its surprising to see how little people know of the bass guitar and jaco, but if someone ever says "the bass is easy" and "anyone can play it" just report him to port of entry and havona those two songs work every time, i showed one of my friends havona for the first time at school and he was out of it when he heard it. I'm pretty much where you are right now when you were in high school. I'm in my little "jaco phase" studying all his music and what not.
@jryuwah dude stick with that jaco phase and i promise
youll learn alot and eventually learn his techniques and style...dont give up just keep studying theory (scales, arpeggios, chords, key changes etc) and learn those techniques
@doublethumpbass89 ohh you bet im sticking with it, i dont see myself getting out of this phase any time soon. pretty much every bass player has been in it lol.
@doublethumpbass89 I wouldn't say a metal head loves Flea. And I still like Flea more then Jaco. Not saying he's better, just that I like Flea. Though my bass playing strays more towards funk. Any suggestions of some things I should look up by this guy?
@biscuitdhayes The Chicken (there is a really good version where they are in the studio with a trio - super funky), teen town, come on come over, river people, that's a good start... they may not be traditional funk but they def. have the influence of such.
haha dude i'm in high schooler and i study this guy as much as i can, i would get something fretless like he plays but sadly, i don't have the money, and don't wanna rip the frets out of a vintage 5 string ibanez
