Note on backwards comparability:

The older chips needed to support older games become more expensive to produce over time. (Supply and demand, one would assume). This is why the original DS did not support GameBoy games. The price of the DS would have risen substantially if they had included the additional hardware. I assume this is the same for the 3DS not being backwards compatible with GBA games (Which makes me super sad).

I feel like backwards compatibility is becoming less of an issue due to digital stores. At least some of the earlier titles are making it to these online platforms, and as we go forward it should be the new norm. It would be nice if they let the mod community help speed up the process of moving the legacy games to the digital store.

I *MUST* correct you on something. Re backwards compatibility, Xbox 360s still can play SOME original Xbox games to my recollection. The compatibility list itself is final as of November 2007, but it does NOT mean that Microsoft stopped supporting backwards compatibility, you can still play the games on the compatibility list.

About the backwards compatibility, it's so they can resell you your old games you already paid for and at inflated prices becuase a physical copy goes often for less than $10 used while inferior digital versions that can;t be resold or transferred by you go for $19.99 plus. Also they save money by not having to put the chips, software etc inside the machines, basically as a consumer it a lose, then lose again situation, for them its a win win.
