I doubt it hyenas aren't exactly known for killing their prey before they eat it, although with a clan there they might have eaten it faster and so killed it faster.

Lions usually do that's why they're known as the noble hunter, but it could be a misgiven title as nobody knows whether they do it out of convenience, compassion, or instinct.

this is unusual behaviour on the lion's part eating the buffalo alive like that, usually once they have theyr'e prey grounded they go for a throat bite

or suffocation by grabbing onto the prey's mouth, and restrict they're breathing this is the case when a pride hunt large prey like buffalo. this behaviour is normally associated with the hyena, they don't have the weapons the big cats have to bring down prey, they work on the leg and hindquarterss to bring them down then eat them alive

if a buffalo is alone then its target and a lone male lion can kill it on its own. a lion isnt dumb and wouldn't go after a herd a buffalo on its own. thats why they normally hunt as a team. but one on one, adult buffalo and male lion, it could go either way but the lion is capable of taking down a lone buffalo on its own.

I also saw a lion on the back of a buffalo that was near a watering hole. All the lion did was push the snout of the buffalo down into the water and waited for it to drown and fall. Lions are pretty powerful but I beleive that the buffalo wasn't full grown.
