Great rendition from a great artist... not to take anything away from Pete Seeger's which I also love! To have this song played by such musicians makes me very proud to live on the Ohio-Erie canal at the intersection of the Greenville Treaty line and the Lake Erie & Wheeling railroad in Bolivar, Ohio!
My Uncle traveled to the Erie canal before he died at met with the branch of our family that still lives there. He was digging into our family history and found that our clan had helped dig the canal and had worked it. The house on the canal that they had lived in for generations was still there and they had bought it back after it had passed out of the family 80 or so years back.

I should mention, I recall learning as I grew up that the "neighbor" in this song was supposed to be the donkey who pulled the boat down the Erie canal....

The Pete Seeger version is quite up-lifting in a way but I much prefer this version, really, really eerie (ironically)

They must be really miserable in Belfast - 'cause damn they were loud on that chorus, too! Maybe it was all a tribute to Sal.

Oh we'll sing anything miserable. Your misery is mine.
