Clark dismissed that as his punishment and said OH WELL. Then he gets shot and pays the price for his stupidity. Jor-El says someone will die in his place. So all the decisions he made in the premiere came back to haunt him in Reckoning.

Clark had lost his abilities in this episode, and it was Gabriel, a man who had a strong infatuation with Chloe, that shot him.

As Clark passes away, Lionel Luthor, locked up in an asylum, awakens, he being the vessel for Jor-El on Earth - a human specimen that Jor-El could operate through should Jor-El's son, Kal-El (or Clark), ever need his aid. It turns out that his need was no greater than in this moment, when Clark passes away.
