Beta was awesome, the movie cameras were just one piece and at the time the VHS cameras had a seperate suitcase piece or something. I burrowed mine from my dad and made a movie before James ever made one called tales from the batcave with my friend. I wish I progressed like he did though, I became a big failure and he became a God. Thats okay I like watching his stuff its real good
Haha these videos are so entertaining and hes only talking about video formats lol. James you need your own TV show seriously, you could be on HBO or Showtime that way you wont get edited.
The little screws under the channel puttons were to tune in the channels. If you wanted to record anything from tv. i remember i had a vhs recorder that looked quite similar
Hes got all kinds of old shit in his house! Not just old consoles I mean I can understand collecting older game consoles but not old movie format players
Note to anyone who dares to get into the Beta format, the player alone will set you back a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. Yeah, it's that rare.
I had a TV with those yellow dials back in the day. U tune each station manually by twisting around the corresponding dial and observing the yellow arrow. It was difficult enough to do with my 10yo fingers, don't think I'd manage it with big 30yo fingers
I bet they brought out DVD just so that you had to repurchase your entire VHS collection. And what really annoys me is that there are still movies available on VHS only! :D
When DVD launched in 1997 it had major improvements in Picture/Sound Quality over VHS.
The videotape inside a VHS Tape gets thinner every time you play them, but you probably gotta play the tape over and over again.
The only VHS tapes I kept were the Disney Movies and The Star Wars Trilogy. Some of my Disney VHS Tapes are a little over 20 years now and they still play perfect.
Lol, at my school we are still using betacam/betamax for studio recordings (im studying television) and it is not because we are poor here in sweden or something, its because it is so fucking awesome with the old fashion, analog systems!
Those little yellow pots and switches are indeed to tune the individual channel slots (many older TVs and VCRs that had this type of setup came with interchangeable channel numbers that could be placed in the slots once tuned). Most likely this unit is not cable-ready, either - standard NTSC VHF/UHF.
I still have a Sony Betamax even today and it works well, Its always special to me cause I used to record hours n hours of tom n jerry during my childhood, lol. I think even in the early 90s they used to release tons of movies on the Beta but pretty soon it died out.
lol, I too have a VHSc tape recorder with lots of tapes to spare... But a lot of the tapes (including my VHS) have gotten garbled by maybe cosmic radiation, solar flares or random geomagnetic anomalies.
Up until this year my high school's broadcast class had to use though VHS-C's to shoot outside footage with until this year when they finally upgraded to digital.
i had that same machine growing up and those dials under the channel select where to tune in higher channels it came with a numbered sticker you still only had ten choices but you could choose the top channels you would watch or record
I still have a video camera that uses VHS-C tapes! I never had the transforming adapter though, I had to plug the camera into the TV with RCA cables to watch them.
those little yellowy things under the channel selectors were for tuning the channels in so you could record of tv or another beta/vhs player but vhs were a nightmare for taping of beta cos thay had alot of frequency and interference problems.
I guess I am a "nutcase" to, due to still use my beta machine!! But was a better format then VHS by far, when it comes to picture quality, VHS only made it due to pornography. Adult content was not available on Betamax (Sony would not allow it) while it was becoming readily available on VHS. And the longer record time on VHS, which means full movies, by the time sony cameout with beta II, which held more then 1 hour, most rental store stocked VHS, so it what killed the beta format
There's an epsode of Cowboy Bebop where the main characters scour the ruins of an Earth city in search of a Beta unit. And go through all kinds of misadventures in getting it.
@ 2:51 Back then, each of the channels on a VCR (and Betamax apparently) had to be manually tuned to a particular signal. For example, you would set channel 2 to show a certain channel, channel 3 to show another channel, and so on. Those white and yellow controls were used to manually set each channel to a station. Please note that you only had to do this if you had an over-the-air antenna directly connected to your VCR (or Betamax).
I hardly doubt this generation knows what a VHS tape is. I grew up with this, I used to watch them all the time, and seeing them again brings back pretty nostalgic feelings.
lol, I learned to edit on beta, but I was more interested in film-making than editing news stories.. this was 1998, I'm not sure what news stations use now, but it still looks outdated to me..
I watch VHS all the time. My VHs to DVD ratio is 2:1 so upgrading all VHS would take forever. I like fastforwarding and just watching a movie, forget the menu. I watch VHS as much as I watch dvd
I had a Beta and the little switches were the tuners for each channel. When this was attached to a tv antenna you had to tune starting with channel 2 by spinning the little dial until your channel was clear. Then push the next number and yes it was a pain in the ass
i got the same betamax player which is cool, but i had it all threw out while everyone else had vhs's, i had to always use the family vhs player but at least the betamax has many and i do mean many connectors on the back to hook up dvd players, ps3's etc which i still do to this day if someones old ass tv didn't have connectors or didn't work for some odd reason...
