  • william, i been watching your videos since shortly after japan COMPLETELY cut off info. i watched a french guy too but he was VERY emotional and at the mercy of the govt. i have idea for video. make one asking why all videos are jerky, etc? any kid with a jap quad chopper can film the SFP and if rad destroys the elec. then everything saved to the controller will be beautiful vid (stabilized; these children are amazing). ergo, japs have 1000s of good vids i want to see to evaluate damage.

  • The whole world is concern and we are very upset about Japanese reactors nuclear meltdowns, and all gov leaders reactions. Canada is very concern about nuclear and know that there is a tragedy not told to world people. We talk about it here and obviously see all the gov reactions. WE ARE SHOKED. WE discuss about how to show to the WORLD people that we have lost all liberty. We had a sign from the meltdowns and many people wake up with this defenning silence of the of major medias

  • Where can I get a Geiger counter?

  • @IbarakiStyle The best place is probably on-line. There are many Japanese as well as U.S. and other country based stores that sell them. If you want to check food however, do some research first because Geiger counters are not the best tool for the job. At the very least to get any meaningful results you need a "pancake" style probe and an ability to do long timed readings.

  • @AluminumStudios I live in the us, I am concerned with Canon and other brands that still manufacture cameras (DSLR) & lenses in japan.

Think you can do a video on cameras and lenses? (5d mark II, 7d, 1D & lenses)

  • @CEEPMDEE That is an interesting idea, although I'd have to take a different approach from just walking into the store. I'd have to explain people are anxious and ask permission to test the lenses. Realistically things produced outside (foods, building materials, wood, etc), are suspect. I don't have much concern about glass/metal/plastic products. But without testing you can never be sure.

  • @CEEPMDEE do cameras have radioactive components? if they do, what about the cell phone cameras? the one i got has one each way. now you got me wondering.

  • OMG ! does it mean this country is fuc*ed ?! poor Japanese...

  • Granite worktop? Try living on top of moorland that contains nothing but granite underneath the soil. Houses have to be tested for Radon and everything need proper ventilation to stop any build ups.

  • @Elle7491 radon has caused more lung cancers than tobacco. we live in swamp but sympathise. even with ur house off the ground and plastic and vents, there is no way to tell if you safe without testing it regular. just a thought. i guess every upside has its downside. whole towns have moved cause of fires and sinkholes. sad. thanks.

  • this is crazy!

  • thanks!!!

    Good video!!!

  • RE: Thorium Mantles tend to disintegrate into the air when they are burnt for light, so that inhaling the Thorium gas mantle particles (Contamination.) may indicate an even greater health risk.

  • @FrankensteinFinance Thanks for the comments and good points. To make it worse, it's not only Thorium that one might inhale/ingest, it's decay products (Radium, Radon, Bismuth, Pollonium, etc. are also present. In fact Radon volatilizes in the first few minutes of burning, so when you use a lantern after not using it for a while, it puts out some Radon gas for you to breath...

  • @AluminumStudios I listened to the video again, and you cover possible radioactive nuclide/isotope contamination hazard through inhalation.

On a different subject, ..slightly, ..you may find this software interesting and perhaps valuable.

"Pulse Recorder and Analyser - PRA is free software !

...designed to use a computer with a sound adapter as an multichannel analyser and scaler...purpose of the application is to record and analyse signals received from a radiation detectors..."

  • @FrankensteinFinance Thanks! I've been wanting to find software like that ever since I saw a video where it looked like someone was using it, but I didn't know what it was called.

  • Thanks!..That was an enormously informative video.

It is possible to see also that as long as the Thorium mantle remains outside the body it can be considered"background radiation".

Radioactive 'contamination/inhalation/ingestion might include breathing the fine particles generated by the Thorium mantle into the air whilst reading in a camping tent at night using a lamp that incorporates a Thorium mantle to create light.

In this case, the user of the Thorium lantern risks inhaling the Thorium.

  • Have you tried TIG welding rods, they contain some thorium. Be very careful about trying to use a dose rate measurement from a GM tube system calibrated for one isotope for another isotope.

  • @DrMarkForeman No, I haven't measured them yet. I do say at the end of the video that my geiger counters are calibrated for cesium and hence the numbers are inaccurate.

  • Wow, I didn't know this. Your videos are smart. You're right, here in California In my local Wal Mart I haven't seen any thorium mantles, just kerosene and battery and solar lamps. So maybe it is because of the radiation?

  • I got one of those mantles, my SOEKS got 6.40 microseiverts from it... unreal, i made a vid on it in my channel

  • Excellent video! I hope the Japanese people are seeing this and will take the necessary steps and move out of harms way. It's clear, their government is trying to kill them.

  • You are a good man , very smart and intelligent and thanks for sharing your wisom.

    Love and peace

  • I remember my physics teacher in Germany bought one of them to show off a geiger counter during class. Not sure if the radioactive ones are still sold in Germany. 20 years ago that might have been OK but today i wonder why they dont use LED lamps or at least alternate mantles.

  • Hi again, I realise it is the thorium in the mantles that you were concerned about. It's good you are warning people. I know the propane isn't radioactive; however I thought the open flame in a area of contamination might have an affect on some radioactive particles in the air around us, or as in the case of a water heater, in the water. I guess it was just time for our water heater to break down. I got scared, as I compared fires in radioactive areas also release radiation.

  • Hi William, thank you for your informative video. I wanted to buy one of those lamps when we had blackouts here in Japan, but I guess they may not be the best choice. If this is happening to the filters of lamps; I was wondering about combustion and radiation in the air in our propane gas water heater? And room heaters? We recently had to replace the water heater, and I the gas man came to measure the gas fixtures just before it stopped producing hot water and let out gas only, candles safe?

  • @Heather3289 The problem isn't with things that burn fuel or the fuel, as I explain it is specifically mantles which are used for the sole purpose of creating light in lanterns (they are not filters.) Some contain thorium which improve their brightness and that is radioactive. The propane, kerosene, etc., isn't any more radioactive than rocks and other things around us in nature and is not a concern.

  • @aluminiumstudios. another briiliant video - thanks. I can't wait for the next one; it should be hugely interesting, i think.

  • Interesting. What about taking your geiger counters to food stores and see if you can find any radioactive contaminated food...? And may be buy a detector that also can detect alpha particles...I heard about cliams of car filters with hot particles in Tokyo.May be you could try your counters also on some car filters? If so, I suggest you use som protective gear in case they contain alpha emitters...

  • Thank you for this video and the information you provide us.

  • And what are parents suppose to do about it? You got the answer to that?

  • @Fox250R Parents should avoid it, buy the non-radioactive ones, and tell their children not to handle them. You seem to be arguing that people should stay uninformed. Do you prefer to not know anything? Your arguments support a position that people should be/remain ignorant. Knowing more is always better. If that doesn't make sense to you, then this conversation is pointless and there is no purpose for you to watch my videos..

  • @AluminumStudios Ya i understand, but i think all the people living in japan already know whats going on...Reminding them day after day doesn't help...And people who live in USA cant do much about it either..Sure, move to the south or east coast! It will get you eventually right?

    Good day....

  • @Fox250R I think you misunderstand what this video is about. This product is not radioactive because of Fukushima, it is intentionally made with radioactive materials and this is wrong. In educational material about radiation which has been produced in response to Fukushima they handle these recklessly and without warnings about potential dangers. I find this unacceptable and will be covering it in my next video.

  • @Fox250R Also,I live in Japan and I can tell you that vast swaths of the public does NOT know what is going on and has been kept extremely ignorant by a media blackout. For example, mainstream media barely goes to or shows protests, I know because I've been to some and unlike America where the news crews would have documented it,the Japanese are trying to pretend that this situation doesn't exist. I'm done address your comments since you obviously are not familiar with realities of the situation.

  • @AluminumStudios I understand

  • If you were doing this in my store id kick you the fuck out!

  • @Fox250R Why? Do you have something to hide? Does it hurt the store? Can you offer a reason for this feeling?

  • @AluminumStudios Just dont understand what this proves...We know levels are high and getting worse but what how does this vid help anyone? Thank u

  • @Fox250R First of all it alerts people to the fact that a common item that they might use is potentially unhealthy. Second of all, the Japanese government lessons on radiation that will be taught to junior high students uses these things without any warnings or handling instructions given to the children or teachers. This will be explained in my upcoming video. After seeing the reaction of the Geiger counter, would you like your child handing these?

  • I've seen that product used in youtube videos as a sample to confirm that a Geiger works! I didn't know what it was, but now I do.

Check out an old thoriated camera lens, it's 30,000 CPM : watch?v=xyFr6vi_wsA#t=1m21s

  • @iamgoddard The lens is sick! God, I wouldn't want to hold that thing to my face!

  • thank you so much for your input. I am really torn and keep flip-flopping. They will be going to an onsen so I should find out if it is indoor or outdoor. There will be a meeting next week and I am sure I will be the only one to bring up this concern. I want to present the maps, talk about the firstsuccess vids and ask if they have checked the spot they'll stay. I really want to let her go,she is so excited and is talking about it every day. I wonder why they don't change the trip location.

  • oops! forgot to paste

    save child.net/archives/8180.html

  • here is a link to the map and links to other maps

  • brilliant!! I can't wait for your next video. Your videos are really a blessing and a help to me, struggling to keep my family together here in Japan. I am in Yokosuka and am finding it is livable if I make lifestyle adjustments and keep myself aware of possible dangers in order to keep my family safe. Question, my 6th grade daughter's school trip is 1night in Nikko. I don't want her to go because maps of cesium fallout in that area say it could be up to 600kbq/m2. Does k mean 1000 here?

  • @sakuramane2004 Thank you for your comment. I can't say for certain because I don't know which map you are looking at, but kbq is usually kilo-becquerel. There are areas in Fukushima that are in the millions of bq/m^2 so 600,000 bq/m^2 is not a surprising number. Youtube user "firstsuccess" has several videos with a geiger counter in Nikko watch?v=m-nLwso5hTo (fast-forward to about 2:11).

  • @AluminumStudios I just saw your subsequent comment and link. Yeah, that is kilo (x1,000). It must be a difficult decision, I know that class trip is incredibly important to kids. Unless she is going to be playing in the dirt or swimming outside, one night probably doesn't pose any health risk since exposure is cumulative and that one night will just disappear into the average radiation received over the months and years. I'm not a parent, but it might be reasonable to let her go for 1 night.

  • This is an EXTREMELY high quality of video. Every bit of detail was included. You mentioned the decay chain, the issues with uSv using energy units, and more! This is the top notch sort of thing we need more of on YouTube! Also, I might check my local stores for one of those mantles too. I doubt I will find any. Bravo!

  • Hi William. Very good investigation as usual and I enjoyed the Japanese shopping experience! - I embedded your video on my site and wrote up a short analysis. I was hoping you would drop in and add a comment. I will than move your comment into the blog post and adjust my comment if necessary. I really just want to double check my analysis is consistent with what you are saying. Thanks mate.

  • Thank You for your work and dedication...stay safe.

  • Thorium has a 22 year half life in the human body. Considering you are supposed to sit close to these things, burn them, and then of course breath I always wondered what the real harm is. The alpha counts are scary aren't they?
