Yup!...Me too!...I was only 10yrs old when my parents divorced. At the time I was the only kid on my block who LOVED Cher/Sonny & Cher & I owned all of their records..I would sit in my room and play this song and sing along to it while my parents would argue and carry on...I would just turn up the music to drown out the horror and violent abuse! Music really helped me through alot...especially Cher's since alot of it was drawn from her own personal experiences! I love U Cher and always will!
This song is very similar to "I've Lost You" by Elvis. The songs were released less than 2 years apart, and both were Top 40 hits that describe the struggles of the two supercouples just before they split up. Both couples were together about 10 years, and Sonny & Elvis were each 10 years older than their wives.
I heard this great song for the first time on one of the recent re-airings of "American Top 40 - The '70s," with Casey Kasem. It is very soulful and moving.
Actually this song went to Number 2 on the AC charts, and had considerable airplay. While Foxy Lady didn't go Gold, it charted pretty well and had a shelf life.
It didn't reach mega-hit status of the CHER/GYPSIES, TRAMPS & THIEVES album that preceded it, or the HALF-BREED album that came immediately after but, IMO, FOXY LADY was superior to either of those albums. I loved the orchestration and the choice of songs, and Cher sang the hell out of every song on the album. I first had this album on 8-track! (I'm old!).
8-Track...those were fun...hearing your favorite songs and right in the middle "click" - The Foxy Lady album made it to number 42-and was on the Billboard 200 for 22 Weeks. "Half Breed" went to number 28 and lasted 25 weeks. Often times Cher (and Sonny & Cher) were competing with themselves. in a four year period (between 1971 and 1974) they had 14 albums that charted on the Billboard 200. Now we have to wait 4 or 5 years for a new one!
i read that somewhere, that the CHER album was still on the charts when FOXY LADY came out, and then a Sonny & Cher album out around the same time = possibly a case simply too much Cher product at one time. it's funny, looking back, they use to release one, or maybe at the most two singles from an album, and then release another album that same year, while the prior one still had a lot of chart live to it, as opposed to now, where most artists put out one album every two or three years, and...
This song was great. It makes me think of Sonny and Cher's divorce. It made me cry when Sonny died. I still have not lived a day when I hear Sonny sing with Cher without crying.
I was going thru the same thing at that time as my parents divorces about the same time sonny & CHER split up. So this song marks a certain point in my life
Before Cher the only big star that I knew was Madonna and I like her but just like. With Believe I Knew CHER singer , actrees , everything and I said She is the one and became a big fan of Her .
I was going through some boxes in storage and found this 45 RPM with a couple hundred other 45 RPM records from the 60's 70's and 80's. I was in about the 5th grade when this song came out. Thats when I started wondering why Cher was married to Sonny. I know Sonny was the one that made Sonny and Cher but they didn't match. I hundred years later there is still no guy that can stand up to Cher. I guess thats why she is just "CHER"
The flip side is "One Honest Man" both are good songs.
No way, Sonny and Cher had chemistry up the WAZU. Why do you think their show was so popular and they kept making comeback after comeback? They were a big deal in the sixties and seventies and most people were very upset when they split up. Cher is just hard to be around, that's why she doesn't have any permanent men she isn't like god or something. I just don't get the big Cher attraction at all. To me, she's no big deal, but I did like Sonny and Cher when I was a young 'un.
I too was going through a very rocky time in my marriage when this was on the radio (heard all the time) like I had to be reminded constantly. Well the union lasted five more years but that was a waste of time. She left
with both children. Nice! I was devastated and the siblings turned out perfectly. Lucky me!
I loved Sonny and Cher so much and when I learned that they were splitting up (way back then) it really hurt me. This song so describes their breakup. Thanks so much for sharing.
It makes me sad because S & C were the ideal couple to me and my parents divorced 3 yrs before. This song reminds me of S & C divorcing and when they were married, they inspired hope across America.
This song came out in the early 70's when my parents were divorcing....then a few years later...guess who else got a divorce. So it is special to me also
thanks for posting! youtube gold!!! i got this album for 50 pence here in england and loved so many of the songs on it.. dont ever try to close a rose!!! this brings back memories!!! thanks again!!!
You've no idea how long I've searched for this song, one of Cher's most underrated performances. She knocks it out of the park with this one! Thank you so much for sharing your love of Cher;s music with the rest of us.
Thomas Bähler is a master composer. Thanks to him, this song exists. He also wrote the song Michael Jackson did, "She's out of my life". Great stuff.

Anyone who likes this song should also hear "Don't Hide Your Love." These are two lesser-known Cher gems that should not be overlooked!
