Actually Moore was only able to get to the ball because of Kneel went 'down' faster than a two bit whore and chopped Grosso's knee, then held his foot. Otherwise, Grosso was one-on-one with the keeper and/or had another player in a wide open position to dish the ball off to. That is why the penalty was given also. You cannot make contact with a player before ball in the penalty area, and thus remove a bonafide scoring chance. Kneel did this. Kneel got punished.
For Grosso to be one on one with goalkeeper he needed to step around Neill. He uses time and in this time Moore is able to get to ball and kick it way.
He already had stepped around Kneel, but Kneel threw himself to ground in a way so as to obstruct Grosso. Kneel was continuing to slide into Grosso as Grosso sidestepped with his right leg. It is purely Kneel's fault for making contact with Grosso's left knee and hyperextending it, then obstructing Grosso's foot with his hand, making it impossible to step over him. Remy I think you are a bit harsh on the Italian team. There were 4 chances but these weren't exact gimmes. Toni probably should've score early on. Gilardino's shot wasn't easy as ball was bouncing high and to keep it down is difficult. Toni did well to turn with Grella tightly marking him. Toni header over the bar in which was in position to easily palm it over bar.
I suppose the mentioning of those chances was to illustrate that Australia never came as close as to scoring as those ones. I go for Australia and always thought the it was a dive but now i can see there was contact i still think australia played well but in the end its not the team that plays the best its the team that scores. I think that the 2 best teams got in to the finals. But i half french and was a bit disipointed.
Italy played much better football than Australia did in the game. Running at 100mph, as Australia did, with the plethora of Rugby tackles (as evidenced in the video's) does not = better football. In addition, Italy needed to give up possession because of the Materazzi red card error.
All in all, the best chances of the game were generated by Italy, and the most technical plays were generated by Italy. Shots on net were 8-3, evidence that Italy generated more. Italy didn't finish 3 golden opportunities in the first half, and that was their fault, whereas Australia only could make ONE goal scoring opportunity with a man advantage. THAT shows the class difference.
How hard is it, for the plethora of bogans who try to deny contact, to understand that you simply cannot lay down in front of an advancing opponent, make contact (deliberately or not) and remove a bonafide goal scoring opportunity? Kneel did all of this when he shamefully when down faster than a .50c whore and blocked the path of Grosso to net.
Clearly Grosso tried to round him, but there simply was not enough time. When Kneel's elbow makes contact with Grosso's knee, and the ball is lost, Grosso made no further effort to go for it. If you think that's a dive, you are clueless. Go watch the final where Malouda clearly dove on no contact. Or the semi-final when Henry did the same.

I saw the SBS commentary, and I agree...they were completely racist and this is why I produced this video. This is a great video, the defender was lucky, he sould have been red carded because if you look carefully he throws his elbow directly towards Grosso's knee. I'm not taking anything away from the skill of the Italians. They have some of the best players in the world. They have both the technical and tactical ability to do what I just said. But the fact is Italy were reduced to 10 so Australia had a VERY good chance of getting through to the QF (you have to concede that surely).
I already did conceed it. Because of the gift to Materazzi, Australia managed to stay in the game. Up till that point, Italy only failed to convert 3 golden opportunities. The video shows them all. If Italy convert even just one, the game is over because Australia has to take chances and come forward with their backend, which would leave them open for the picking. Instead, they get a one man advantage which takes away Italy's advantage.
However, the Aussies haven't considered that withou that Red Card, they wouldn't have such a huge possession stat and it was literally a matter of time before Italy scored. There is no doubt. You can't keep missing golden opportunities time after time, just ask Germany. Gillardino off the post, Zambro off the cross-bar, but Grosso and Del Piero eventually find the net. Also, Italy had 4 attackers in that game, when the conditions were suitable.
So much for the critics proclaiming that Italy is only defensive. Sure, defensive when NEEDED, and OFFENSIVE when necessary. That's technical football at it's best, not just running around at 100mph the whole game.
If Materazzi wasn't sent off we in all likelihood would have lost to a 2 or 3 goal margin. But he was sent off. Australia did have a good chance. The Australians were fitter and would have fared better in extra time (Viduka stated this. It is also a major part of Hiddink's strategy with lesser-capable teams. Both with Korea and Australia he put the team through intense fitness regimes research for yourself if you like).
I know Hiddink had them running very well, but who cares? Italy wasn't about to give an advantage to Australia right after the ref gave them a gift with Materazzi's red card. Actually Moore was only able to get to the ball because of Kneel went 'down' faster than a two bit whore and chopped Grosso's knee, then held his foot. Otherwise, Grosso was one-on-one with the keeper and/or had another player in a wide open position to dish the ball off to. That is why the penalty was given also. You cannot make contact with a player before ball in the penalty area, and thus remove a bonafide scoring chance. Kneel did this. Kneel got punished.

He already had stepped around Kneel, but Kneel threw himself to ground in a way so as to obstruct Grosso. Kneel was continuing to slide into Grosso as Grosso sidestepped with his right leg. It is purely Kneel's fault for making contact with Grosso's left knee and hyperextending it, then obstructing Grosso's foot with his hand, making it impossible to step over him. As Grossi was forced to balance on the one leg...

And the game wasn't even. For starters, you had an unfair man advantage for the whole of the second. Secondly, Italy generated triple the chances that Australia did. Australia had one bonafide goal scoring opportunity with the man advantage, and Italy had three.
Lastly, the amount of hip checks, studs up challenges, and stump cutting that Australia did was also disproportionate to Italy. You won that battle.

I personally think it was a 50/50 call and Australia was just unlucky. Back home it hurt so bad because we never expected to get so far through the tournament. Remy I think you are a bit harsh on the Italian team. There were 4 chances but these weren't exact gimmes. Toni probably should've score early on. Gilardino's shot wasn't easy as ball was bouncing high and to keep it down is difficult. Toni did well to turn with Grella tightly marking him. Toni header over the bar in which was in position to easily palm it over bar.

Your comment implies that having a man advantage continues to empower the team the longer the match goes, and the evidence suggests otherwise. Early in the 2nd half it certainly seemed to be the case that the extra man and fitness were working in your favor, but you could do nothing with it. However, at the end of the match for the last 10 minutes, Italy had Australia pinned in their own end. Rewatch the last 20 minutes if you don't believe me. Totti reversed the man advantage.

Yes it's easier to play and team down to 10 players but it's also easy to play a team weaken by injuries and suspension to key players.
Italy are class above Australia. Australia were relying on their stamina and fitness.
You can talk about chances, but if you going to win you need to take those chances on offer.
If Materazzi was still on the field then Italy probably more likely winners. However the longer it stay at 0-0 I feel Australia's fitness and stamina would come into play.

Here's the problem with your theory MR...it's a theory that is not backed by evidence. The evidence does not support that being a man down = losing. In fact, it happens to be the reverse. Look up the stats if you like.
Secondly, Australia had 45 minutes of 1 man advantage and could do nothing with it. When Totti was entered into the game, Italy turned the flow into the Australian end and created about 4 real strong goal scoring opportunities. With one man up, you were on your heels.

The fact is there wasn't any evidence that Australia had what it took to beat Italy. With 45+ minutes of added advantage, Australia generated 2 shots on net and only 1 was partially dangerous. Buffon made a routine save on that one.

At no stage did Italy look like they would get broken down, I actually think Hiddink let the team down a bit here, he didn't tactically try to change anything, made no aggressive substitutions or no attempt to shuffle the formation (Think Aussie missed Kewell and Emerton here, players who run at defenses and try and create things). Italy looked comfortable and soaked up Aussie attacks and played on the counter and could have had a couple. Anway, who better to lose to than the eventual winners?

Also must say that it is a generalisation that all Australians think it wasn't a penalty, even Harry Kewell after the game conceeded that it was a clear cut penalty. Maybe I could take this argument a little further to try and understand why Australia was robbed? Let's imagine for a minute that Totti missed the penalty. Even if it's obstruction Grosso is running toward goal, so Neill can only make CLEAN contact with the ball, or it's a penalty. Obviously he is far from the ball, so all he achieves is to impede Grosso's progress to goal, not playing the ball but removing Grosso's chance to score or provide an assist. So the referee has only one option. It was a desperate and reckless tackle. The referee got this decision 100% correct and FIFA acknowledged this by placing him as the 4th official in the Final.

As for the penalty. Firstly Totti switches play with his LEFT foot (he's right-footed) to Grosso. Technically brilliant, and hits him on the chest with the pass. A defender can't throw themselves down sliding in front of a player running in on goal in the penalty area. The only option is a penalty. If this had occurred on the halfway line it would have been a free kick with no complaints from anyone. It can't be different just because it was the final seconds of the match in an attacking zone.

Materazzi should have had a yellow card for the foul, because he was just late. It was from the front, not behind, and his studs were down. Zambrotta is too close to Bresciano, and more goal-side than Bresciano, so it can't be considered a foul by the last defender. Yellow would suffice.

The Fifa rules state that a player is RESPONSIBLE for his limbs at all times and CANNOT make contact with an opposing player, before the ball, in the penalty area. Clearly Grosso tried to round him, but there simply was not enough time. When Kneel's elbow makes contact with Grosso's knee, and the ball is lost, Grosso made no further effort to go for it. I saw the SBS commentary, and I agree...they were completely racist and this is why I produced this video. The Aussie cry that it is biased but I put EACH and EVERY SINGLE chance that both teams created in it, as well as ALL the fouls. I already did conceed it. Because of the gift to Materazzi, Australia managed to stay in the game. Up till that point, Italy only failed to convert 3 golden opportunities. The video shows them all. If Italy convert even just one, the game is over because Australia has to take chances and come forward with their backend, which would leave them open for the picking. Even with seconds remaining Grosso still had the energy to drive toward the net ,never giving up . Bresciano got clearly beaten. Then Neil decides to slide in the penalty area?? Whether it was a penalty or not if Neil never dove the penalty would not have occurred. How many times did Cannavaro get beaten like Bresciano did during the world cup ??ZERO

I do believe that the australian media did fuk up on this one. We were not robbed, either way its just the game of football. it was simply a ploy to provoke racial tension.(i felt this in my town as the majority are of italian heritage).

Aussies still pretend as if their team is Mr. Clean. Of course these are only the plastic World Cup fans that don't watch soccer on a regular basis, else they could hardly miss that their very own Aloisi and Harry "boy" Kewell are CHRONIC DIVERS in the league and even on their own NT. Aloisi vs Ghana in Nov 06 made a dive worse than anything you could imagine that Grosso made. He wasn't even contacted and his dive won the game for Australia.

I watched that match and I have always said that the decision made by the Ref was a fair one.
It was a well played match by both teams but in the end the better team won.
If it did manage to go to a penalty shoot out Italy still would have won.
