He ripped his shirt open in the street then changed in the doorway in front that man and girls, he dosen't want to blow his cover on his first rescue!
Perfection. They couldn't have done the first Clark/Superman change any better. Everything about the first change is amazing. The music, the direction, the editing.
I love how he politely says "Excuse me" to the pimp instead of just brushing him off. It's such a small thing but really defines the character of Superman as a true man of the people.
@FireStormBaller Some younger people might not see that subtle reference. The fact that he changed in an actual phone BOOTH. Now most younger people hardly notice there are pay phones out there.
I was a theatre manager at the time this was released. At the SOR invite-only screening (It wasn't common back then to have those) the entire audience broke into applause when he opened his shirt and revealed the big S.
0:34 the money shot. Tell me that doesn't put a lump in your throat when you see that. That, and the double-take he does when looking over the phone booth is classic.
Do you think it was racist? Seriously? I'm far from politically correct but I do have a firm grasp on evoking and appealing to frames. Yeah, it was hilarious, but surprising as well.

in 1978 me and my eleven year old friend sat through the whole movie with our
mouths wide open with shock that a man could fly and talked about this for weeks after. R.I.P christopher reeve

Such a shame that the first people to lay eyes on Superman were a pimp and 2 prostitutes.

How suspenseful is this scene? Donner really milked every last bit of it, too. Damn, what a great moment.
