Only few brilliant violin-players go easily from Classical Music to Jazz. Stéphane Grappelli is one of the best examples together with Yehudi Menuhin. The violins of both gentlemen tell their story about the beauty of whatever type of Jazz.
Stéphane Grappelli is a genius when he plays with Django Reinhardt, especially when the music is written by the genial guitar-player whose compositions and music itself seem to be like Pearls. I love the work of Django & Stéphane together as very fine.
Hate me all you want but I wouldn't listen to this violin for more than five minutes. To me it seems there is no breathing space, it's only technical prowess. No emotion, the melody is played like a metronome, there is no accentuation, no dynamics. There is no more emotion than in ta passing subway train.
@firestartertwistedfi Oh yes I know very well, he's my country man too, but I don't care what other people think,. Perhaps it's because he's too old and he lost the interest, this can happen when one plays the same numbers too many times. Fame has nothing to do with talent even in jazz
Stephane Grappelli's playing is unreal, almost mythical even. The other two musicians in this clip don't let him down either. Why can no other violin player sound like this? His sound was unique.
Excellent trio... yet can't leave it without saying what I see... I almost died from laughing and going into caughing as I saw l.58- and especially at 2.08! Gosh now ... my tummy is up-side-down... pls. pardon me...I may have been here naughty... didn't mean to hurt anyones feelings... just this came down pretty tough on me.
Saw Stephane around this time and Howlin' Wolf, years before, near his end. Both with young(er) guys as support. Hopefully the music lives on. Thanks.
Grappelli's work with Django Reinhardt stands among the best music ever produced. He is a true artist who deserves much more recognition than he gets.
This man is amazing. I've only just discovered Django, which of course led me here. Daphne and Charleston are my favourites. The skill displayed by everyone is outstanding.
I just love the way they enjoy playing. Much better than loads of other musicians that look way too serious while playing (I'm violinist and don't want to look too serious xD) what gives me the impression that they aren't playing because they like it.
As you are only 25 and live in the USA I am going to cut you some slack.
Stéphane Grappelli (26 January 1908 1 December 1997) was a French jazz violinist who founded the Quintette du Hot Club de France with guitarist Django Reinhardt in 1934. It was one of the first (and arguably the most famous) of all-string jazz bands.
Zillions of stars, are not enough to rate this priceless vid. Thanks for postin'. Is to the newer generations a landmark to begin to understand what Jazz is all about on this planet! Awesome!!!!!!!!!
Stephane Grapelli said that he learned his style of violin from listening to Django play! The amazing Stephane played with as much ease and consistency on the hard parts ad he did on the easy parts!
Sad that a haircut comment ignores the talent evident on the screen . Get over the fascination with how people look and concentrate on their talents instead .. GAWWD ..
