you dont have to do sunah. But I remember theres a story that goes something like this: There was a man who told the prophet that he will only do the fard and not the sunnah. The prphet peace be upon him said that this guy will be a winner if he satays on the fard. But sometimes we do sunnah when we don't realize it. And the fard includes refraining from sins.

yes i think the sunnah/ our beloved prophets ways are as the brother said bonus points. because the times have changed and we cannot do everything the prophet used to do. ie, we can't go to work in a jubbah, or travel on camels/donkeys etc. so yes within reason you should follow the sunnah.
