After all that is why they have commercials to pay for the service... What if there was an emergency broadcast, as a citizen it's your right to access that.

Nowdays if you don't have a licence so long as you tell them you don't need one as you only ever use it as a computer monitor or watching DVDs you've purchased they don't bother you, until you buy another telly and you have to tell them again.

They tried to take me to court - they simply couldn't understand that I owned a telly but didn't watch TV! I said I used it for watching DVD's, the PC, video games but of course those aren't good enough reasons to have a TV - you MUST be on the fiddle. I went to court suited & booted only for them to phone me up to pull out 5 mins before the hearing, the bastards.. Oh, AND they harrassed my old dear about it, threatening with police so she paid it for me - I got the money back for her of course!

@videogangstar Over here regional broadcasters MUST be part of the free stations you get. and they must be on the default channels you get for cable in the area. After all that is why they have commercials to pay for the service... What if there was an emergency broadcast, as a citizen it's your right to access that.
We had similar problems here when pay per view came about. Stories of a van listening in to see if you use a hacked decoder.

I dont have a TV license, I only ever listen to Radio 4. I've had the TV licensing bloke at my door often, I've wrote to them and they don't take any notice they still keep coming!

I had a TV licence man ask to check my house for a TV as I didn't have a licence. I asked him if he had a legal right to enter to check and he said he didn't. Since he'd been honest I let him in anyway.
Nowdays if you don't have a licence so long as you tell them you don't need one as you only ever use it as a computer monitor or watching DVDs you've purchased they don't bother you, until you buy another telly and you have to tell them again.

The BBC, i think it is, enforce that people need a TV license to watch their channels and you don't really have a say, the only alternative is to not own a TV, you can say that you don't own a TV but then they come to your house to check, like this guy did. TV Licensing could very easily have made it impossible for the new digital telly to be watched without a subscription card, pin number, or summit else. That way they could've left alone folks who are not at all interested in watching:
Moanin'; buying junk; selling junk; buying houses; decorating houses; cooking in houses; more moaning (in houses); a documentary about WW2 (and the effect it had on houses); cartoons; repeats of The Simpsons and FRIENDS and the "news".

Ladies and gentlemen, you are not obliged to obtain a TV licence. If you do not record 'live' TV as it is transmitted then you do not need one. Ignore their intimidating letters and do not fall foul to their wishy-washy terminology. Simply toss them into the bin. If you are confronted by a TV licence agent on your doorstep (you don't always open the door to the correct people!) then never sign any forms; let the licence agents into your property; or admit to anything. 3 years non-payment here!

@motherflange 1st year of non payment at this house, and have just got throught the threatening letters stage, to which I retorted that as we do not watch live tv (truthfully too) we dont need a license and got the the usual "we may need to confirm this with a visit" to which I withdrew their implied rights of access..
I asked to see the law that they quoted me about having to have a TV license and to date they still havent. It seems it is indeed just a CORPORATE TAX that we dont have to pay.

@945djmc Capita are hardly reasonable. They lie, they forge evidence and try to gain access by deception. The TV license is not a "public service" it's a tax, and a very unfair one at that. I had a brief glimpse of how the BBC wastes this tax last year, and quite frankly it's disgusting. More and more people are refusing to pay the license fee and I for one hope this trend continues.
