  • Wow...what kind of engineering class is this? I mean, some of your tests were pushing 5-ft of head, others were pulling 1-ft and pushing 5-ft...geesh, not 'fair-and-balanced' in any way. I started out wondering what amount of head your tests had to push...but then, you had some trying to pull 5-ft of head without prime...not even some commercial pumps can do that. Doesn't really make sense, at all. BTW, I did my Graduate engineering studies at OU...

  • (continued) Someone mentioned we should take this outside and use nature's wind, rather than use an electric fan. We live in a flat state, and our campus is not on the coast. Our grades are earned based on our machines' relative performances, and the only way to compare fairly is to use a reliable, constant wind source, such as a fan.

  • (continued) This semester's schedule gives us 51 days from the day it was assigned to the day we compete. During this time, this project is not a top priority for the students, as most of us are more concerned with our Capstone design course project, which is a more serious, and larger-scale project that is funded by NSF.

  • I'm in this class now, and I'd like to address a few concerns raised in the previous comments. First of all, this is an elective course, undergraduate-level mechanical engineers. The class does not receive any funding from the school; as such, all materials and labor are at the expense of the 4-5 students in each group. Group members are randomly matched by the instructor, and we have no input on who we work with. As such, the collective skill set in each group varies greatly. (continued)

  • i'm from Romania, i'm also student of Engineering University, but when I watch this video... i can't believe those guys are students. Really! This is child play what they are doing in the clip. But those guys are the future NASA engineers ;) life is a bitch!

  • This is a really low budget university.

But what is worst is that this is an university and the way they are conducting experiments and how much students "contribute" to this class is "amazing".

I wonder if they learned anything.

I'm glad I did my studies in east Europe.

Then again maybe this is not a technical university but an art school in that case is probably fine.

  • with schools teaching are young men and woman how to change the world no wounder china is going to pass the usa. this is a joke. go to china's schools and learn somthing

  • OR, they could have just created a siphon effect at the top of the tube, instead of trying to "push" from the bottom.

  • Didn't mean to post twice.

  • Wind power water pumps have existed for over 150 years and work much better than this, i.e. at least three gallons a minute. Large Dutch "scoop" style windmills could move 16000 gallons an hour to a height of 16 feet. Step one for any such project: take it outside and remove electricity from the mix altogether. This could have been a useful experiment.

  • The stupidity in this room is amazing. Most of all the authority figure/professor guy doesn't seem to have a clue.

  • What a same, your parents payed 20K plus, give me tha 20k and I will show you renewable energy. This is lame and sad.

  • It's a pity.

  • Ditch the friggin music and explain what you are trying to do!!!

  • Please don't tell me these are future hydraulic engineers!!!

  • hahahahahahahahhahah!!

  • a week or maybe a month!

  • How much time was allotted to achieve the goal?

  • Great music if you had that much man power standing all the time hook up people taking turn hand pumping all the water need ha ha

  • interesting. would a venturi have worked?

  • Use gravity? Better than electricity. Nice tho!

  • The contest was to pump 5 gallons of water up four feet into another bucket.
