  • The invention of the tabla is traditionally attributed to Amīr Khusrow. He is also regarded as the "father of qawwali" (the devotional music of the Sufis in the Indian subcontinent). Amīr Khusrow Dehlavī (امیر خسرو دہلوی;) was not only a notable poet but also a prolific and seminal musician. He wrote poetry primarily in Persian, but also in Hindavi. Khusrow was born in Badaun near Etah in northern India. His father Amir Saifuddin came from Balkh in modern day Afghanistan.

  • Awesome!! Learning to play Tabla was always been my dream but never had the chance to do it. Got a pair of Tablas on EBay few years ago and they were not the best quality of course and found myself a teacher who was even lesser quality who wanted to charge $50 for half hour lesson and wanted to sell me his "superior" tabla for $500. So had to quit after four lessons. This video makes me so want to learn to play again. Wish you were my teacher! You rock!! Great instructional style. Thank you!

  • @swiv2d

Troll much? Also why such the racist? Every one of your videos is about Hitler.

  • How do you know you are buying a nice pair of tabla?

  • ur shit "parallel to my ass"

  • @lordaboveall Suck it faggot.

  • @MassacreTheGods I mastered the tabla i think i know what im talkin bout

  • @lordaboveall "Mastery" doesn't give you the right to be a little bitch.

  • @MassacreTheGods the problem is that he is teaching some people and he is not teaching properly and he cant bloody play

  • @lordaboveall Then post a better video you stupid piece of fucking shit.

  • @MassacreTheGods On you tube you cant teach things only show. Thats why my teacher for tabla doesnt teach me the same as everyone else because he has to find my difficulties and strengths so this person would have to post a vid for each individual person otherwise he wont be able to teach.

  • @lordaboveall So that's your excuse for being a little bitch?

  • Please search TABLA 2010 on youtube and watch my tabla solo (should be the 1st one) -Feedback is really appreciated. Thanks :)

  • Very good lesson.!!

  • Hey !

I´d really like to thank you a lot Venkat !!!

Thank you so very much for your tabla lesson, they really help me, cus I just started playing a couple of months ago.

    Your fan

  • got a nagori drum from trade aid.. anyones knows how to play it?

  • Hey all, I am wondering, I want to compliment my friend on Tabla. I usually play bass, and he drums. But he is getting into Tabla and I want to play an instrument of the same style and origin so I can compliment it well, without an amp. Any suggestions?

  • @Hiarch123 there is no indian classical instrument which has a bass tone, since u r a bassist.. but there r many other stringed instruments resembling the guitar.. u can try the sitar or the sarod.. if u r used to strumming with a pick u should go for the sarod which is quite similar.. also its much louder than a sitar

  • I was actually thinking a woodwind with a low pitch...like a Duduk. Or maybe an Orcarina (I know they don't have a low pitch)

  • @Hiarch123 Well, there is the Shehnai (a beautiful Indian classical woodwind instrument known for weddings; very similar to the Oboe), but it is somewhat difficult if you have not been introduced to woodwind instruments before. There is also the Bansuri which is the Indian flute and they are very inexpensive. They both go really well with Tabla.

  • Thank you very much! I will check each of them out! Thanks again!

  • @Hiarch123 No problem. Any time :)

  • Isn't the sarod hard to learn to fret? As I believe it's fretless, and you have to fret with your fingernails.

  • Harmonium?

  • A dholak goes really well with tabla.

  • hey guys my tablas seem to prolong the sound; it doesn't really sound like the tutorial because the sound goes longer. Is there a way to fix it?

  • Wow, great that someone is providing this information for everyone, good luck to all of you and may we all improve our Tabla abilities. Keep up the great work! TABLA!

  • this is great i just started tabla yesterday and its great. thank you soo much

  • Hi! That´s a waltz, isn´t t?

  • waltz is six beats in tabla terms it is know as dadra

the tekha is played as dha dhin na dha tin na... however; this varies with different gharana's.... it can also be played as dha dhin na na tin na as tekha which is from another gharana

  • thanks a lot for your amazing and generous lesson, greetings, haim.

  • Really, thanks so much!

  • wow this really helped me with my report in music class thx for the lesson!

  • Where is the best place to buy tabla?

  • @Chutney111 ,....from india land .... or from southall

  • afghanistan and indian

is very good and cheap ;)

  • where u live??? if u live delhi then das musical

  • amaaaaaziiiing

  • that was a good one man i wish that you were some where in brampton ontario so that i should have taken lessons from you

  • where do u live bro??????????????

  • :-)

  • awesome!!

  • Thanks Thelaofkazi and jayantdrummer for your feedback. My son has the need to hit something and likes to break something up by banging them together. He is a very sensory person. I have noticed him showing interest in drums/tabla instruments when we visit temples and cultural shows.. One of my cousin who plays tabla in Vancouver advised that the fingers may not be ready ie firm to hit the tabla.

  • I started playing at 7, and taking lessons, when my family was living in Delhi during the late '70's... no permanent scars!

Seriously, though I eventually moved to piano and guitar, I highly enjoyed those years and am still a great fan of classical Indian music in general.

Regarding "fingers" - I would say tablas are a good solution; many tones are sub-velocity and don't require much force to generate.

And I still have/play my original tablas: Ta TeRe KeTe, Ta, Ta, Ta, Ta TeRe KeTe, Ta!

  • I am 17 yrs old and i am interested in learning tabla..I just want to know if it is okay to start learning tabla at 17/18

  • I don't play tabla, but let me tell you this: if you really are interested in playing an instrument, it doesn't matter at what age you start. Although you mite never catch up with the people who started early, just plaing the instrument should be enough satisfation.

So don't care about what others say; just do, what you want to do, if it makes you happy.

  • @Mazinager Your comment really motivates me!! Thanks for it!! :) Though I'm not old. :P But I really wanna learn a lot of music instruments! Some people would say that's unrealistic tho. But I just wanna have fun with them, those musical instruments. Like I wanna dance and sing with the notes! =D

  • @Mazinager tar ki bat hai

  • @Mazinager

The tabla has a very intresting sound. I love to hear it being played by Zakir. I like how they just GO and keep playing, it just rolls and rolls. I wish I had a few tabla drums to just sit back and zone out and play! Hahaha!

  • its best to start as early as you can. so yeah.

  • Hi. At what age can you start learning tabla. My son is 7 years old and he is interested in drums and tabla. Not sure whether is it too early to enrol him into tabla classes.

  • 7 is good enough age to learning any instrument. Make sure his interest doesnt wane away!

  • Maybe too early to enroll him in classes. I suggest giving him some sort of drum, something cheap to mess around with and to see if likes it, if it clicks with him. I've been playing percussion for about 4 years now and although I don't play the tabla, I didn't start out really with lessons. The reason I started lessons was because my endless need to hit things rhythmically with my hands, or sticks was getting annoying, so they decided that some lessons might be able to turn it into something.

  • Very Nice lessons on Tabla. Keep posting some advanced lessons. Wish you All the Best

  • Hi Rainman,

I learn tabla. The more you play tabla the more free your hands become. Infact few people attach little weights around their wrist. ( for example "Kada") when you play tabla

Avoid lifting weights if you go to gym.

  • My mums uncle is Mannargudi easwaran, iam going to get personal mridangam lessons from him!

  • youre also learning. brilliant right? your video is very good, do you do stretching exercises for your hands when they swell up after too much practice? what do you do to avoid stiffness

  • thx a lot...keep it u
