  • i agree with crissxxx martial arts is for peace and health benefits and its surprising how with all three related modern arnis, taekwondo, and tai chi chuan can take make just 1 average joe take a guy 289 pounds and flip them throw them and submission them so easily

  • I love this video, it is timeless. Music is good, it is the juice like we say in France.

  • he's water bending!!

  • Robert Smith said of all the Chinese masters he met, none stood before Cheng (of course, take Robert Smith's word as you like). My Yin style BaGuaZhang teacher (Richard Wu) told me he knows a gentleman (whom he simply refers to as "old Mr. Chen") who studied with Cheng and whose skills are supposedly equally as impressive. From what I understand, when Cheng was younger, he was quite the fighter...often challenging anyone whom he heard had a level of skill worth testing. Interesting:)

  • Grandmaster Cheng Man Ching was one of the great exponents of Tai Chi, Master Huang Shin Shyan was one of his top students.

  • I hear this guy was a dick

  • I never met him to make any comment on that, but would have been good to have tried push-hands with him or sword.

  • i read his book, the thirteen treaties of tai chi quan and was a great book, this man is a master among masters...he redeveloped the yang form to a 24 form style and taught the chinese military for a time, truly a great master!!

  • Incredible. So smooth.

  • This guy is 20 years old with dyed hair and a fake beard!

  • Cheng man ching.A real master never satisfied by his practise after 50 years !

    Practised also 4 others arts.

  • ;-)

  • Why, I think the music is great.

  • I wanted to change the music on that clip , didn't like it much meself. Maybe get around to adding something kewl.

  • when do you get to use a sword?

  • Solo practice you can do anytime at home or outside in the park, but partner practice is when you go to your study group or club.

  • nice moves ... horrible music...

  • I dont look that graceful when I do it. of course, I have only been doing it for three weeks, and we are still on the first series.

  • I love TCC but there are no classes in my city. There are Tai chi classes but they focus on the healthy aspect of it, they don't teach it as a martial art. Some people just learn some moves and think they can give a class. To bad because i would love to learn it.

  • My friend, there is no separation between the healthy aspect of it and the martial art. if you want to learn, you must take what the universe is making available to you. it is there for a reason.

  • ;-)

  • I have studied TCC for almost forty years. Chen is one of the best , along with T.T. Liang. Studying TCC is not the worst thing in the world you could be doing with your life.

  • This martial art is one of the finest internal honing arts. Used for healing and balance over the mind, body and soul. Yet having a ferocity and precision from halting a person dead in their tracks, stopping their heart, and sometimes rendering their nervous system paralyzed. This martial art has a major history, this is truly a beautiful art.

  • I met a martial artist once from the big able who told me he studied with a Chen Man Ching. I wonder if this is the same dude?

  • Man Ching did teach there, most likely the same person.

  • apenas 3 segundos y me dormi

  • yes, watching the form is a bit boring and is best only for those who practice this. There is much more to TCC than solo forms.

  • actually when you speed it up... its an incredible form of self defence

  • Tai Chi Chuan is a martial art but alot of people just practice the solo forms for health, this video is such a form. TCC as a martial art has way different training. Don't think that TCC guys just do this and think they can fight, they do a lot more training stuff with much free style fighting.

  • And why do you think it is not ?

  • taichi isnt good? it's too slow? they practice that slow, but they fight fast. and martial arts is not practiced to make people the best fighters in the world, it's practiced for people to defend and strengthen their own bodies. if you understand chinese- 练武之人练武不是来比武的,是爱、来强身健体的强身的

  • To be honest most people today take martial arts class to be badasses (cocky) or to participate in MMA tournaments, I dont know how many people consider martial arts as an art of the mind and body for health benefits and ones peace.

  • i take wing chun and taichi and to understand the theory behind it, it is more interesting then just knowing how to fight ..

  • Well yes since it boost your health since you can controll your breath and maintain a natural course of the blood flow.

  • @crissxxx

i consider it an art of the mind and body for health benefits and ones peace, but haven't taken lessons for a while :( cost money i don't have, to be taught.

  • @HellHoundNP get Terry Dunne's DVD or VHS "Yang short form" to learn this style.

  • @crissxxx Honestly I think that people who are serious involved with mma training and tournaments , at least the people i know have lots of respect with wu shu and all martial arts. I practice boxing and self defense training today( i'm 30), but I was introduced to Tai chi yang since 10 years old. people that don't respect tai chi chuan don't understand martial arts. and i think this people have to exist for us to continue develop the essence of.

  • And just think, before I read this, I might have considered you versed on any subject you might have thought to speak on.

  • @phauna There's a lot more to tai chi chuan practice than doing a solo form, solo form is like basic movements of aikido but you don't just do basic movement in aikido you work with partners, same with tai chi chuan.

  • @hawkwindthinman kind of reminds me of cats actually. they're really slow in movements... and then all of a sudden POW!

  • this is cool

  • Prof. Cheng never taught this but my teacher had us learn Chengs form in mirror version as well as regular CMC form. I do standard Wu 108 everyday nowadays but no mirror, CMC now and then. still do both sides of Yang style weapons form and also Aikido/Kenjutsu weapons. I used to do Chen and old Wu style, two man form and fast form.

  • Tai Chi weapons is sword, saber, spear and staff. I do the CMC form with a mirror version also weapons done withe mirror, right hand the with left. I don't know any spear forms but have a book "The Wind Sweeps Away Plum Blossoms".

  • With all due respect, if you do a "mirror" form, it isn't CMC. Prof. Cheng specifically told his students they shouldn't do this, because it could produce adverse health effects. TC is designed to work with the organ systems of the body, which are not symmetrical, hence the bilateral asymmetry of his (and most) TC forms. Also, though it's not bad to be able to use weapons with both hands, Prof. Cheng likewise never taught this.

  • Wow, I just recently bought "Cheng Tzu's 13 Treatise on Tai Chi Chuan," and now I find this video on Youtube. What luck! From what I've seen in the video, there also happens to be a study of weapon forms in Tai Chi? I thought so. I've been trying to self-teach myself so this video is actually very helpful. Not to mention it shows a very influential individual.

  • Yes, there are weapons forms in t'ai chi. Prof. Cheng's book is wonderful, but you need to study with a competent, experienced teacher. Also, the only weapon Prof. Cheng taught formally was the jian, the sword seen in this video.

  • if you really want to learn it get classes other wise its pointless

  • Tai Chi Chaun was originally a martial art but over the years not many know or want to practice the fighting. Nowadays I do Wu style because it is still practiced as martial way, but still not many I know want to get into free styling.

  • true, and with the centering and strengthening of mind, body and spirit comes confidence and clarity that can be applied to all aspects of modern life. Confidence with a "can do attitude" that is hard to attain by other means.

  • learning taichichuan is to strengh your body, but not to fight with others. tai chi is the symbol of entire universe from chinese thoughts. actually, so-called tai chi is to balance your mind, body, spirit with the whole univese.

  • True but, it is also designed as a Martial Art. No Martial Art is pro on fighting others but, it is self defense. That's the Chuan (fist) of Tai Chi Chuan.

  • tai chi kung fu shaolin instruction

    truekungfu . net

  • I've done a lot of M arts in 24 years, This movie shows no actual fighting style. it is by far the best pressure control demonstration in the history of filmed M arts. respect for that.

Tai Chi Chuan is the next generation of urban Military Wfare, for it's pure-ground based practical adaption to changing close range environments., phew.. :)

    peace,

    esgo

    amsterdam

  • Watch this!!!

Is that sort of Thi Chi??

    They are doing pushing hands!!

    Amazing!!

    "TAONAMICS - Kampfsystem"

  • can anybody tell me where to find this type of music?

  • The opening sequence seems to be a much abbreviated version of the 37-posture short form or "solo exercise" which he demonstrates in his book. But most or all of the basic moves are here.

  • it's great to see cheng doing the form it's a whole lot different to the gov approved daning form this I believe is true Tai chi

  • wanna know if you are doing Tai Chi correctly? attach bells to your pants. If your form is gentle and smooth the way tai chi is supposed to be, the bells won't make any noise. If you are rough and unstable, they will cling and clang. It only works for Tai Chi though......

  • I use to practice with a book on my head.

  • Bullshit. There's forms of tai chi where you move fast. The pants move too. So the bell will make soem sound, if it's a good bell.

  • I just try to listen to my balls... same result.

  • and muay thai too

  • the bells will only measure very external velocity. meaning if you move fast or change velocity it will sound- irelevent to being soft and supple & even mor inacurate mean to judge internal strength

  • I love serious videos, none of that theatrical acrobatic crap the PRC promotes as "Kung Fu."

  • I had been doing Chengs form since Feb 1979, last year I dropped doing it to learn standard Wu style (Eddie Wu). A year later I tried doing Chengs form, at first I was a bit screwed till I realized that I had always done Chengs form (left and right) facing East and Eddie's form West, cont...

  • ...cont.

then I tried Chengs form facing East it all came back with no pauses, both sides. I did Eddies West because I used the help of DVD and my TV was that side of my room. I always did my weapon forms facing East because I needed a hallway to the bathroom for the finish of my sword set.

  • xie xie!

  • dont insult those whom you dont know, and besides,if you dont like it,dont go around searching for them, because you WILL get kicked off of YouTube. And so you know,I am one of those who DO complain about those whom go around and say things when they dont know anyting about it.

  • huh? What is a facist?IDK what that is,but I am only stating the obvious.

  • ..really you dont know what one is?!.....HAHAHAHAHA

  • hey,not everyone on YT is over eighteen, and most are more mature than to think that everyone is. -_-

  • you are a youtubepath.

  • And you care about me,why?

  • Wow, this guy can keep his spine straight. That's pretty difficult when do this stuff because it puts enourmous strain on your knees and legs. Even when he bends, his spine is still very straight.

  • its not natural but with practise its lot easy to do.

  • I don't like the sound track either and was thinking of changing it. I didn't make the video just copied it from Goggle.

  • I always liked that long over shirt GM Cheng wares. Wonder where I can get one?

  • check through ebay, they have many Chinese clothing stores. I bought from China and you can get very good deals and fast shipping.

  • Tai chi is the most powerful and subtle of the martial arts. It can be practised for life and is great for health. It is a defensive martial art in the sense, you really cant chase someone with it. the other person attacks first ususally.

  • the most powerful... no offence, but only a complete fool would say that. An art is only as good as the practitioner.

  • that is true, and I agree with you all the way. =)

  • Taiji is both offensive & defensive. by learning oneself, ones center, ones own balance, & how to move properly defense & offense are irrelevent to the resulting selfcultivated power.

  • for xxTaijixx.

by tai ji you mean tai ji quan right?

you are right about the chen. and yeah, tai ji quan can be used for fighting, and probably was supposively intended for fighting. however, the aim of practicing it, as with all martial arts, is not to fight with it. it is to increase health and longtivity. especially with tai ji quan.

  • Philosophically, yes. Yet the aim of practicing is an individual choice. Police and soldiers have trained in taiji. There are weapon forms, but knowing how to kill with a sword isn't required for health.

Traditionally, Taiji is a fighting art that trains you in a healthy way, not a health system that happens to have combat potential.

Some may only focus on the health aspects of it, but it doesn't change its nature -like exercising with a sword doesn't change that swords are designed to kill.

  • the true purpose of taiji is to understand and follow the dao. dao not of ghosts/spirits but of philosophy & personal manifestation. health/longevity is merely a sideeffect of this pursuit. one should seek to comprehend concepts such as relax, invest in loss for great gain, & 'accomplishing by not doing(wu wei)' in mind body & spirit

  • Cheng Man Ching was a Hero

  • Ah, yes. Sifu Eddie Wu can pretty much show any martial aspect he wants to.

  • Pushing hands is training, the first step to fighting, but not fighting. It teaches a useful starting point. It is useful to unbalance an opponent and finish or otherwise incapacitate or at least restrain them. If a person has lost their balnce, they can't strike well.

The reason you haven't seen a lot beyond it is that people who can show what's beyond won't, and the people who can't show can't.

  • Yang style used to, and Wu style still uses a lot of "na". Not qin-na, just na, meaning lock. Not to twist an extremity, to break. That works well. How can someone punch you effectively with a broken arm? How well can they kick you with a broken leg?

  • I've practiced Cheng Man Ching style plus sword and sabre for over 28 years. I've also studied old Wu style and Chen for over 10 years and Yoshinkan Aikido for 2. These days I am studying the standard Wu family style taught by Eddie Wu.

  • This is actually good material

  • Tai Chi isn't supposed to be for show, it is actually a real fighting style. Many people say it's boring and doesn't effective, but it actually can knock people far.

  • like your said, it's not for show, but tai chi isn't supposed to be used for fighting either.

it is supposed to build up your chi, and make yourself balanced through calm training.

however, it can hit hard or provide fatality

  • originally for fighting - tai chi chuan means "ultimate supreme fist" - but after many years of practice, produces great health

  • yeah, its that. it also can mean "extremely peaceful fist" in chinese.

if u see people PRACTICING it, they would do it slowly. very slowly. as u (b7605444) said, it is for health and longtivity. it's a soft fist, as opposed to a hard fist, like wushu or taekwondo

  • gung how!

  • Taiji IS SUPPOSED to be used for fighting. All of the major styles today were derived from Chen Style, which is a fighting art. Ask any of the current Chen Style grandmasters, and they will undoubtably tell you this is an art designed for combat, with health benefits. Yang Luchan, the creator of Yang style, was a Chen Style master and was known for his fighting skill.

  • well, see that's what kind of troubles me is that all I see taiji masters doing is push-hands, which really doesn't do anything in a fight. The only taiji guys that seem to practice strikes that I've seen are Chen-style ones. The Yang-style guys just seem content with push-hand skills.

  • And as for using qin-na to apply taiqiquan, that's fine, but many Chinese emphasize that taiji is more of a strike-oriented art, and what's the use of concepts like fajin if all you're going to do is twist someone's arm? Kind of dissappointing :(

  • tai chi's entire concept is based on overcoming a ton of force with no more than 4 ounces of effort - not for striking, but can - to absorb one's effort and make it your own, then give it back three fold - there are those that consider tai - chi to be the grandfather of all chinese gung fu

  • Actually arguably taiji was not developed until way after many external gongfu were- theoretically around 16-1700s. chinese extrnal gongfu however was developed for thousands years or so.

  • there are many diferent types of internal skills/strengths which chinese call 'jin'- more numerous than external strength 'li4'. b/c through relaxing(soft-yin) one can penetrate the oponent(hard-yang), many possible skills can be applied. ie strike the center, listen to center, uproot center, send sudden energy to center, pull & push center, etc etc. CMC(chen man ching) does utilize these strengths just like other taiji styles but is less 'flashy/external apealing'

  • depends on the teacher - long range, mid-range, short range, push range, grapple range - and then out again - this concept covers many ranges and should be practiced religiously - it enhances any other martial art tremendously - good stuff

  • INCREDIBLE BALANCE and FLUID MOTION!! Even if you dont know anything about martial arts..That much balance and fluidity WILL equal combative power and skill...It may look boring until you experience it..

  • Thank you so much for posting this. It is wonderful to see the master in full motion, previously I had only seen stills.

  • I heard he had terminal tuberculosis before he got into tai chi and that as a result of tai chi the symptoms had subsided.

  • too bad,to see the man who help his teacher, the great Yang Chengfu with the Ist book in chinese on Yang ga taichi in the 1930,but this is so water down, unlike his Senior, The great Yang shouching ,the REAL master of Yang style, Taichi that was passed on from his family,

  • you're right, i wish i could see yang chengfu, but from what i've seen, professor cheng, despite his massive reputation actually has very poor body mechanics. if u look at him doing push hands with his students, they collapse into his pushes rather then neutralise them.

  • Cheng Man Ching Taichi has very, very Poor Taichi Forms/postures, which is so water Down, But, Taichi today is just new age YOGA with Dance ,and will never Copy the postures of Cheng cheng Fu,because he was over 280 pounds. But CHENGrealTai chi is More for Fighting, all his Chinese students did very good agianst other Kungfu styles..what is Tai-chi body mechanics-alots of western bullshits, Let use only the 13 Classics for Taichi in fighting ,Forget About Science-Just like TCM & Acupuncture.

  • tai chi has two decernable features that masters look for when they see people practice - the energy in the movements and the intent one gives while practicing shows his understanding of the ancient fighting aspect of it - the correctness of form and slow without breaking balance or consistent speed throughout shows health benefits

  • great to see how he moves and holds himself

  • 這個錄影帶的版權還在時中學社喔~@_@"

  • This is Cheng Man Ching doing his version of the last section of the Yang Style form, push hands, sword form, etc. There are notable differences to the traditional Yang style, but contrary to many opinions his style is quite advanced and applies the original principles quite directly to the movements....

  • I came across it on the internet, after 28 years of doing this form, I only recently have seen film of Man Ching

  • what is this from?
