I think this represents an interesting direction for music production, recording in a studio can sterilise a good vibe sometimes and it has been done to death in truth. Good work man!
@hiiamalive I don't get a lot of snow here where I live in TN, it's beautiful when it comes down. When I knew it was going to snow, I wanted to record this song in it.
Hi ..first of all love it...great tune great singing...great playing... now the questions..Iam sure you have answered these before but have you recorded the guitar and the vocals straight into the device..
As a music lover, and minor dabbler, I find the song to be beautiful in composition, and I think that the "raw-ish" sound compliments the emotion shown. No I am not pro, I just know when I like what I hear. Damn good job.
I have a Zoom H4. It's fine for non-pro stuff, but the noise floor using the external XLR inputs is far too high for anything professional. And then there is a problem with the low-level "peeping" sound caused by the activity light flashing. The only way to avoid the peeping is to plug in AC power or record in the highest .wav setting (while on DC). Some guys have built their own external power-packs to remedy this, but that's a waste of time, IMHO.
Keep in mind, this is only a $200 recorder, and plenty of fun for the money. I don't think it's a waste of time. From my videos, you can see how much can be done with it. I haven't noticed any of the problems you're talking about. Of-course it's not pro. Pro setups cost 10s of thousands of dollars. I know, because I I run a studio with such equipment, but it's not as portable as this is. :-)
@ShaneAnthonyTheLover sir how were you able to make the vocals stereo with just 1 shure sm57? what happens to me is that when i plug the sm57 on 1 input, you can only hear the sound of the mic in one channel let's say for example you put it on input 1, then you'llonly hear it on the left channel. How is it possible that you were able to make it stereo sir=) or id you record this in the multitrack mode? thanks sir i badly need help with my shure sm57 and zoom=)
@leugimigop I recorded in multi track mode. Then you can pull up the wave files later in any DAW (digital audio workstation) that you want. For example, Nuendo, Pro Tools, etc...
Shane, If I buy the H4 and plug in an external microphone, (sennheiser e609 for micing my guitar amp) would the recording be 100 percent e609 (that's what I want) or e609 mixed with H4?
good work friend .. also bought a Shure sm57 microphone as you record the guitars .. right on your computer? ae if you can meet great result hug buddy! their cool rc helicopters .. ..
awesome song man! and i love how you recorded it outside in the snow:) very awesome, and at some points your voice reminded me of eddie vedder (i guess that's a big compliment:D)
i just think the guitar would sound better if you didn't plug it in the H4 but i guess it was much easier to record it plugged cause of all the snow:D
Hi, thanks for sharing your videos with us. You are an unusual and talented musician. I just bought the H4 and look forward to using it and sharing some of my projects with YouTube viewers later this year!
Hey, sound very nice. What do you think of the Boss Micro BR compared to the Zoom H4? I was s old on the Boss (I just scored a brand new sealed for $140 shipped!), but man I've not heard any demo's from the Boss that sound as good as yours on the Zoom. I haven't even opened my Boss Micro BR yet, maybe I should sell it and get the Zoom H4? any take on the Boss unit?
I don't remember what the features of the Boss unit are. I just know why I chose the Zoom. The Zoom H4 has a 4 track recorder that records in 16 bit 44 KHz, so if the Boss can do the same, there shouldn't be much of a difference in sound. I pull up my recorded files later in ProTools and mix them. Making something sound good has to do with having a nice sounding guitar, putting on new strings, tuning it, playing well, then mixing it well later (EQ, reverb, etc...).
Also, more features that I bought the Zoom for, were the availability of two XLR or 1/4" inputs, phantom power, the 4 track recorder of course, headphone output, USB connection, runs on 2 AAs, (the more runtime the better, and the Zoom goes a long way with 2 AAs), etc... lots of features, but having a 4 track recorder with either mic or 1/4 inputs was the most important thing. Oh yeah, it also has a built in stereo mic that sounds great! Good for throwing ideas down or field recording sounds.
I've never heard of him before, but since you posted the question, I went and checked him out on YouTube, and I must say, it was very inspiring. Thanks!
BTW..this song's opening verse reminds me of that 80s song "Northern Town" by Dream Academy (?) if I recall the group's name right. Gave me the same wintery cool and outdoor feeling. Excellent song!
You are indeed anointed by HIM and didn't realize until later that your song is a Praise & Worship song. Brother...I believe we follow the same road in music and in faith. I am inspired by your work. And one thing more- yes, I'm definitely going to have that ZOOM H4 delivered to me next month!!!! God bless!
Right. I understand that, but the internal mics on the H4 have a gain setting, and it offers compression. Sounds like no compression was used on the unit. Which gain setting did you use to record the vocals? The auto-gain or one of the High/Med/Low settings? Thanks!
I use the low setting on the side of the unit for almost everything I record, whether I'm using the built in mics, or plugging in an SM57 or guitar. Everything I play and sing gets so loud at times, that I don't want anything to clip. It comes close enough just on low. If you're in a quiet sound room, playing a softer instrument, then the medium or high settings would work great.
More Cowbells! but yeah sounds awesome dude. Funny thing is that, that is exactly what I want the H4 for. To go out in the woods and be able to record multiple tracks and work on music with no one or nothing around to bother me...
Yes, that is what I did in the video! This is a live recorded video. What you see is what you hear. I plugged my Guild acoustic/electric guitar into one of the inputs, and my Shure mic into the other. You can see the both wires going into the bottom of the Zoom, which is attached/taped to the mic stand.
Thanks! The Zoom H4 will record you in crystal clear digital quality. It's up to you to do a good performance, and then mix it well. I pulled the files up later in ProTools and mixed the song. That's the beauty of this little recorder. You've got a totally portable 4 track field recorder, and yes, it's great quality. You can also bounce tracks, if you need to record more than 4, or, it has 10 virtual tracks for each 4, for a total of 40. I used a virtual track for the tambourine.
Fuck.
