James Garner is amazing, he is the best at sarcasm. I love these satirical types of westerns there aren't too many made anymore. I did just see one film recently called Good for Nothing, it makes fun of how people glorify the West by showing its brutality, but the violence is in all good fun. youtube. com/watch?v=gRYZNCVeZDY
My favourite film of all time. How to clean up a lawless town without getting stressed whilst always being on the way to Australia and suffering from terminal niceness. Genius!
bruce dern is one of the greatest actors of the age, he has continued his work from his younger years to his older, he was amazing as joe in this scene, and personally i don't htink they hanged him he was toom uch for for the sheriff to poke fun at
This movie was way ahead of its time. I watched it alot as a kid because it was a western and I loved westerns. It wasn't til much later that I could appreciate all the great one-liners in the film and what a great job James Garner did.
@yanevenu and janice94304: Thanks for the tip! I don't own a television these days, and don't miss it much either, LOL, but it would be fun to see old Bruce Dern again. He used to be a major movie actor, but there's as much money in television as the movies these days apparently. The movies are mostly as bad as tv lately, so I guess it makes sense.
@KaptKan1 I recently saw a movie made just a couple of years ago. I forget the name of it but it was similar to "Hoosiers" only it was the true story of a girls team. Bruce Dern played the bad guy (and he played it well)
i love it when prudy is in the tree and james garner and the neighbour are talking about when prudy got her hair caught in the ice cream freezer! the neighbours laugh is just sooooo funny!
Best western spoof and one of the funniest movies, period. Always a pleasure to watch James Garner, but the whole cast here was exquisite--and this was the first time i'd ever seen Jack Elam as a nice (and very funny) guy. And Bruce Dern! "Do I have to listen to him? He ain't nothing but the town character!" Has anyone posted the scene featuring Garner and Harry Morgan where they discuss the "departing" of Prudie's mother? Priceless stuff.
This is one of my favorite movies. It's sooo funny. My parents say that it's too dumb, but then they watch Napoleon Dynamite. That just doesn't make sence.
To add my agreement with the others, I love this movie. James Garner and the entire cast is perfect. Many of the actors are from the golden age of westerns 30's thur the 50's.
omg, i love this movie! I'm 14 and I am the only person in my school who watches westerns! I love this one, my favorite. This and McKlintok (spelled it wrong, I know.)

"Joe" is Bruce Dern, a great actor from the 60s and 70s. I wonder whatever happened to him; you don't see him in movies these days.
KaptKan1 1 year ago
Sure we do. He plays "Frank," the father of Bill Paxton's character on the HBO series Big Love. Great character, too.

You can see Bruce Dern in HBO's "Big Love" as Bill Paxton's father, a villain of course.

Smoooooth acting from James Garner one of the best in the business. He make it all seem so effortless, all the while it's hard work..
