The change in tuning actually allows for different progressions (the purpose of alternate tuning in general). He tunes the E to a D and plays a little bit in that altered tuning, then brings it back to the E for the remainder of the song. It's a unique idea.

Totally disagree. Being good at playing and having a good ear are totally different things. For example, I can play Reality, Drifting, Lucy Watusi, Klimbim even the first half of Aerial Boundaries, all because I had tabs. I would've never been able to figure it all out, I'm really horrible at that. But once it's tabbed, it's just a matter of practicing a bit, no big deal.
