@rollwithit21 - the wee song at the start is the intro to an awesome TFC song called "Some People Try To Fuck With You" which appeared on the Marina label sampler "In Bed With Marina". It's on Youtube, too.
Well to continue with the theme of bands of similiar sound, check out the Storys! They are a Welsh band with lead vocals by Steve Balsamo who is amazing and had another life as a West End "Superstar"!
I was at Bowlie 2 and let me tell you these guys were by far the highlight in my opinion. Firmly cemented themselves as my number 1 favourite band ever. GENIUS
This isn't 'powerpop'! This is just plain ... errr... plain genius. Or something like that. Three chords and my heart skips a beat. Sorry. I'm feeling kinda emotional this evening.
Check out 'Big star'- Radio city and Number 1 record to find out where fanclub got that sound from. Triffids - Australian Melodrama is the big one. I love fanclub! I have a funny feeling that may be heavily influenced by 'Byrds' - Younger than Yesterday. Another classic!
Bheck out 'Big star'- Radio city and Number 1 record to find out where fanclub got that sound from. Triffids - Australian Melodrama is the big one. I love fanclub! I have a funny feeling that may be heavily influenced by 'Byrds' - Younger than Yesterday. Another classic!
Just saw them for the first time last night at First Ave with a relatively small crowd. They sound as good live as they do on their cds. First song was "Start Again". Harmonies were so good in fact I initially thought they were enhancing their vocals with recording. All five members sing. Keyboards were a welcome addition especially the Leslie organ sound on some songs. "Aint That Enough" was perfect. Very talented and personable band. Don't miss them if they perform near you.
I just bought a ticket to see them in Nagoya in two weeks. Totally serendipitous finding out they were playing nearby, well chuffed and should be well worth the £40.
Not heard this for ages and forgot how sweet a song it is. The Fannies still sound great and I remember the first time I heard 'God Knows Its True' as if it was only a few days ago.
This is summer all wrapped up into just under four glorious minutes. TF are easily one oft he best bands around, and rather sadly could not get arrested because they have such a low profile. It may be in their best interest, though. They just love to make music.
just discovered this band, love it! Scotland have in my opinion some of the best guitar and powerpop music going at the moment....can easily see these guys as an influence :D
was doing a bit of shopping here Perth OZ when i heard this feckin' brilliant sound eminating from a record store in the Carillion precinct, went in and asked the lass at the counter if it was the Byrds. she say's no mate it's Teenage Fanclub.never heard of them i say's to her, let's see the CD. went home and downloaded track one from the album Shadows, blew me away,so i'm off tomorrow to buy all of their CDs. feckin' brill sound, bonus is that they are Scottish,so much the better.
I've seen them a few times now and they are the most uplifting of all bands, ok we all know about their Big Star influences but these lads should have had MASSIVE success. I don't think they have ever recorded an even mediocre album, and Grand Prix was one of, if not the best
Love this song. Is it just me, or does anyone else hear a touch of Elvis Costello's Peace Love and Understanding from 2:00 to 2:10? Gotta be a similar chord thing.
I read that because they love Big Star and the byrds, that they were going to call themselves the Big Byrds, but they were sued by Jim Henson, is that true?
I've also read that they toyed with the idea of calling themselves The Whom.
I'm not saying it's true, but that's what I've read. And now so have you.
I'm don't know much about this kind of music (Powerpop?) but since I´ve heard Spilt Milk by Jellyfish, I´m really intrested in this kind of music, happy and heartbreaking at the same time. I listened to a Ben Folds Five album because some people compared them with Jellyfish, but I didn't liked it too much.
I liked much more this album by Teenage Fanclub. TF fans, please tell me what should I listen next, especially from the 90s.
hey epic, thanks for your comment. the TFC albums you MUST own are called 'Songs From Northern Britain' and 'Grand Prix'. or you could buy the best of album, called 'Four Thousand Seven Hundred and Sixty-Six Seconds A Shortcut to Teenage Fanclub'. these should be pretty cheap to buy on amazon i think. good luck and happy listening!!
Thanks man! I've already heard Songs From Northern Britain (and going to buy it for sure) and will check out Grand Prix. Do you know some other bands with a similar sound (especially from the ´90s)?
Hey epic! You may like the 92 album "bandwagonesque" too. It has two of my favorites "alcoholiday" and "december". For other 90s band I may recommend Del Amitri, loved them at the time, still admire.
yes, Bandwagonesque is a masterpiece. other bands to look out for from that era: The Posies, Lemonheads, Juliana Hatfield, Buffalo Tom, BMX Bandits, Telstar Ponies.....
@Stevebhoy7 - Try "Born Sandy Devotional" from 1986 which has their fabulous "Wide Open Road". They're great, though the words crystalline and jangly wouldn't come to my mind regarding The Triffids. Thanks for posting Ain't That Enough with the lovely intro!

@Stevebhoy7 - I didn't understand why someone would mention the Triffids in context with TFC in the first place, so I can see how it's possible to not like it. Just because I'm curious: didn't you even like Wide Open Road?
@epicprogrocker I know it's pretty obvious (and not from the 90's) but Big Star are great, but for newer stuff try Brendan Benson, Jason Faulkner, The New Pornographers, Treetops, Sebadoh, the Bats, the Chills and the Clean. Not all Powerpop but you might like them.
@epicprogrocker Oh, and early You Am I. I realize that it's been a while since your comment and you might know all of these, but I get super excited about this kind of music.
