  • Increible

  • beautiful. fabulous. wonderful. one of the best I've ever heard!

  • "One of the great Bach duets of all time"

actually this should be "One of the greatest..."

Furthermore, it sounds weird to say that, since Bach isn't immortal, or at least not in the sense that he would have been there to create music at all times during history, making it sensible to say something is one of the greatest Bach duets of all time.

Now, in the sense that through his music he is remembered and will always be, it's debateable if he is immortal, I'd say he is since I love his music

  • hermoso!!me encantaría tocar alguna vez la viola da gamba!

  • It just simply does not get better than this. Every bit of music that comes out of the San Francisco Early Music Ensemble rivals anything I have heard in Europe. KEEP IT UP!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Fantastic! I love this performance :)

  • Fue la marcha nupcial de mi boda, y ahora que estoy aprendiendo a tocar el violín, ¡he logrado interpretarlo, aunque sea toscamente!

This maravellous work was tha nupcial march at my wedding, and now I can play it with my violin. Hapyness!!

  • This accomplished young woman came to tucson for our annual viola da gamba

workshop recently and happens to also be a phenomenal teacher.

  • this is what keeps me learning music!

  • just a lovely performance.......

  • which 4 people disliked this????

what are people using for ears theses days??

could they even hear a door slamming??

  • I want one of each

  • wow, very nice interpretation, refined, calm, tasteful ! thank you :)

  • j'aime beaucoup, merci

  • Very tastefull and a good sound!!

  • I ♥ Baroque♪♫

  • Thank you. Very informative.

  • very nice

  • Bravo! So specila! so good!

  • Très belle interprétation,un très beau son.

  • why is the bow hold that far from the frog ? i've noticed the same with ophélie gaillard on her cello piccolo

  • There are many ways to hold a baroque bow. Part of it depends on the balance of the bow; part on the player. Some players like the bow more evenly balanced, some hold it right on the end--for example if you look at Bill Skeen playing the 5 string cello in our Bach and Italian 17th century videos. You will have to see what works for you!

  • @Walvis2007 Actually, the tension on viol bows is not adjustable. The player needs to do that with his fingers, while playing. Holding the bow as seen on this video is the only way that it can be accomplished.

  • @UncleTito72 Historical descriptions of string players sometimes mention a style of playing where the bow hair is not touched at all, and the bow is held either only on the stick, or at the very end of the bow.

  • @UncleTito72 I think Viola da Gamba music is some of the most unique, most beautiful music in the world. I wish there were more early music ensembles in the United States for everyone to enjoy because it is a shame that music has to be 500 years old or younger for people to want to perform it. I know there are a few select groups in the world that perform early music, but there should be more.

And great tips about Viol playing. Makes me want to try sometime.

  • My guess is that it allows her to play more into the string-that is what I do when I play my viola.

  • i cant decide wheter i must play clasical music or metal but i decided now i will finish arenas method book

  • consider well, time flies, and never returns, cant walk 2 paths at the same time ,go w/ tha one that weighs out the most in ur heart, and ull neva regret it

  • Could not agree with you more. Very well said.

  • DO BOTH ! nothings impossible

    im doing rock guitar

    baroque violin

and irish!! and im still alive

plus its nice to have a contrast-u dont get bored!

  • This is great! Im attempting to perform this soon on the viola and its so difficult to get the same kind of tone you produce. I would love to hear the rest of the sonata. Again, great performance.

  • outstanding! does anyone know the BWV number for this piece?

  • BWV 1027

  • @mspclassicalguitar Get the Jordi Savall recording, with Ton Koopman on the harpsichord. Celestial, there is no other way of putting it. Simply Celestial.

  • Beautiful sound, interpretation congratulations from Chile

  • very nice,

    very beautiful.

  • Good.

  • Very beautiful, congratulations!!! Do you play the Bach suites with the viola da gamba? I would like to hear your version.

  • I do wonder where you go to learn how to play that ^.-

  • One could go to Indiana or the Hague, to mention just a few fine conservatories, or contact the local viola da gamba society, such as the VdGSA in the States.

  • Listened to it again twice today - beautiful sound and so musically played - well done Joanna and Hanneke - thanks for posting this - is this adagio not often performed in general ? If so - why not..

  • From jasjib

What can I say !!!- it was just SO beautiful . I played it over and over again. I simply love the way you both played this superb piece.... it sounded even better in this hi definition version !! Thank you from Australia!!!!!

Ik was er stuk van - echt waar !!!

    Groetjes,

    Jan

  • Fantastic interpretation of a fantastic piece

  • Joanna sounds great. I remember playing with her many times at IU and at BLEMF. Such a wonderful musician. So very expressive.

  • Beautiful! I wish you had used the lute though to reinforce the bass in the left hand of the harpsichord and fill in the harmony. I play the flute and have played the trio sonata (2 traversi, continuo) many times. Thanks you!

  • You can change it to a continuo part, but then you lose the obbligato part which was written by Bach, so here we defer to the composer.

For the flute trio version it is of course a continuo part.

  • Yes, you have a good point, what I mean is, the harpsichord would play the bass/obbligato part and the lute would play the bass/continuo part. I have also played it this way with just one flute, harpsichord (bass/obbligato), lute(bass/continuo) and a baroque bassoon (bass)! Hope this helps! Anyway, I enjoyed your performance very much, this is just something to think about. Thanks.

  • Yes, you can change it, but Bach did not write it that way. If you add a a part, then you have doublings, and you have uneven doublings as well at the cadences because of the leading tones. If you can play continuo without these doublings, then you have created a separate obbligato part. But because of the structure of the piece, this would be difficult to do in a balanced way. There is room in the slow movement for an extra voice, but I can't see how it would work in the other movements.

  • A stupid question... Do violas da gamba have frets? In the video it looks like this has frets and I had not seen a viola da gamba before...

  • The viola da gamba has frets; you can see a bit more detail in the Stage6 version.

  • hermosisimo!!!!, felicitaciones
