@planetcaravan72 Bro I know this is an older video, but I just purchased this guitar. Nice work. I lost my cylinder slide so all I have is a Stevens weighted steel slide. Trying to replicate your take on Mr. Gallagher's tune is tricky with this thing. Do you still like/own this Dobro? I was upset that it was made in China, but it sounds decent for the price.
@MrLooseSkrews Hi there and thanks for your comment. Yes, sir, I still have and like my fake dobro. Who cares whether it was made in China or elsewhere. I'm a hobby-bedroom player and that thing is perfectly adequate for me. And you're totally right, the sound is fantastic for the price. I'd love to see a video of you playing....take care!
@GroovyGuitar02 you are correct, and you can buy a spacer block to fit over the nut that raised the action to an inch so your round neck can be played like a dobro, but a square neck dobro is and will always be a lap guitar.
@GroovyGuitar02 The round necks can be played like a regular guitar, but they can also be played like a square neck, by shimming up the nut to raise the action. But a square neck will always be a Dobro
Hey, so I've played the regular Hound Dog, but I haven't played the Deluxe. Have you played both? If so, is there much of a difference, aside from the pickup?
Did you get yours set up for slide? I took mine to the shop and the neck was WAY too tight, the resonator was off center too so I got a horrible buzzing noise off the strings, it's fixed now and sounds sweet! Now I just have to learn how to play slide!
Well, this in not being played over an amp. But you can plug it in and play amplified. However, I personally feel that it just takes away from the unique and characteristic sound of the Dobro, so I'd rather play unplugged.
I can't remember anything about the original strings. I'm sure I changed them pretty much right away afer I bought the guitar.
It's a very sturdy instrument, so yes, it can take of the rougher tunings.
I have no idea what tuning the guitar was in when I bought it. I am sure I tried a couple of songs in different tunings before while I was still in the store.
It's in the exact same condition as I bought it - no further modifications. My knowledge about dobros is next to none, therefore I unfortunately can't advise you on which one to buy. All I know is that this one was rather inexpensive, but it perfectly suits my requirements as a part-time bedroom player.
Thanks for the comment. Unfortunalely, I don't have any tabs available for that. I just tuned to an Open E tuning, had Rory's "Too much alcohol" somewhat in the back of my mind and started to play.
Like Rory? That might be taking it a little bit too far, my friend. He is one of the finest and I am a just part-time bedroom player. But thank you very much anyway - you certainly made my day, man - much appreciated. Thanks.
You should be alright, as it's really only the A-String you tune up to B. The G string is only half a tone, so that shouldn't do any harm. But to be on the safe side you may tune all the strings down by a tone.
Hey, I've been thinking about buying this guitar a dobro hound dog round neck, but i'm weighing up whether to or not. I play acoustic mostly, so would i be able to play normally in standard tuning on this guitar? I love the sound, and I like playing some of the blues, but i'm still not sure as they're quite expensive. How do you find the guitar? Also, whats the slidey bar thing you have on your finger called? I need one! lol!
I paid $ 375,-- (it was a sale, though) and that thing is worth every Penny. Are there better ones out there? Yes, doubtlessly - however, this one is perfectly fine for me. The sound is great and it is a solid instrument. Yes, you can play in standard tuning (or any other), no problem. But, of course, it is a Dobro after all - the space between the strings and the neck is not as narrow and therfore it takes a little more effort to play chords, etc..
The slide I was using is a "Moonshine" slide made of ceramic. It was quite expensive, I bought it in Germany before I relocated to the US - nice thing, I like it a lot. But other players prefer metal or glass, I guess it comes down to a matter of taste.
Oh, thank you. Well, the fact of the matter is, I am a lously player and I know that. But on the other hand, I have fun picking up the guitar every now and then.
Again, thanks a lot for the nice comment (and the invite, which I gladly accepted).
Hi, I think YES, definitely. However, I am certainly not an expert and therefore not really qualified to answer your question. I am sure there are better Dobros out there but for my needs this one is certainly more than good enough.
It definitely is--the ones with the "spider web" bridge have more volume and sustain than the "cone" type resonators found in the National guitars. These sound good too--just more old-timey. You can hear these on YouTube also.
It always looks weird when I see someone playing a Dobro (or any guitar with a slide) with a pick.

It seems that the round neck has a guitar's action (or so) and the square neck is "pure dobro style" with strings 1 inch far from the neck .
In another words, the roundneck ones , can them be played as a "regular guitar" also?

I think the Martin heavy gauge strings are good, but I'm a newbie in resonator guitars.
I just want to have a nice set of strings to put on it once it arrives =)
caralhosvosfodam 2 years ago
@caralhosvosfodam Guitars can't stay in open e for along time- too much tension.
tinpanalley67 1 year ago
That is the smoothest sound I've ever heard using this type of slide. Is that because of technique, the slide, or the Dobro?
basserase 2 years ago
Man, I wish I could claim it's because of my technique. But clearly "No", I think it's the slide in combination with the instrument.
Thanks for your comment - much appreciated!
