well when they dump it they can see if they put rocks in the cart and yes , the system will work in the cold... Can you get a vid of the system in action soon ?
in nework we have to recycle almost everything i wish we had this program. it would be more effective if they used a split rear loader like D.S.N.Y does one side paper the otherside metal, glass,& plastics
I dont like the idea of a scale. People will be stealing your recycling in the night and soaking all there paper with water to add weight. By wieght is a stupid idea in my opinion. RELs take a beating and what about the weather, rain, snow, and hows the electronics going to work in freezing temps. Bro, keeps us updated on this truck. Im very curious to see how its going to work.
I have had the same questions/concerns as you, but apparently its been a very successfull program everywhere that its been tried.
You know why I like it? Because in order to sign up for the recycling you have to have our trash service as well, its going to be a good way to get back some customers lost to the El Cheapo local companies, I will almost certainly get lots more customers because if you max out the program you are practically getting free trash service, no one can beat that!
I prefer a crap load of small local haulers as opposed to one gigondo homogenous completely automated Wal-Mart mega company (cough WM cough), but Waste Connections doesn't seem so bad in that regard. The Recycle Bank system seems... interesting. Its nice they're using RLs.
I think it benefits the employees to have competition also, Waste Connections pays us well because they want the best workers so they can stay on top of the market. WM really does suck, I've worked there- they are indeed the Wal-Mart of trash haulers.
WC has become quite large also but they have a better strategy in my opinion, and it will take a larger company to give WM any serious competition.
We are dominating WM in Wichita, I'm hoping to drive them out of here!
One idea would be to get on as many mailing lists as possible and get as much junkmail and catalogs as possible and just bin it all, as your points are based on the weight of the bin when they load it. Let the people who used to bother you do some good for once. ;)
Your mailcarrier may hate you for it, so make sure to tip well at Christmas.
One thing that Im wondering though-what is going to stop people from doing sneaky stuff like filling up plastic bottles with dirt, or rocks, or water, etc?
Hmmm. That may be why they are not accepting plastic sacks here. Everything has to be crushed as much as possible, unbagged and loose inside the bin. Probably so the workers can inspect the bottles and look for those kinds of shenanigans.
Good to hear! Finally getting some recovery in action your way, what's next? - greens? I suppose you'll be collecting a little less after February, eh? Thanks for the share. Be awesome to see these trucks at work! Rare for a scale to be on an RL...
It costs us $4.00 a month and they only take cardboard, newspaper, plastic bottles/milk jugs, and junkmail and magazines. We get a lot of that stuff so its easy to rack up points. You put it all in the same bin, put it out on friday, and have an online account to keep track of the points you rack up. Once you rack up enough points you just print out a coupon from a list of sponsors and get whatever. Even if you only get $5.00 off a pizza, you are still ahead $1.00 for the month.
Here they will be taking ALL kinds of plastic, and glass as well as the other standard stuff, which I think is good because people throw out a ton of glass... it just seems strange to me that all that stuff is going to get packed in a RL and then baled up all together.
It cost $4.00 a month.I could see it cost zero if you trow out a lot of aluminum cans the $4.00 would be covered right? My city is starting a volunteer recycle in january and manditory by june.Hope they don't make us buy alot of bins and stuff oh well maybe it will work out for the good?My neighbors go out about everday hunting scrap iron or anything they can sale to the recycle yard for money.Ever notice anything that you can sale for money is not liter aluminum cans don't lay long anywhere
yip, cans are worth 5 cents up here in British Columbia, Canada. They hit the ground as litter, 2 hours later some homeless guy has that same can in his shopping cart!
Very good idea Eric, You yourself see the VERY high level of waste people throw away. I would like to see this happen in the UK. I hate the throw it away mentallity we have. I myself own throw away thinks when they are totally busted. I run everything until it will go no more, And NEVER throw food away.
Hope the this will work out for you guys! It's amazing on just how much garbage is actually recycling that people just throw away carelessly,...... Good Luck with the new program Eric! Hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving!
They don't have any incentive to recycle here and since they don't even check to see what is inside the "recycle bins", many people just use them for regular trash.
Since all our recycling stream ends up needing to be resorted and much of it hauled to another location to be disposed of, it costs us a lot more than the program is worth by my observation!
Your Recycle Bank resolves all of the issues that makes our program such a waste of money!
Yeah it weighs each container, I'm not sure exactly how much the driver has to do, I assume the info is stored automatically in the computer mounted at the rear of the truck by the tipper control, the carts will have electronic tags that will be scanned by the tipper as they are dumped.
It will be carts, and they will have an electronic tag that identifies the cart to the customer so when the truck picks it up it will record the weight and credit the customer accordingly. The best part I think is that there is no need to sort, you just throw everything in the cart, even glass, no one has ever taken glass in a recycling program around here before.
Sweeeeet, it's heaps eazier throwin all recycables in 1 cart than sortin them into different carts.. I think there's only 1 council in australia that rewards it's residents for recycling right.. If my council did that, i'd be winning stuff all the time :D
well when they dump it they can see if they put rocks in the cart and yes , the system will work in the cold... Can you get a vid of the system in action soon ?

I think this will be great for the city not expensive at all. It seems really convenient and also has its benefits in the end.
