Probably a lot of that stuff that was written about Burroughs was done so against his own will i.e. when he shot Joan and such. Again, he understood the function of the media in the U.S. and so do I for that matter although I am not involved in any criminal activity he very much was.

But i think the cult of a Media whore is a new type of thing. self publicising celebs throwing their face infront over every camera of tabloid news story. But thats only as big as the subscriptions to each story and magazine. Its a total different time scale from when Burroughs was around to where we are now.

Now we are replacing it with mass surveillance literally being watched by cameras everywhere we go. it's the logical extension of what the media was used for in his time and now the watchful eye of big brother is a reality.
