Dad mentioned this game just the other day... I used to play it all the time, the tune is a permanent fixture on my psyche. Btw, the aim of the first level is to make a path from a crystal to the flashing square (you can see it on the map), the different races can make paths over different coloured squares.
@darkcaste Yeah, I read the guide on how to play this, but got stuck on one of the later levels. Didn't realise how popular this game was until recently, because I never had it in the 90s, the Amiga's best time.
@wandererlain "often cited as the first commercial title for the new Amiga 1000", that might be why everyone had it. it's been 15-20 years since I played it but I vaguely remember that when you got jigsaw pieces, it took you back to the first level, but with more baddies, more tubes and faster and faster music, everything got faster... I remember it getting pretty crazy. thanks for the vid! =)
I read a bit on Mindwalker creator Bill Williams. What an incredibly creative and talented person. While everyone else is making games on cliched themes, he makes one based on regaining sanity by tracing and crystallizing coherent thoughts in your mind, avoiding bad thoughts, and putting your shards of sanity back together. He also composed the sounds and music in this game. Sadly his life was cut short by cystic fibrosis. One can only wonder what he could be achieving with today's hardware.
@astrofly That's a terrible shame. We lost one of the really original programmers. Still, the game is pretty much immortal thanks to the great guys who made the WinUAE Emulator.
Thanks! For some reason I decided to search for this game I played 24 years ago, and I searched 'Amiga mind game' and here it is! That music brings back so many memories! I got past a brain neuron maze level where you have to avoid viruses or something, but the game just got too hard and I never finished it.
@astrofly You're welcome. I got as far as the screen where you have to solve a kind of psychedelic jigsaw but couldn't do it. Fun game to have a crack at now and then.
One of the most mysterious games I've ever played, and it influenced me in a way I still do not comprehend. Thanks for the upload!
The sound is a bit better with the filter on IMHO. That's how I played it on my father's Amiga 2000 back in 1987, that version had no way of turning it off.
lemonamiga has the manual for this game and many other Amiga games, This game came with my Amiga 500 when I got it back in 1987, the first Amiga game I ever played.
In this level, You have to forge a black path using all four races. They had to all be used and I think connect from one end to the other.
Then you went into your own brain and had to zap neurons, that part was freaky because it would pulsate at you and it would give you a "warmer" or "colder" signal based on how aggressive the beats in the music became, until you found... i believe, a door.
THEN more weirdness happened, which I REALLY don't remember clearly.... but I think there was a puzzle with someone's head.... and maybe letters... That part is really blurry because it's been a while since I played it... like 20 years a while.
Also, thank you for dying in this game; that's the best part of the music in level one, in my opinion. :)
You have also multiple views by pressing n e s w. The person playong the game seems to be using only the south view as you can see on the top right corner
Mind Walker puts the gamer in the role of a physicist who has lost his mind. Instead of resorting to drugs or therapy, the protagonist of the game decided to send his split ego into the depths of his own brain. Your job is to navigate this surreal landscape and uncover paths leading to deeper and deeper levels, with the ultimate goal of finding the hidden key to save your sanity.
Thank you so much for uploading gameplay footage of this rather, bizarre yet brilliant game. I've been looking endlessly for information and footage regarding this rather unusual experiment in gaming. I remember I used to play it with my Dad on the Amiga. This game really made me think. I never really understood it at the time, but looking back on it, the concept is way ahead of what was expected from games.
@wandererlain I got to the last level, it's where you enter your own brain and you need to locate your own brain, within your brain, by following the beat of your neuron's or something.
Anyways, there should be a way to change your character. I think you have a total of 5 characters, each with different abilities. I think the point is to make all the squares black.
The different characters I think represent the different egos, I could be wrong.
@wandererlain Yeah, if you can make a play-through of this game, that would be so cool.
There is a part right after the sequence you were playing where you're looking from a 1st person perspective and you need to enter a certain number of single-colored doors. After that, you enter your brain.
I never beat it, but if you could, you would definitely show the gaming community some real nostalgic value.
@Waxer3929 That's an idea. Thanks. I got quite far through Wicked on the Amiga but that is a toughie to conquer. And Jumping Jackson's a good one that I might try to beat one day...
I spent a lot time playing this game when I was a kid. It was the one and only game I had until I could save to purchase another. I would spend 8 hours days trying to figure it all out. You can change between four characters. Each character could leave a black square on it's particular terrain. The black squares had be adjacent to keep the path going. I think the goal was to color a path from one marker to another? The sounds were awesome. It's been 24 years... Thanks for posting it!
Ah, now this brings back fond memories. :)
Wouldn't this make a cool iphone app?
