  • 18:00 "dumbing down of science" If they cant put it simply they cant understand it. It takes someone much smarter to explain it simply.

  • Why was Heisenberg's wife unsatisfied?

When he had the time, he didn't have the energy. When he had the position, he didn't have the momentum.

  • awesome guy...i wanna se that science vs religion debate

shame his name is "cox"...i have a friend called isaac cox..ill leave u to think about way that implies

  • @omglolgiraffe Now all he has to do is marry a women with the last name "Dixen" and Hyphenate the surnames together.

My name is Dixen-Cox. Issac Dixen-Cox.

  • what happened to Jim Meets Dara?

  • Thumbs up if you really care about nature and wants to save this wonderful earth

  • We are in need of another planet like Earth to pollute it. come on guys search for it.

I am a greatest fan of Brian cox and recently in BBC desert islands show he said that he is not interested much in TV shows and wants to spend his life in understanding the nature.

  • He is Dr. Brian Cox and not Doctor Who

Allow him to do research on neutrinos and other particles that are very essential

Anyways, World is going to end cos of civil wars, world wars, economic depression and tsunamis, earth quakes, no oil, ozone problem, solar flares, space weather, global warming, fucking pollution of all types and last but not least space nuclear war. Nuclear war on space going to have devastating effect on total globe and this is the best way to end this planet.

  • Has anyone got Jim meets Dara?

  • I don't normally get jealous. But I am a tad jealous of this guy!

  • anyone recognize the song/music from the start of the video?

  • professor brian cox likes to do the science

  • No true nerd would ever pick the stones.

  • This guy was great in Manhunter and RED. Keep going Brian, rock on.

  • I want to know the full math joke he had there at the end 1.10.10 something. :-)

  • i love brian cox, very interesting man. I hate Surrey enough to want to carpet bomb the place. A great middle class slaughter, aaah, a utopian dream.

  • sat here for an hour an a half an loved all of it when it came to an end was a little disappointed fell like i needed to watch 2 more hours xD

  • Sorry,that`s meant to say,he can talk,can`t he?[It`s 1.45am !!]

  • I love Professor Brian Cox,but my word,he talk, can`t he? How on earth does he have all that KNOWLEDGE right there in his head;not one page of notes to refer to or anything?

  • @ilovefacebookandebay

It comes from years of exacting application.

  • I gotta smokey chicken in my pants.

  • That was a brilliant and extreamly nerdy way to spend 90 mins

  • his cheeks are so shiny..

  • @mhearstify Astrology does not use the scientific method to make its predictions and therefore is not science.

  • I think everyone has at least some interest in physics. I honestly can't think of any situation where someone could think of space, black holes, wormholes, exploding stars, the fact that we're made from the same stuff as stars and actually say "how uninteresting." Anybody who could think that is a fool.

  • Jim's book Black Holes, Wormholes and Time Machines really sparked my interest in physics and science and Brian Cox is a great populizer of science. This is such a treat to watch these two greats together. Kudos!

  • Briliant, my two favourite Professors.

  • people actually watched the full vid??? I KNOW I DID

  • Such an enjoyable converstaion, enjoyed every minute immencely.

  • @multiverses2013

    what's an 'orgasim'?

  • @WiggyWittgenstein a very organised sim city player.

  • A black hole could be right next to Earth, destroying everything, but Brian Cox would still be smiling all the way through it... :)

  • A passenger jet is half way across the Atlantic when the pilot and co pilot are taken ill. So the Air stewardess goes on the intercom, an asks, “is there anyone onboard who knows how to fly a plane? If so can they come to the cock pit!”

  • Up jumps a Polish passenger, and says "yes I do," and runs forward.

“Thank god,” say the stewardess, “both pilots are out & your our only hope“.

She opens the cock pit door and pushed him in. The Pole seeing all the flashing lights and hundreds of knobs, exclaims “ Holy Shit, I cant fly this” and turns to leave!

  • 3

“What’s going on?” said the stewardess. “I thought that you said that you can fly a plane“?

“I do,” he replied. “I’m a simple agricultural crop duster pilot, but in here” he says, looking around, “ I’m just a simple pole in a complex plane.”

    That’s how remember the joke

  • brian cox kick ass!!!

  • Brian Cox is scary...

  • This was in 03MS01, I was stuck in the building next door doing coursework :( , would have loved to have seen this!

  • Brian Cox is so lovely, intelligent and humble. Not to mention he's absolutely gorgeous!

  • and he(brian) is sooooooo cute

  • these two both do great BBC podcasts

  • Brian cox could kill Chuck Norris with the power of his mind

  • Would the average educated folk who has the suppressed truth of the world's history denied from them going to want to see Angelina Jolie on a talk show or learn science? let's now bring math's into the equation & work out how many people love science? How many do? What percentage is this in the world as a whole? Why waste energy on teaching a child who has no interest in science even when given a taster of this subject years of indoctrination of the subject they will never utilise?

  • My point being one school of thought can't fully work without certain other schools of thought to see another perspective of conclusively engaging the stage to be set! In the past wasn't this just how the ancient forefathers came to any conclusion of opinions. PH ilosophy, science,art,etc... Why is the world now in a state of segregated divisions of interests in our present demise of the human race? The interest of my first thought now has been forgotten because, why?

  • Let's set an example of a future event that might enfold.. Probabilities can or cannot happen? Certainty is an open book of learning within science.... Yes? Maybe? O.K. I'm going to put into the mind of the population the prediction that Angelia Jolie is going to host her own show & her first guest is going to be Sylvester Stalone.. remember the one in the movie of rocky etc.. Psychology might have a place also to play with this dilemma understanding this foresight probability!

  • I'd love to see an interview between David Icke & Professor Brain Cox... Wouldn't that be interesting to see how two different streams of eduction clash over non-conclusive evidence of scientific evidence of interests... How times are changing when humanities IQ is increasing with the help of evolutional conscious DNA interception... Take a look at David Wilcock's work to see a different angle of perspectives in our world of discovery! Brain is great man of high intellect who loves science.

  • @Blodwen0404 No thanks, David Wilcock is a wacko.

  • IRAQI PRIDE..

  • I love this man so much

  • @animandolasletras which one? they're both cool!

  • my old physics teacher happened to be a member my grand fathers snooker club, i was bad at physics, but mr dobson was a great teacher, unfortunately i used to luv the challenge wupping his ass at snooker saturday night, sit in his class in tuesday and have bragging rights he never picked on me i never bragged lol.he was trying master the jimmy white screw back, . he also was very swear hard word to beat he was , he was stunning white ball to much

  • Brian cox is a truly amazing guy. I think he should be the face on our money :)

  • Such an appalling groupie - got Brian's signature on Saturday, and it is a bit of a squiggle. Thoroughly nice guy. And Jim Al-Khalili is great as well. Has done a lot of different shows. Physics seems to have a little edge at the minute in the communication dept.

  • Science History! To the BBC, do Simon Singh's 'Big Bang'!

  • Brian Cox needs to appear on Dr. Who... it'd be a cool cameo.

  • @alksdjhfiuealhf I just stopped watching Doctor Who to watch some Brian Cox. Are you a wizard?

  • @alksdjhfiuealhf

    He is Dr. Who...

  • @alksdjhfiuealhf Brian Cox needs to play Dr. Who.

    Fixed that for you.

  • Comment removed

  • @alksdjhfiuealhf

i tought more of brian cox becoming the next doctor. he'd just need a screwdriver and all'd be set.

  • 21:00 LOL.

  • 3 DISLIKES?!

  • Thanks so much for putting this up, two of my favourite modern day physicists shooting the shit

  • He reminds me of Jonny Greenwood

  • Brian Cox wont age, he looks about fifteen years younger than he really is.

  • 0:03:25 - 0:03:35 Brian Cox is like "Haha that's so funny!" WAIT WHAT

  • @aFemale1 YOU SHUT UP

  • Best physics / maths joke: Why did the chicken cross the Möbius strip?

To get to the same side. (ba-dum-tish!)

  • @DaithiDublin

Nah, that's not the best maths joke...

What does a mathematician do when he's constipated?

He works it out with a pencil!

  • BRIAN......... COCK.......

  • @nimasha83 Prick

  • @mhearstify yes there is some truth that every body has an effect on another, that most animals have some effect tied in with the moon's tidal forces and hormones. no scientific method is used however to reach the conclusions of astrology and claims of horoscopes would be to such a degree of complexity and convolution that its ridiculous to actually say the things they do and claim its scientific.

  • James Blunt looks like Prof Cox.

  • I hate when they have a really intelligent person for an interview, and people waste questions asking about his perfect sundae or something trivial like that.

  • 3 persons haven't done a basic school...

  • @aFemale1 pedo

  • That's exactly what happen to me! I'm 16 years old now, but when I first discovered Wonder Of The Solar System, I was 14 years old. This has helped me build up my personality to think more logically. After 2 years of different science documentaries, books and more I have decided to study Particle Physics. And I'm really interested to change how the world see science!

  • the interviewer seems a bit of a knob. I dont like him, there seems a slight undertone at times?

  • @aFemale1

I'm a single 31 year old. Lets get together and see what happens. :-)

  • Science is sexy!

  • Jim and Brian really need to do a physics shows for the bbc.

  • I love someone's comment below that sometime in the future, science will find how to time travel into the past. Then why arn't they here already? Everywhere?!?

  • @SvenTviking The correct question would be, why would they want to come to this particular time? Coffee with Plato and Aristotle in the morning, lunch with Archimedes, a snack or two with Einstein, and dinner whilst observing dinosaurs at some point in the mesozoic era is more my kind of time-travel. Unless of course you prefer lunch with Lady Gaga and Soulja Boy...

  • @eaaalia so what you're saying is future scientists will be fat gluttons

  • This is a great interview between two great people

  • very interesting, however premature to discount time travel into the past. rather the bold statement that one. science perhaps will find the way. perhaps essential for the universe.......

  • @poppy1914 Dude, read what's in the quotes. That's exactly what I said to the guy that questions that astrology is pseudo-science.

  • Great discussion.

  • @mhearstify "Astrology..pseudo-science? What scientific evidence does he offer to support his assertion. Doesn't fit his thinking therefore it is not science?." Is that sarcasm?

  • I wish Brian Cox could visit Bradford University and Give an interview about universe!

  • fame is evil avoid it at all costs!

  • JULIET ROBERTS A D SWABY

  • is there any video of the lecture they talked about at the very beginning of this video? The religion vs. science debate?

  • Comment removed

  • I was unaware Jim Al-Khalili presented a discussion like this, much the same as Richard Dawkins does. Great to see though. Jim's documentaries are fascinating and educational, as are Brian Cox's, especially given the fact that i have a keen interest in astronomy. Would have been nice to see the two great minds converse more on their respective areas of expertise and less focus on Brian's personal life but i suppose that was the whole point of the program.

  • @mhearstify It does conflict with physics (and science in general) to believe astrology because there's no actual evidence that anything of the sort happens. In fact, having a few people in the room while you're being born has more gravitational influence on you than the planets would.

  • @rupertparry I think more to the point is dimissing astrology -- or any branch of knowledge for that matter -- equipped with nothing more than unsubstantiated assumptions. IMO it is unscientific in the broad sense of the term.

I think you'd agree, that a failure to apply the necessary framework of reasoning in ones study of a given subject, almost always invokes the wrong conclusions.

I doubt Cox knows or cares that a framework for astrology exists.

    Thanks.

  • @mhearstify Astrology relies on the assumption that the planets somehow affect humans during birth, which as I have pointed out, is impossible as far as physics is concerned. More importantly though, it makes unfounded assumptions on how the world works which is in itself unscientific, and thus is a pseudoscience.

  • @rupertparry well as much as i want too agree with yourself i do find it interesting how the moon seems to have an effect on people hence the phrase (luna)tic.Police and other public services recognise this factor to the point that they in some cases deploy more staff to deal with disorder under a full moon.It is the mark of an educated person to educate a thought without believing it.

  • I was afraid that Brian's carrier is in danger and maybe this interview is the final attempt from Jim to slow him down.... :))))

But I was wrong! Very good to see that things are controlled very well by Jim who does give a great care of the vibrations of the universe even in a situation like this...

    :)

  • I was thinking just yesterday if these two guys would fit in the same room once... :)

And wow - I think I must have opened some sort of parallel universe out from Schrodingers box :))))))))))

  • @molekulaTV

But there are already infinite universes that have had Jim and Brian in the same room.

In fact there are also infinite universes where Jim and Brian are having a ninja fight. @_@

  • met jim at a university open day, really great guy.

hope to meet brian some day.

two of the best minds ever

  • Brilliant interview

  • An amoeba’s tick: Rational thought will defeat religion and eradicate its menace, but collective realisation of both our and our loved ones status beyond death will lead to our species premature end. Ann Druyan, when recounting her last moments with her husband Carl Sagan, said: "The tragedy was that we knew we would never see each other again". In my opinion, recognising this statement as true will not lead people to simply accept the precious nature of time, but will make them react angrily.

  • Enjoyable if perplexing.

  • This was a fantastic talk! Glad to see it online finally :)

  • at 40m 50s surely Brian doesnt believe in luck good or bad hehe

  • Jim, .. if you read this ... a great interview, loved the whole thing. .. My only gripe, the audio was a little low, any chance you could clip your microphones a little higher up the collar for the next one.

  • Don't get me wrong, Wonders of the Universe was great, but I was disappointed. There was hardly any physics in it. Half of it was Brian up a bloody mountain looking gazing into the distance and saying "Oooh, that's beautiful and amazin'".

Personally, I would prefer to see much more nitty gritty physics. Jim's documentaries are so much more to my liking.

Anyway, they discussed this so I won't push it!

  • @Nilguiri I'm sure lots of folks want more complex TV shows, but TV commissioning editors want more viewers, so the more they can make their science shows look like Coronation Street crossed with x factor, the happier they are. Unless these people wake up, you won't see any decent science docos on TV any more - they'll all be on you-tube, and Brian will bring the mass audience for them. TV will eat itself. Eventually, only morons will be watching, and you-tube will triumph.

  • @Oceanus57 I am laughing... good point u have really :)))))))

  • @Nilguiri Got to remember that they will have Brian doing whatever gets the most view for the BBC! But I agree more details would be far more interesting.

  • @Nilguiri Got to remember that they will have Brian doing whatever gets the most view for the BBC! But I agree with you more details would be far more interesting, unfortunately our views are not mainstream.

  • @Nilguiri ...I couldnt agree more.. Jim Atom prog was just amazing. Did u see it>

  • @37Rusty

Ah yes, I saw those. Fantastic! That was from a 3 part series that Jim Al-Khalili did:

The clash of the Titans, Atom - The Key to the Cosmos, The illusion of Reality.

I also saw Everything and Nothing which was excellent, too.

The Story of Electricity should be out soon: There's a trailer here: watch?v=fYQVVwFj5c8

    ;)

  • @Nilguiri

man you are reading pages directly from my mind. I'd much rather listen to Jim's more involved explanation of the mechanics than Brian's more flower childey approach

  • @Nilguiri While I agree with you, you have to understand that Brian is the face of Physics/Universe as Carl Sagan was. He is the link between science/scientists and the public. To get into nitty gritty is to loose what he has, an audince where otherwise you would not find one. I am sure after they filmed they both went "phew, i'm glad that's over, now we can finally talk physics"

  • @Nilguiri It's hard to ignite a curiosity about physics if you get into the "nitty gritty" he tries to make people want to ask those questions first.

  • @Nilguiri I guess with television there is a tough balance that has to be met; one of detailed advanced material vs. the casual viewer and ratings.

So glad we have the internet. Television is an anachronism at this point.

  • @Nilguiri I agree to a degree, but there is no denying that Professor Cox has been able to draw the lay community into physics through his simplistic explanations and scenic programming. I think personally that his programmes were very enjoyable, if a little dumbed down for the general populous (that's not meant to sound offensive).

  • @Nilguiri Brian's shows are for people who don't know anything about physics, he's trying to get people excited by science, by showing people visual dramatics it excites them

  • @Nilguiri Couldn't agree more, for people really into their physics Wonder of the Universe was way too simplistic, but to be fair it's purpose was to get kids interested in science and cosmology, not help them pass an exam.

  • @Nilguiri There was also a great deal of time consumed by repitition of: "million billion billion billion...."

  • @craigpsimpson Can't give the actual number to the masses so it has to be dumbed down to help it be understood a lil better...

  • @Nilguiri much like kaku, cox is a tv clown at best... its the physics equivalent of a professional builder watching home improvement.

  • @Nilguiri i agree

  • @Nilguiri Its Documentaries like this that get people interested. Watching Carl Sagans Cosmos has changed my life and inspired me with a passion to understand our universe. If I was bombarded with maths for 13 hours I think I may have come out with a different attitude. If you want cold hard physics watch a lecture on fora.tv, not a Sunday evening BBC2 documentary. My two cents :)

  • @EddyRX10 Couldn't agree more. Brutal maths is great, but has to come after inspiration.

  • @EddyRX10 hey now, fora.tv has great, interesting lectures, don't lump all physicists into the boring category! Some know how to engage an audience very well, and make physics exciting and fun!

  • @BUDGETFREE agreed, when I saw Brian talk as part of the Infinite Monkey cage tour he did just that. I love fora.tv and have watched many great talks on there. I'm merely stating that a Sunday evening BBC is bound to be slightly more wishy washy than a straight up physics lecture to appeal to a wider audience. :)

  • @EddyRX10 *documentary

  • @Nilguiri You're funny. But this was made to get average joe, like me, interested in physics. But yeah, "Oooh, that's beautiful and amazin'". Love ya Brian!!!!

  • @Nilguiri I see where ur coming from and I personally prefer Jim's documentaries too (only marginally though). I don't think this is because of any negative aspects of Brian's documentaries though. They basically cater for different audiences- Jim caters for those that already have a decent interest in Science, whereas Brian caters for people who don't usually have interest in science. The great thing about Brian's documentaries is how well they inspire the general public to become interested.

  • @tooplanx

Have you seen Jim's "The Secret Life of Chaos"? It's one of the best documentaries I've ever seen.

  • @Nilguiri Also by Jim Al-Khalili: Atom (3 AMAZING program series on quantum mechanics) and Shock and Awe: The Story of Electricity. They don't have the "saganian" aesthetic of Wonders of the Solar System or Wonders of the Universe (music, amazing CGI, etc.), but they are absolutely marvelous.

  • @Nilguiri Where can I find it ??? I've only been able to find parts of it on youtube. If you'd be able to send me a link or anything it would be greatly appreciated !

  • @JG129 The Pirate Bay..... make sure you have downloaded uTorrent first though.

  • @Nilguiri Thanks for that top comment I'm going to look for that documentary now! :)

  • @Nilguiri i agree but cox must entice a lot of people to these topics who don't even watch documentaries on tv, let alone knowledged about science..i guess dumbed down is the word though, but that can be a good thing occasionally?

  • @jorgepeterbarton

    I couldn't agree more!

I was only really speaking about my own preferences.

  • "/ i feel really bad for asking for a photo now...

  • Fantastic! Watched this live. My twitter question too at 1h11min (@meteoriot) :)

  • @richy1980uk so why'd you come to youtube to watch and comment...

  • yyyaaaayyy!! thanks! :D

  • Brian Cox loves physics...and helicopters :)

  • Yes! finally
