  • I think they did destroy the design, when they changed the rear window .....I simply love the oval

  • Nuccio Bertone is the great automobile Designer appearing in this comercial or an actor that quite resembles him. I would say it is the second option.

  • Nuccio Bertone is the great automobile Designer appearing in this comercial

  • It must be a 1957 commercial... VW always introduced the years model in the preceding August.

  • All people in this movie are obviously German actors. They speak Italian in the ad, but with a thick German accent, including the alleged designer. So the story that it was an Italian designer to change the oval shape of the rear window is probably only an adevertising stunt.

  • I remember this story.

We are lucky the only Pininfarina's hint was ONLY to enlarge the rear windows. Italians, now and in the past, are the better car designers, and their hints are orders for car manufacturers.

  • vw beetle italian?

  • no, the beatle is german, but it his tuning from italian designer

  • and the only tuning is the largest of posterior glasses 1:04

  • Do you know who italian designer was? Pininfarina... Giugiaro Bertone...?

  • i dont know

  • This is just a commercial. The whole story of an italian disigner was just made up. The only italian designer who is attached to volkswagen is Ghia. He designed the Karmann Ghia.

  • ? I DUN GET IT

  • you dont have the beetle's prototype.

  • i Do xx

  • d'you think they drove their car down from germany??

  • they took it on ships duh

  • Interesting ad... there was a brief trade in '60s Britain, updating the oval rear windows with later metal cut from scrappers. This resulted in an unusual Beetle with the oval-style dashboard and small windscreen, but the post '58 rear window!

I wonder if any have survived?

I notice this ad conveniently ignores those other '58 changes!

  • I love the announcer's voice. Perfect for the ad.

  • Great stuff..imagine more ovals in 58'!! The square window would have eventually come about..glad I have a 56'!

  • nah, they shoulda kept the baby window.

  • ahhh yes, they don't make good honest cars like this anymore..

  • The Beetle was still a few years from catching on in America where it was still all about Tail Fins and Chrome.

  • Yes the Oval was the coolest

    He Destroyed it

  • that guy sould have been shot for what he did the Oval was the best looking Beetle ever and he destroyed it!

  • the oval was beautiful no doubt, but it was like looking through a diving mask. vw likes form following function.

  • bugz4me.. I suppose we wouldn't like the oval so much if they hadn't stopped making it, if you see what I mean!

elilichtenberg... The visibility was pretty poor for reversing, but worth it for the beauty and interior 'cosiness'!

  • wtf did i get -1 for

  • oval and out.

  • well i mean the window was to let you see more =/

crazy italians ruined the oval window

  • It is! =/ He killed it! =o

  • YEAH i have a 1932 VW bug

  • What is the Italian designers name that changed the rear window?

  • I think it were the VW designers themselves. I think the whole story that an italian designer changed the window, is a myth.

  • @beetlejuice150 Well, the VW ads of the time were usually based on true stories about the car, so, there's a good chance that it actually happened

  • @beetlejuice150 I've heard that it was Pinifarina who suggested rear window enlargement.

  • @beetlejuice150 it was pininfarina that (allegedly) changed the rear window

  • PININFARINA!

  • these VW adds were great..

My Son has a 1956 model

    Lee

  • You're welcome!

  • yes, ithink theyre philosophy has changed a bit.66stock.

  • "A Volkswagen is never changed to make it look different. ONLY to make it work better."

    Has their philosophy changed???

  • Unfortunately, I think it has. They've had to change it due to increased competition worldwide. Most customers these days want a new look w/new bells & whistles every 3-4 years.
