I agree with everyone that the stupid ass computerized special effects of today still cannot compare to the genius behind this transformation scene. Love this movie!!!!!!!!! Friikkkeeen amazing!
"I'm a werewolf, she's a werewolf, he's a werewolf, we're a werewolf, wouldntcha like to be a werewolf too?"
Uh, no actually, not after watching this. Anyone wanting to be a "creature of the night" would have to have rocks in their head if this is what you go through. Imagine suffering through that every full moon...
I thought that actor did a great job in this movie. Why didn't he get another big movie role right after this one?? Hollywood is whacked...
@MaskedMarvyl Judging by what happens afterwards, he doesn't seem to remember the experience he went through. He wakes up the next day naked and refreshed - like having a heavy night of drink and sex and murder without a hangover! :D As for other film roles, David Naughton wasn't bad, but I think I almost saw him smirk during the transformation scene. The best acting was from Brian Glover - with nowt taken out :) - or Rik Mayall - who said nowt at all. There. I said it...
@ShaneMcD77 who is Rick Mayall he wasn't in this movie, neither Brian Glover? also i think he did quite well acting in this scene, if he would've smirked he would have ruined the transformation, he didn't it was amazing, he screamed, and begged like it should be done, good job David, really doubt he would smirk, being in the floor for 8 hours, and make up for 3, for 6 days straight, he even said it was boring and felt like quiting so, tell me were he smirked cause he didn't
@kentonjkobza Rik Mayall is an extra in the first Slaughtered Lamb scene - non speaking part. Brian Glover is the bald guy in the same scene who warns them to "stick to the roads" on the way out. Maybe he didn't smirk but just as he's looking at his hand I thought I detected one. I pick holes in things I guess too much... This is one of my favourite scenes of any movie - never mind horror. It's mindblowing and groundbreaking, and few things have surpassed it...
...it's why I have it up on YouTube. And I'm so fucking glad Mr Naughton didn't quit like you said he was thinking of doing - don't think many people would have the patience for that kind of work! I didn't mean any offence. Sorry...
This show is 41 years ago but it's amazing how the special effects still stays! "The Wolfman" transformation is also not bad. Much to say the Lycans in Underworld. :P
@proguy95 I completely agree, after so many years, this very scene and special effects still stands strong. Also, I've read that Rick Baker, the one responsible for this epic scene in American Werewolf, was also the one who did the special effects in the movie, "The Wolfman" and even had a cameo as the Wolfman's very first victim. :)
Look in a mirror, grab your head and shout "Jesus Christ" at the top of your voice. " I laughed at myself so much - does that mean I have humour issues?
@skeaneable ANY werewolf transformation - Thriller, Teenwolf. Beforehand it was fades and blends that never took into account the physical pain that would be involved in the change of the bone structure and all the rest.
@ShaneMcD77 agreed, sept one thing, thriller was the same director and writer as this movie, believe it or not, and michael jackson does look like he's in pain while transforming, because the same director and writer...k.. also michael jackson doesn't really become a werewolf more like a werecat lol

I was a kid when I first saw this transformation and it scared me half to death. The artists/artist who did the latex and puppetry for this scene really did a trerrific job. Even today this scence scares me and looks so painful. Kudos to the persons/person that put such dedcation into this. Kudos (Applause) I say!
That would be multiple Acadamy Award winner, Rick Baker. This was probably the film that really put him on the map but he'd go on to do some amazing stuff. Google him.
I like how this is the raw version on a VHS tape, before the digital remastering!!! I can just see certain details and textures more clearly in certain areas.
Hey sorry to Spam, but I have written a FREE EBOOK Werewolf novel. If anyone is interested there is a link to it on the promo video that I made on my channel. Again I am sorry to spam but I am just trying to spread awareness about myself as an author.
@theabominationuknow I don't see this as spam. Spam is a copied and pasted message or a bot directing you to dodgy sites; I see what you're doing as valuable self promotion which is something no one should be apologetic for. Your message was specific and well placed. Good luck to you as an author - it's a tough game to get into! Will maybe get a look at your channel at some stage. Let us know of any success!
@theabominationuknow You're very welcome. The internet is full of spammers and rubbish, and you are not part of that. I am an aspiring author myself and see the internet as a powerful and free tool to get me the publicity that I would want. I just need to finish editing that fuckin book I've been writing since NaNoWriMo 2007. :D
I was never thought AAWIL was any more than a mediocre film but this scene is still amazing to watch nearly 30 years later. Makes me long for the days when CGI wasn't in use as It's used far too often in my opinion.
Tremendous, goes brilliantly with the song. Bad Moon Rising also works to perfection in this movie. One of the best ever made. Fantastic from start to finish. First saw it when I was 9. Amazing how you don't even remember the nudity or porn as you were so terrified!
Now this is a werewolf...... and this is how a werewolf transformation should be "slow and painful"....... and not like running then jumps to the air and turn to a big puppy Twilight shit.
@1sherwin just to let you know,in twilight there not werewolfs, there just wolves.thats why the transformation quick and not painful,so yeah get your facts straight.i mean come on do they really LOOK like werewolves to you?if they do your pretty stupid
@1sherwin not to be a nerd lol, but I read the twilight books and in the last one it explains that they are actually shape shifters.. and actual werewolves do exist
@1sherwin also able to controll to become a wolf, and have control of the wolf as being the wolf, shit stick to the orginals hollywood producers change on a full moon, and not able to control the creature and not just, turn into it right away like you said, slow and painful, well put, also the fact that to become a werewolf you have to be attact not born with the blood or, have to kill somebody, hollywood, can suck my dick, unless they make movies like this, i don't want to see it.
why is it a necessity for all werewolf movies to start the transformation off with a hand shot? Don't get me wrong, the quality is usually good, but its like that almost ever "I'M CHANGING!!!!!" werewolf shot in movies. Why??
now that was an awesome transformation into a werewolf, it was a full moon night and the guy turned into a scary looking werewolf, not like that bullshit jacob werewolf on twilight, this was better, i dont give a shit if CGI was used or not, twilight sucks, i wish they made another werewolf movie like this one
I think its really stupid how he is just casually reading and then right away he is in pain and starting to transform. No build up to the start of the transform, no shots of him feeling weird before he screams out jesus christ? and I think that this transformation is to long aswell.
@maoribrotha53 its dissapointing cus its not like every other werewolf movie? lol, is there a ''werewolf science'' that specifically explains that it has to be extremely cliche?
@oleost1342 Well sure, you listen to Eddie Van Halen now and say "geez, that's like every other guitar shredder ever". But he was the first and it was groundbreaking at the time. Just like this scene, it was the first where we saw an explicit detailed transformation, No one had ever seen something like this on screen, and of course it became the norm to the point where it's now a cliché.
@maoribrotha53 I agree with the first part of what you said. It would have been better if he'd have maybe started to sweat a bit on his forehead and then started to feel out of breath and looked confused why he was suddenly feeling really unwell and gradually built up into a scream. The length of the transformation is fine. You can't expect someone to change from a human to a werewolf in 10 seconds. One of the best bits of this scene is when the camera cuts to the mouse.
@ShoelaceGirl2012 My guess is because the transformation was easier to create beginning with a naked body, as opposed to having shots of clothes tearing over the various transformation stages....
I LOVED this scene in the movie, and still watch it alone. The pain plus the music and the slow transformation makes this a hit. Best werewolf scene ever.
I once watched this scene as my cousin's pet chow that I was a little scared of straddled my back and sniffed my neck as I laid on the floor watching! LMBO
David Naughton and Rick Baker made two and a half minutes feel like an eternity.
John Landis had to fight to get this movie made - so, please...please, if you are reading this as a fledgling director and have a brilliant idea for a movie then don't give up hope. If you have to make low budget films for 2 years before making a masterpiece like An American Werewolf in London then we will all gladly say thank you.
@TheWilliamon yea my dad told me about it and said that it was pretty spooky and he's hard to scare when it comes to movies. So that why i'm checking it out.

What's with the music playing in the background? And it is so fake, it can't be scary.

@mrsdracomalfoy1000 Shut up, this is real hard work from Rick Baker! It's brilliant.

Listen to that howling. It sounds amazingly like the video game "Altered Beast" howl.

CGI will hardly beat this (but there's a pretty nice transformation in The Wolfman, though)

One word: AWESOME!! Rick Baker is a great genius with the makeup effects.

I don't know how or if this can ever be beat. I'm not saying there isn't a way, just saying its not something i see happening.

The hell? The werewolf sounds at the end was the exact sounds used in Michael's transformation in Thriller. O.o
Etkar2008 9 months ago
@Etkar2008 Technically the Thriller video sounds like the AWIL tf. This came first, though both effects were created by the same man.
