Some good ideas John. Two suggestions: eliminate the wrench tightening with a hand knob on the underside of the platform. Second, eliminate the the skew adapter by making a t-square design from the start with all three 'V' shaped tool troughs across the 'T' rack (the two end skew-troughs could have some adjustment built into them as well). But good ideas and good video.
Thanks for your question. To build the jig in the video, I used a Table Saw and Drill press. However, I suspect you would receive just as good results with a Skill saw and hand drill. ---John---
You should be fine. The jig is made to be adjustable for various lenghts. In fact none of my cutting tools are the same length. Hope this helps. ---John---
I've never turned a piece of wood in my life but I've just bought a lathe on the strength of your excellent work. All the instructions stress the need for SHARP tools but none of 'em show you how to keep 'em that way. Thanks John.
would it not be better for the edge to sharpen all your tools on the side of the grinder to insure a flat edge rather that the curved or [ hallow ground] edge.
The wheel is just cut out of a rock. There's no point to removing the sharpening surface from the side. But if you want to use it, good luck with that.
hey umm.. is there a way to find somekind of jig for sharpening? im a decent woodworker myself, and i have been turning pen blanks ofor a year or so now. what do you use? i dont have enough money rite now to get the book. (im a kid saving for france)
Excellent videos, but you should never sharpen on the side of a grinding wheel. Good way to lose an eye, or worse. Wheels can and will "shatter" doing it that way.
nice jig

From reading the comments and questions, people don't seem to pay attention to the video. He answers your questions if would just listen. Absurd.

What tools do I need to build the jig? I'd hate to buy the plans to only find out I need $700 worth of power tools.

Great video. If you couldn't sharpen on the side of a wheel then why would the manufacturer put a sharpening surface on the side?
