  • I have a Toshiba 42HP66 with red snow in the picture; it's most apparent when blacks are displayed. Vs and Va voltages are correct. Any suggestions? I've searched a bit on the Internet for a solution.

  • @hoopfan71 I can't seem to find the service manual for that set. If lowering the Vs by one volt or so doesn't help, you probably need to get the manual and find the adjustments for the Ysus or Zsus boards.

  • hi ..

I have a plasma tv which is equal to the planar SMPS PD42ED is BN96-01217A, case no voltage out on the create VS ..

Where do you think the damaged component ..

    thank

  • Hi, I've just picked up a 42 inch samsung plasma with the exact same PSU board. No power on, bliking red light. The 4 larger capacitors on the board are in very bad condition, their top is inflated, almost to a semi-spherical shape !. No visible damage on the smaller capacitors. I ordered the parts (those big "snap-in capacitors are not very easy to find, at detail electronics retailers), I cross my fingers and hope it will work, this screen should be a great upgrade to my home cinema system :)

  • @msylvain59 I had to replace a lot of small capacitors on these power supplies. All of the ones between the two heatsinks that are covered by the big metal plate, along with a few on the other side of the board.

I've had a couple sets where those big caps are bulged out, but half the time it was just the plastic wrapper being shrunk from heat. The caps themselves weren't bulged.

  • I have an ILO 42 inch plasma that is almost the same as this, The old one would come on but then a red LED would come on so I didn't see any bulged caps so I replaced the man Power board. I turned it on but it still stays on standby with the purple light and no pic any direction as to where to look would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Wil

  • @wilcomail Hard to say what the problem is without seeing the TV. Did you buy a new or used power supply? There could be other problems that would cause it to shut down.

  • @Maxxarcade I purchased a working used power supply, I do not get the red led anymore but the tv is still on standby it wont power on with the power button once the main power is turned on. I get that purple light in front ovr the power button. The set looks dead on to this one with the exception that its Ilo brand.

  • @wilcomail I had a similar issue when I got a power supply off Ebay that was supposedly working. I wouldn't rule it out.

Are you sure it's the same TV under a different brand? Sometimes they look a lot alike, but use different boards.

What is the part number on your power supply? Does it start with LJ44?

  • @Maxxarcade The TV is an ILO P42BSKH, the power board is model LJ44-00068A and the sub power is model LJ44-00061A. I got it for free to try and fix it. I didn't see any caps that looked bad so I just purchased another power board since it was giving me that red LED. The TV just stays in standby mode but wont power on. Thanks for the reply I really like your work. You seem very relaxed around all this stuff and that shows you know your stuff.

  • @wilcomail That is a different power supply than the TV in this video. These use an LJ44-00051A.

If you have a good multimeter and know how to use it safely on high voltage, You can check the outputs of the power supply. Is there a chart inside the TV that lists the operating voltages (Vs, Va, Ve, etc.)?

  • @Maxxarcade Yes sir all that is in there and I do have a multimeter now all I have to do is learn to use it and I'll be dangerous :)

  • seeing as you seem to know a fair bit about plasma and lcd tv's... i was just wondering, my old lcd tv started dimming and burning out in one corner... I was just wondering what could cause something like that... because Iv'e never seen anything quite like it before

  • @Dragonsrule89 Most likely one of your backlight lamps is going bad. You can buy replacement CCFL lamps on ebay, but they are a lot of work to install, and extremely fragile. A TV shop might be willing to do it, if the TV is worth the cost to you.

  • Hi have a phillips plasma 42in when i switch it on i get a clicking sound and a flashing red light opened it up had a look at the power board but no bad caps well that just by looking can't see any cap with bumps or leaking caps any clues mate?

  • i repaired a DTV Converter Box which had a bad Cap In the SMPSU Part of its board.. was stuck on standby

  • shame they make them so shit Throw away world

  • If I had to buy a new flat panel TV, what brand would you recommend? They all seem like cheaply made crap nowadays anyway. Long live tubes!

  • Offtopic question but do you have any experiences with Ltec caps? Got an old LCD TV, Philips which has those caps.

It's like 4-5 years old and haven't had any problems yet. I know the caps are made in Taiwan, that much I could find out using Google. Don't know, just thought I'd ask an expert regarding what to expect. :)

  • Ltec is not too bad. In fact I have a high end Netgear LAN switch that uses them, and it's been running for 2 or 3 years now.

  • Nice to know, just been watching your vids and you seem to praise US and Jap made caps so much that I got worried. :)) I guess there are some exceptions. :)

  • I try to use US and Japanese caps whenever possible because they last longer under stress.

There is a list of known bad caps on the Badcaps (dot) net forums. Ltec is probably on the list, but is nowhere near as bad as some of the others.

  • How often and frequent are caps an issue with the televisions that come into your shop?

  • Probably 95% of them. Ones from the early 2000's are some of the worst.

  • Very High

Is it the same for flat monitors aswell?

  • Yes, those are mainly what I'm referring to. A lot of electronics from the late 90's through today (especially computer stuff and TV's/monitors), had bad capacitors.

  • I guess you dont mind eh? More business

  • Are there enough caps in there?

  • We just bought our second Insignia 42" LCD from Best Buy. we bought one about 4 months ago and LOVE it. The one we bought 2-3 days ago is in our room. I've heard that they're last years LG. I don't have any complaints yet.

they both have PS3s connected to them, and the one in the living room is on a battery backup, and our room setup will have a battery backup in the next few days.

  • That thing sure is packed with components...seems like a lot to go wrong. Are newer plasmas that full or have they slimmed the circuitry down quite a bit?

  • As far as I know, they have not simplified the circuits much since this one was made. But I haven't worked on one any newer than 2005 or so yet.

  • Good stuff man!

  • have a Westinghouse TV, paid 700 6 years ago, still mint, but does anyone know what fails on these TV's? it's a 42

  • These videos are great. Very interesting.

  • Neat job! very interest information.

  • where do you keep getting these nice big tv's from? i want some

  • That just appalls me that they put such substandard components into an expensive item like that.

  • I know, it seems that cheap caps are the plague of all electronic devices these days. What happened to TV's that lasted 30 or 40 years before the caps went out of tolerance?

  • Its surprising how a lot of TVs have stupid designs in them. My brother has a Samsung 40 inch 1080p LCD and it uses those touch type buttons on them and his went out and the TV goes bananas and wouldn't work right, after the part got changed it worked fine but a simple board to control the channels, volume, etc (power was somewhere else) would make the TV pretty much useless.

  • Damn that's awesome! You aren't going to keep it now??

  • Not sure yet... I already have one in my bedroom that I don't use, so I'll probably just sell this one. It's not HD, but would be a good video game TV or something.

  • @Maxxarcade actually it is an HDTV it goes up to 1080i and 720p... i have this same one :) ... how long should i expect this puppy to last? Ive had it for like 5 years

  • @littmick Correct, it will scan to 720P and 1080i, but the screen itself is only 852x480 resolution (480p). These types of TV's are called Enhanced Definition, since they can display HD content, but only at a lower resolution.

When these TV's failed, the standby power supply burned out. The audio also had started to get distorted due to bad capacitors on the main control board.

  • wow, you know like everything, where did you learn all this?

  • Electronics have been a hobby of mine for 20 years :-)
