Just remember that anything and everything that makes your life even a little bit easier, is always going to be more expensive. Kits especially. And anything that's pre-built. That's why I bought all the individual parts for an Arduino prototype setup, including an unprogrammed ATmega328, and built my own parallel port ICSP. Cheaper than a USB Arduino board all set up for me.

also that batchPCB is expensive...a lot of things at sparkfun are expensive... somethings don't, like mcus, ics, some breakout boards, etc.
I just love when they get cheap stuff because I'm not the kind of person that can pay for expensive stuff =(
I know that you can get a lot of "free trouble" by trying to get cheaper deals, for example, I'll probably have to solder a lqfp100 stm32 ic to a pcb next week =S
