There was a time, about 6-7 years ago, when dubstep's fanbase did NOT consist of geeky, potheaded, computer dorks. The variety of songs was, of course, neither as multitudinous nor was the quality as good as it is now, but still. It used to consist of fans who used to be hella into psychedelics, progressed from the ol' rave scene initiators like trance to psy trance to hard house to speed garage to breaks to jungle to dubstep to drum and bass to hard techno/tech-house, and then back to dubstep.

Its not necessarily a bad thing but people that like dubstep should prepare for it to go into the total mainstream and you know, be crossed with American hip hop and pop and so on. I wouldn't be surprised at all, it is a very compatible musical style with most anything. When you think about it a lot of dub is repetitive too, so something will have to happen that will bring it new energy, kind of how ska went through several waves and everything. I'm not sure how I feel about this yet.
