This was a stop over on our way to HNL (Honolulu International Airport), no refueling jus unload the passengers and their bags and off we go...much lighter.
I flew the third L-1011 That came to Delta's fleet. I flew the 727 before that as my very first plane. So i Flew the third L-1011 That came in our fleet and i flew the Second Last L-1011 to be retired in February of 2001. I miss the Tristar. Long live the L-1011 Tristar.
I envy you sir for flying this legendary aircraft! I was 2 years old when I flew on the L-1011 for the only time in my life and have no recollection of it sadly. I saw one taking off from KDTW last summer and I made my girlfriend pull off of the road so I could watch it. I met a commercial pilot for AA at a neighborhood cookout who said a 757 with RB211's was 2/3rd's of a TriStar. You are a very lucky guy.
Thank you for this video. My favorite airplane video on youtube.
Interesting how the pilots spool up the engines before the plane is lined up with the runway. Love how they bring the throttles first to one level (maybe 50%), then after a few seconds up to take off power.
Also interesting to hear that harmonic that rattles the window at a certain engine rpm. Bet Lockheed's engineers pondered that one for a while!
Is there a Delta L-1011 pilot here who can comment on this video?
On the RB211's there is a very classic low whurl spool. Check it out on the 757-200. Just above idle the "mousing" low whurl spool you can hear, thats what causes the virbrations. It doesn'y happen on the 757, because it's cabin windows are layed out better.
That is the most glorious sound on earth! That aircraft surely wasn't going all the way back to the mainland was it? One hell of a take-off performance if it was!
My father flew for Saudi Arabian Airlines, and I used to ride on the L1011 on a lot of domestic flights. I'll tell you, when I was a little boy, i'd see the "Tristar" by the tail. But when I heard the whine of those 211s, I knew right then what I was gonna be.
shame all of Delta's L1011's are either used in Asian countries or rotting in the desert...and yeah, I love the sound of the RB211 spool up...like no other!
boy he just floored it out of there, huh?

@tengoindiamike Sorry I didn't reply right away, I usually just watch videos on here and not check my messages. It was American Trans Air (ATA)

I've been on that flight before. It was the shortest flight for an L-1011. Great memories...Thanks for posting!

Yeah...just thought that using Wailuku would be easier for those that never been here before and to find on a common map.

This is going to Honolulu...a stop over from Lax.

The airport is in Kahalui, not Wailuku.

The airport is in KAHULUI, and the adjacent town where the airport is located is Wailuku...:)

Rolls Royce all the way !

Was the L1011 better designed than the DC-10?
jmkpns 3 years ago
Dunno. The only main difference is the L-1011's 2nd engine is mounted in an S-duct and L-1011s had Rolls Royce engines and DC-10s had GEs
mycah808 3 years ago
They were both nice aircraft, too bad to see them go. Delta should have gotten rid of the MD-88s instead of the 1011.
jmkpns 3 years ago
yeah I agree but for some reason Delta wanted to get rid of all its trijets.
mycah808 3 years ago
the trijet design had become outdated and expensive to maintain. same reason AA and UA got rid of their DC-10s

Thats may as well be music

Just listen to the whine and roar of those engines! The L-1011 is an awesome plan!

What a awesome sound, I never flew in one L-1011, I´d like to do it. I thing the L-1011 is one of the safiest planes never built.

Excellent, love the sound of the L-1011-1/100. Nothing beats the spool up sound of the RB211-22b, that deep moo sound is unreplicable!
loaferguy73 5 years ago
totally agree, u cant get that distinct sound anywhere else...seems like Delta's fleet of L1011 only had it.

Excellent! I flew an ATA Tri-Star from MAN to MCO via Gander in 2000. It was awesome, an excellent airliner!
