McCarthy wanted to end the war in Vietnam, but that wasn't popular with the Establishment (whoever they were) There were a lot of McCarthy supporters at the Convention and they had demonstrations (mostly peaceful) and the Chicago cops rioted and busted everyone's head. A lot of people were pissed off and didn't vote or voted for Nixon (who BTW wasn't nearly as bad as Bush.)So I guess the Est. learned not to let someone who is truly popular with the people get a foothold.

Yes, we have to remember that the CFR was really pushing for Bush to be the nominee in 1980. Reagan started as a long-shot, but turned it around. He specifically stated that he would shun the CFR, but the pressure from the Republican high command to get Bush on Reagan's ticket was insurmountable.
