@leajerokerica I think that, spooky feeling, is something alot of us get listening to this, your right on. Deep bass, Archtyepal lyrics. Its almost meditative.
This song reminds me of a time when I was a teenager I was camping on top of my mountain tripping on acid and some power transformers blew up and the sky flashed bright with a bang. The power company came up in big trucks with a spot light and chain saws. I went back down to the house and a bunch of people came over but the power stayed off. It seemed apocalyptic. Glad those days are behind me.
When I listen to this song it makes me think of Navy Seals in their rubber rafts paddling against the surf in the freezing cold at night with just their battle fatigues and caps. And Marines going on shore storming a beach getting shredded apart hauling ass and closing in on the enemy and gutting them with their KA-BARS and stomping their brains out. And Army rangers storming the Kremlin in Moscow and slaughtering everyone inside. And 10000 spartans charging 30000 persians turning them into steak
@masterphineas it not about a nuke. Chris wrote the song when they were on a tour on Asia (i think), where he got high on LSD and there were fireworks going off in the sky. So the effects of the drug made him think it was the end, or the 4th of July. So its basically, the effects that fireworks have on you when youre high.
But i think that the magic in this song is how you can interpret it in so many ways. A nuke would also make sense.
this song is of a handful that can clearly soothe the storm in my head. it explains it and i connect to this song in a way thats unexplainable. the lyrics mean one thing, but the instruments and music mean something entirely its own.
I had an experience once at a Pink Floyd show in Madison, Wi July 4th 1994....(or 95?) where I felt like all the shit he is singing about was happening to me...fire, explosions, bad trips, insanity, weird vibes........anyways...love this song!
Chris Cornell explained the song in an interview with RIP magazine, April 1994: "One time I was on acid, and there were voices ten feet behind my head.
@fauxpasmusictube Grunge was not a marketing gimmick. Grunge was more of an attitude than a type of music. Soundgarden put forward an edge to the music we call "Grunge."
i use to think about this song the whole time i went through Marine Corps boot camp Dont know why..........I guess I thought the songs about loving your country even when you have to kill to protect it
I always took this song as a call to self determination. Having everything stripped away like shelter and warmth and burying your expectations like Jesus under clouds of dust. This song. this album really, made me want to stand up after feeling so disconnected and trampled for so long during childhood.
It's a powerful artistic statement to say the least.
Thanks combo360 for the post! Gloconti, I like your observations, it gives me a fresh perspective on this song. Well said and thanks for sharing. I love this song too! I think it can apply to end of anything precious to you - relationship, lifestyle, control, the earth, peace. Powerful song, very moody/dark (yet hopeful) maybe often overlooked. Very sublime-- getting depth from an unexpected source.

listen to the over-dubbing vocals at 1:27.
I used to think that he was just singing in falsetto, but after listening to it more closely... It's actually full voice.
I wish they would have made a version of this song where that vocal track is more dominant.

One of THE best songs ever, and for sure THE best band on this little water-covered planet.
Is there anyone else who gets that spooky feeling of power, might or whatever when listening to this song.
