  • brilliant

  • love her when she plays with the people like the cat with the mouse!!!

  • great great so much thanks for sharing bro!

  • brainless, pretentious crap utterly devoid of vocal skills-

  • no

  • Hmmmm I know Patti *Says* she never did drugs (cept for pot here and there.) But I'm not sure if I buy it. Love her all the same.

  • She wanted those people on stage with her. Those bouncers are fucking brutal.

  • blackboard are so nineties.

  • @MrZeroTerrorRide Cool and punk rock back in '96-'97?!? You can't rebel listening to your mom's records, dude. Now if you'd been raving...

  • Funny how this early Rockpalast is getting more and more stuff of legends. If you saw it on german TV back then, you could not help to notice how wasted they were. They had to help Patti Smith getting backstage. Soon after that they tried to interview her, which really wasn't possible. They tried to interview J Geil's Band which was a total failure. In the end Ivan Kral was somehow the only one who managed on camera to send some greetings to his home country. It was just hillarious.

  • Jesus Christ

  • Such a shame this was the year I was born. To have been able to experience a concert of this magnitude would've been truly amazing. We just don't have groups this amazing anymore. Patti Smith is a one of a kind marvel.

  • i waved at the Pope I said jesus died for somebodys sins but not mine...i waved at the Pope

  • Love how she exits the stage leaving the microphone on the floor... Just plain cool... She works herself and anyone watching into a hypnotic groove that's just pure longing fist pumpin gyration - that's how it feels... You wanna shout , 'Say it honey!' G-L-O-R-I-A... !

  • Oh how hot is this Woman - just furious

  • i cannot take the level of power this woman eminates!

  • @suzannbarker So well, so right!

  • I seriously watch this every day. It's fucking amazing and hipnotic. The G-L-O-R-I-A sequence gives me goosebumps every time. Patti rules us all.

  • one of my first an fucking believelabe concerts with 19 fucking years old in fucked german mindfuckcountry she is nj girl and fucking rules a ok

  • Jesus Christ! What a performance, she seriously rocks

  • I have news for you. There are others like her out there. But we will never hear those ladies. If Patti Smith were to come out today, 2011; the media, audiences, everyone, would call her ugly, strange, and completely reject her. She's a woman that doesn't look or sound like an American Idol winner. So she would completely go unnoticed.

  • This is rock'n roll.

  • I have been a fan for a long ok, a long time. She is the goddess of punk... So raw, so honest...

  • you dont want my trousers to fall down well do ya?

  • No one died for somebody sins...Jesus maybe was a special person ...und die Wurzeln der Psychologie greifen tief...

  • Somewhare else this is man !

  • fuck , i just love the headbanger guy in the front ... i t seems the man is in a cannibal corspse gig LOLL

  • yeah! who the fuck disliked this video!

  • her idol was Rimbeau

  • un vuelo total...

  • back in '96-'97 when i thought i was so cool and punk rock i would write "jesus died for somebody's sins but not mine" on the blackboard just to piss people off.

  • @MrZeroTerrorRide it would have been cooler if you had written that Satan had died for them instead.....

  • THANK YOU FOR THIS! FANTASTIC!

  • Is this Keith Richards in drag??

  • Thanks! Best performance ae Gloria a' hiv seen. :-)

  • Brilliant cover, Strange saying cover she really made this her own me thinks :)

  • Will it ever get this good again ?

  • @vintagezigg Really aged well, this.

  • anybody else notice the dude intensely headbanging?

  • I had the privilege of seeing Patti Smith live at the Troubadour in LA many many years ago. I'll never forget her rendition of this fabulous song. She is the BEST!

  • ..The sentence "Jesus died for somebody's sins but not mine " is from Velvet Undergroundf's Heroin ,Lou Reed wrote that song ...

  • @Morphineey maybe so but id have to disagree with it. he died for all sins.

  • @Morphineey Are you on heroin yourself? Those lyrics aren't in that song, man.

  • @LaurensDogg I am on your mother ,of course that line is from VU's Heroin ,biatch !!!!

  • she is god...

  • Patti Smith Forever

  • Long Live Van Morrison!

  • This performance really pushes forward the impression that she is like Jim Morrison. Great to watch as much as he was

  • @monkeybot666 yeah I have allways felt she and jim had alot in common

  • Was the guy with the glasses attacking her or did she pull him on stage?

  • I was looking for the Van Morrison version and got the pseudo-poetic nonsense. The original is rock and roll, this is self-infatuation.

  • @riethc thanks, your input was invaluable. if you have any more sage words of "Gloria"-based wisdom to disseminate, do not hesitate to post them here. i'm atingle with anticipatory delight at the thought of your musical omnipotence ushering forth a new period of artistic enlightenment. douche.

  • @velvet1965 lol, I'll enlighten you a little and see if it sticks.

The whole beginnning is about how Patti rejects Christ because woman lost their maidenhead ("the seam") to man in the Garden of Eden. Then it goes on to show the supposed other side of the original Gloria from the persepctive of the woman who Van has sex with in the song.

This would all be well and good as long as she didn't throw Jesus into the mix, for some reason she blames him for Gloria's supposedly bad sexual encounter.

  • @riethc I think the beginning is more about her censuring Christ in a way for not intervening in human issues "he's the one who disabled these veterans"; it's very interesting what she is saying. Your idea about the Garden of Eden doesn't really make sense because Jesus has nothing to do with that...though you do have a point. Patti does seem slightly "out of it" here, who knows if what she is saying even has any meaning?

Great performance, but yah, she is definitely out of it...

  • @MuchoKiller Granted, Van Morrison probably shouldn't have used the Latin word "Gloria" as a metaphor for orgasm but turning it into a rant about Jesus is not just a stretch but a smear.

If you want to hear another similar type song, check out Leonard Cohen/Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah. That's straight-up using a religious word as a metaphor for orgasm.

  • Comment removed

  • @velvet1965 Sorry, not "seam" but "hem".

  • @velvet1965 That's if you really break it down. There are plenty of "Did she really just say that?" moments.

5:55 "I just want to inseminate you"

1:58 "The men are the thieves"

5:33 "I ate, I ate, I ain't you. I couldn't go in... let me in, let me in..."

I doubt many people even understand what she is saying most the time. They'll listen to her songs over and over again with an uncritical ear and even before they know what she is really attacking, they'll have it stuck in their heads.

  • This woman is just incredible.

  • Glorious!

  • great....GREETINGS FROM ITALY

  • Best version ever!!!!!!

  • what a fucking badass.

  • IF PATTI AND JIM SANG THAT SONG TOGETHER

  • This woman taught me the real mening of art. Thank you Patti!!

  • @carlich54

    share knowledge with us..

  • Her first 3 albums were classics - listened to them over & over & over!!!!!!!!!! She was in a league by herself - pre punk - she rocked!!!!!!! Saw her in a college gym in Glassboro, New Jersey, where we stood right with her - feet away!!!!!!!!

  • WOW ...

... can anyone tell me what was with all that commotion at the end and why was she tugging that man from the crowd ??? o.o??

  • @arealOpia1991 yeah, I thought maybe he hit her or something by accident, but he was on stage for 5 seconds then she's trying to drag him back on haha

  • @bhoussock thanks for ur insight x) ... Patti's incredible !!! x)))

  • @arealOpia1991 looks to me like she was trying to say "no no it's ok stay on stage & dance with me" as he got scared of the security..

  • Before willow 'whip my hair ' smith came that headbanging guy at the front of the crowd. Was he spazzing out or what?

  • that is one bad-ass bitch!!

  • LEGEND...........!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I love you, Patti.

You help me be strong enough for this world

  • I saw her 3 times and liked them all. This is better, though.

  • amazing!

  • She's mint but, she does look at bit like a man here

  • I don't know you guys but i think Patti was sexy

  • A fucking legend is Patti Smith!

  • patti smith made me want to be a punk rock singer in a band --

  • Patti Smith <3 ,,, 'Nuff said.

  • My heroine of the 70's!

  • She is AMAZING!!!!!

And without drugs!!!!! She don't need it, because she IS too much

  • She's out of her fucking mind. And I love it.

  • Why is everyone arguing about religion here? LOOK AT PATTI SMITHS EYES. you can see the emptiness of the universe in them; there is no god.

  • Religion ist a worldwide killer.

Jesus was nothing more than a human being who eventually was mental ill.

God son ??? The "son" of a carpenter and an underaged girl, who was pregnant from another man and was telling stories about an "angel" to save her live.

In those times she would have been expected a stoning.

Jesus died only for ... himself.

  • @faltenelli Woah! Pop analysis much? Who gives a fuck whether it's true? It's probably not, but people believe in it, which makes it much more than a "lie". Mentally ill? that's as unfounded as the religion you so scorn.

No I am not christian, I just hate closed minded people.

  • I have loved her music for the last 30 year's. She brings back memories for me. Good memories!

  • I have ALWAYS LOVED PATTI SMITH, but now that I am older and wiser, I NOW KNOW THAT JESUS DID DIE FOR HER SINS, AND EVEYBODY ELSES TOO!

    rduquet

  • @rduquet actually, in the world of free thinkers, you have the freedom to deny certain religions. don't be such a typical old rocker turned christian. you're boring me.

  • @connorwood83 Christians are free thinkers as well. We freely focus on Christ. You freely dont. Dont say we aren't free thinkers. If anything we think more freely than anyone, because in order to have faith you have to have faith challenged which makes you think alot more about so much more than many people think. So don't be such a typical Atheist disliking Christians until you understand us. Sorry if I misinterpret what your saying, but I read this and I saw it has a dislike against Christians

  • @rem857 i respect people of all faiths, and all people of no faiths, but please, don't flatter yourself

  • @rduquet you know this was just a cover song and it has a punk idea of only three chords and Patti Smith heard where she could do some poetry. I don't think they did it as a statement, just as a song.

  • ¡Cómo me emociono oyendo esta canción! Patti, la mejor!

  • who the fuck disliked this video?

  • @skymotel Possibly some raised and unsure christians who didn't understand which Jesus she's talking about.

  • @skymotel haters i guess?

  • So fuckin great!!!

  • THE GODMOTHER OF PUNK

  • Jesus died for somebody sins ...not mine!!!!!!

    Grandissima Patti!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Love dancing around to this song like a crazed maniac...NEVER GETS OLD..probably not even when I'm 80 years old!

  • @TheTosh00 he gringo!!!

at my 50, I still dance like a possesed with patti smith, have a miriade of young friends -family and not- who like to share fernet and joints with me.

I will not be old, will just be death.

  • Jesus died for somebody's sins but not mine;-)

  • PATTI SMITH - THE QUEEN OF PUNK!!!

  • if all the pretzel farmers were as cool as you, the world would be a better place. Patti is blinking amazing, poet performer musician you name it.

  • she is prolly my favorite female rock and roll singer of all time.

  • Patti's the best poet I've ever heard. She bends words to the beat so they fit her meaning; she effortlessly carries me into her emotions. She replaces reality with her thoughts.

And she rocks. I mean, she really rocks. I stain my pants thinking of her.

  • Wow, the best live performance ever.

  • She was pulling him back on stage. Then the bouncers got involved for some reason. Look at her face she's like wtf?

  • The punkiest song ever without been a punk song. ---- ALL THE WORLD IS RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR ME ---- That's attitude!!!

  • Gesu' e' morto per i peccati di qualcuno, ma non per i miei.....and I just get not bored.... grande patti..

  • I love this woman. As a female poet, she really ispires me to be myself and un apologetic about the way I'm portrayed as a strong woman. So many times I feel like strong women are really thrown aside but Smith never allowed herself to be pushed aside.

  • @Ritzhefreak Yes.

  • Глория ... Глория ... Глория !!!!!

панк в 79 году мог получить своё возрождение .... если бы Патти Смит не распустила бы свою группу ....

  • Oh i would like to see you some morning. I would like to talk this over very sincere. maybe we could meet in this life or after, but until that time I'm tabling him, he is the one who disabled these veterans, veterans of pushing through an extra hymm?

  • There was only one layer over in the garden, I don't know when , we'll get there again, but for now this is my answer, for I must accept the truth, but then again, is this answer forever or is it just one simple question in the quest from my youth???

  • Any MP3 of this??

  • Does anyone have the lyrics to this performance, with the slow lyrics at the beginning??

  • I can't understand what she does at 8:55, is she giving the boy to the police?

  • I still got her first 2 lp's...loved Easter....way ahead of anyone else...

  • 8:44 que colita mami

  • that guy in the front row banging his head in each clip is awesome. PAtti is fuking amazing and yes jesus died for somebodies sins but not mine is the greatest lyric of all time.

  • thanks for uploading.

  • Too bad rock has always been mostly dominated by men, cause GIRLS KICK ASS!!!

  • Her voice is still great, all the shit she sang in the seventies, she can still do, now that's badass.

  • does anyone have an MP3 of this???

  • Oh yeah. I remember this so well. It's 1979, and you can stick this up your pipe organ, Emerson Lake and Palmer.... sincerely, SOHO, Manhattan, New York....

  • he wants you to stop having buttsex with your chihuahua too skin....perv

  • what patti powerfully understands is that a jesus wanted nobody to die for him again. thanx patti.

  • jesus died for somebodys sins but not mine

  • WOW! Always loved her music but never saw her perform live. Thanks for posting.

  • then i go to this here party, and i just get bored...until i see a sweet little thing, moving on parking meter.

  • Great one! Thanks for the post.

  • I'm amazed, her presence is so real. her performance is beyond what any rock and roll artist does these days.

  • @Narutorule1qaz fantasticly intense ......legend , no question

  • Godness

  • Wow! I've never seen this version before. Amazing. Thanks for posting.

  • tony, that was live in 1979 on ARD (first channel German state TV). We went nuts, and i saw her already half a year before in Düsseldorf-Philipshalle. There`s a rock´n´roll-nigger -version from Frankfurt-Jahrhunderthalle (June 2009). She hardly looks as if she´s aged and she´s 59 now!!!!
