  • Thanks

  • wow ...love it ...i actually know this steps ....but i really want to learn new things coz im kind bored of the old things

    love your vedeo

    2222 nice

  • For your Kingston cap video, when you first make the chain and then do the double crochet, do you skip to the fourth chain then too?

  • I love that you slow your videos down. It make it much easier and faster to grasp what you're doing.

  • @MissNayNay Thank you.

  • Hi Teresa, I am very new to crocheting and I was wondering, I only have one hook. What is the difference in hooks, and how important is it to have more than one. I love how you show how to do it and then you do it in slow mo. Thanks for your help and time :) Vicki

  • @TheVivs3 Hi Vicki - A different size hook will result in a different size project. Even when you have the same size, there is always the possibility that you will have a different end result. You can always modify to make your project larger or smaller by working more or less increase rounds. With projects like hats, most likely you will end up with a smaller hat with a smaller hook.

  • @tjw1963 So the larger the hook the larger the holes say on a scarf?? Im using a I/9 on my scarf.

  • @TheVivs3 Yes, if you have a larger hook, the holes will be larger. That may work well for a scarf or even hat but it may not work well for a stuffed animal. With the larger holes, the stuffing will show and possibly fall out.

  • Hi Teresa~

Question 2: Am I correct to say that you are working in the top stitch of the V when working the chain but both of the top V stitches after working the chain? So I don't have to worry about going through the middle of the V and below the bump?

  • @TXTalker69 I am going below the two loops at the top of the stitch. Many people call this the V.

  • Hi Teresa~

I have made several afghans in years past and I am attempting to make another one but have forgotten several things. Also this pattern is making pinwheel motifs then assembling them. I have never done pinwheel motifs.... but my questions are: 1. the book that I had learned from showed working the chain and other stitiches as going through the top of the "V" and below the "Bump" in the back of the stitches. I see that you are showing working the chain as only going through the top V.

  • hi I really love your video, and I am a beginner so I have a problem to ask for your help. My stitches don't stand upright, they tend to lean to the left. Could you help me to solve this? Thank you very much

  • How do I do this double crochet so I do not wind up with holes at the end of each row?

    Thanks.

  • Neat.

  • Thanks Teresa! I tried learning from other videos and gave up. I came back to it on Monday, watched your video and I just finished my first hat and it's only Wednesday. Your video was really clear and easy to understand, thanks for taking the time to make it.

  • hello Teresa

i was just wondering , whenever i look at the crochet pattens on the internet in always says that ... in US they call the "Double crochet" " single crochet "

what do they mean,.. and what's the difference exactly

    thank you very much

  • @xxMyBloodyMindxx You are probably talking about the UK standards. I believe they refer to the double crochet as a single crochet but I am not sure. I have never learned the UK standards.

  • @tjw1963 Does that mean that you're using US standards in crocheting ?

  • @xxMyBloodyMindxx I am using US standards.

  • @tjw1963 the matter is that am making an adult Mary Jane slipper and these standards are confusing me .. because i have learned all my basics from you ,

  • @xxMyBloodyMindxx You would need to find a conversion chart for US- UK standards. You should be able to Google it.

  • @tjw1963 thank you so much

  • There is a big hole in my stitch.

  • @TheSilentOneHere You may have holes when you are first start out. That is related to tension. Continue practicing and your stitches will be more even.

  • I love how you take the tim to actually show which chains you go through. And that you really explain which chains to skip, I tried reading diagrams and about cried because it was so difficult to understand. ^^ Thank you!

  • @TarebearsCrochet I am glad that you did not give up. Thank you!

  • I really liked that you slowed it down to really show us what you were doing.

  • @happinie93 Thank you!

  • is it always a chain 3 when double crocheting? I always thought it was chain 2.What I love about your videos is the very detailed and slow motion of the instruction. Making it impossible not to learn it :-) THANK YOU Teresa

    peggy

  • @pegschr It can be a chain 3 or chain 2. This first stitch is flexible. If you use to many chains, it may look sloppy and loose. Many times I will use a long chain 1 and work a full double crochet for the first stitch to eliminate the chain.

  • Teresa, I have really enjoyed your videos. I am making a baby blanket and understand how to do all the stitches and how to do the turning chain. The only place that I am not clear is at the end of the row with the last double crochet is exactly where you are inserting the hook in the last double crochet in the lower row or where you are inserting the hook in the chain three, which was the first double crochet in the lower row. Can you explain it in further detail. Thank you. RYoung370

  • I love your videos! There so easy to follow and you have tought me mostly everything i know how to do. Some stiches i can do, my mom cant even do! I just wanted to thank you (:

  • @TheCookiemonsterking It is wonderful to hear about your success with crochet! Keep up the good work!!

  • Somewhere you mentioned that there are alternatives to doing the chain-3 step up for a double crochet turn. Do you have any videos of the alternatives?

  • i love to crochet and this shows me how to do stuff that i cant i loveeee this

  • I searched forever to find you doing knitting tutorials......I couldn't find any. I love the crochet ones and they are nice and slow and show really well in your light. Do you teach knitting too? Thanks so much for your help!

  • @Mel45325 I never did learn how to knit

  • thank you

  • hi, i love your videos and have learned so much from them!! do you have a video showing how to make an adult poncho? thank you so much!

  • @missO153 You are welcome!

  • Hi! Thanks so much for taking the time to post all of these tutorials. I am a beginner. I am working on a scarf with the double crochet stitch. Would like to know if it is ok to use a 6.50 mm needle with #4 worsted medium yarn. I hope I am giving you the right information. Thanks again!

  • @levendisa1 You can use a larger hook with 4 ply yarn. Keep in mind it will give your scarf a lighter look with looser stitches. If that is what you are looking for it will be perfect.

  • this was so simple..thanks..

  • @nelly25able You are welcome!

  • oh my gosh THANKS!! one question.. is single crochet doing it once, and double crochet doing it twice? i guess i might have to look back at this video everytime im trying to do something haha

  • @ItzAllPeachy Everyone has a different level at where they start. I did not get everything right at first when I was learning. My stitches were crooked and my afghan had big holes in it. One end was wider than the other. Keep practicing and it will all fall in to place. There is a lot of different techniques but you do not have to learn them all at once. I am going to send you some new video content that may help you a little better.

  • The explanations followed by the slow motion are really helpful. Thanks a lot! :-)

  • @chtitmog You are welcome!

  • The explanations followed by the slow motion is really helpful. Thanks a lot! :-)

  • Thank you Teresa for all your easy to follow, instructional videos. You've inspired me to try more complicated patterns!

  • @MsBonSaint I appreciate the comment, thank you!

  • Hi Teresa, thanks for all you've done to create a great learning tool for crocheting!! In regards to your post on your blog describing "reducing or avoiding holes", can you please link to that post?? I keep trying to find it and am unable to. Thanks again:)

  • @tasly Also, I really need HELP on the turning of rows...it seems like no matter what I do I end up with one less double crochet than the previous row (ie: I start with 22 chain, get 20 dc, then the next rows are 19, 18, 17, etc) This has been SOOO frustrating!

Any idea where I could be going wrong??

  • this is a great video! thank you!

im doing something wrong but i dont know what.

sometimes my work gets bigger and then smaller its like whenever i turn it, i either increase or decrease. also i get these rounded turns when i chain 3 :-( help please

  • Hello! Thank you for your great videos. I have a question.

In this video you show to skip 3 chains and insert the hook into the 4th chain. Then you make 3 chains to turn your work.

However ,there's another video of yours, (where you use an orange yarn) about the double crochet and you teach a different method: you skip only 2 chains and insert your hook into the 3rd one. Then, when you turn your work, you make only 2 chains. So which is the correct method? Thank you

  • YouTube does not let me copy here the link of that video of yours, but it was called "How to double crochet", dated December 20th, 2006

  • @Dropstar2 There is not just one correct way. There are many correct ways for the step up. Once you crochet more and start making projects, you will find that the traditional taught chain tends to leave gaps and holes in the side of your work and in the middle of hats. I teach the chain because it is a common technique. I like to provide alternatives as well.

  • @tjw1963 Im so glad you mentioned this. I have been searching for an answer to why I have "holes" on the sides of my work. Can lead me to the video that shows the method to avoid this please????

  • @tjw1963 Im so glad you mentioned this. I have been searching for an answer to why I have "holes" on the sides of my work. Can lead me to the video that shows the method to avoid this please????

  • @cankke I have a blog post that describes how to reduce or avoid holes.

  • Thank you for making this video, this made it sooo much easier then other videos!! you're my hero :D

  • WOW!!! thanks a bunch!!!!

    Keep doing what ur doing!!!

  • @jojo421266 You are welcome.

  • I decided to start crocheting again and I have forgotten some of the terms and abbreviations. I have started a hat (something I have never attempted) and do not know exactly what they want. The directions say: Ch3, PST in joining, ch 1 [PST, dc in sp, dc in PST, 2 dc in sp] 7 times, dc in PST, dc in sp, dc in PST, 2 dc in top of ch-3; turn -42 sts. I understand Ch- chain PST? I have no idea maybe pattern stitch? Dc- double crochet Sp- space Ch-3? Decrease 3 Thank you, Vicki
  • @muziklvr316 I have a large list on my crochet blog with the common abbreviations. I am wondering if it is a post stitch. Each person that writes a pattern may come up with an abbreviation that may be the same as the traditional abbreviations or somewhat different.

  • U are the best crochet teacher ive ever had... thanks a lot, im left hand , its has been very difficult for me to understan other people, but u rocks!!

  • how many chains exactly are you skipping??

  • @lovelykali 3 chains.

  • You said it it best to pull through through both top loops. When I yarn over do I go through both loops too?

    You are awesome!

    Thanks a million!

  • @catlynn1964 Yes, I go through both. There may be times that you would only go through the front or the back loop depending on the pattern. Going through both is the most secure.

  • So I understand this correctly, I would only work the top loop to avoid the ridge right?

Thanks so much for helping me! I am learning on my own with videos and your's are the best!

  • when doing a blanket do i continue this all the way!!

  • @Hope1981ful To make a blanket, you will make a long chain. Then you continue working double crochet on each row to make it to the length you are looking for.

  • @tjw1963 Thank you so much i already stared the chain so i will follow this and i hope that it turns out good. I will let you know!

  • I love your videos! I have a question though.......when I begin my next row of DC I wind up with a line running between each row. Is there any way to avoid this line? It really doesn't look attractive!

    Thanks for your help!

    Cathy

  • @catlynn1964 @catlynn1964 If you are working through one loop at the top of the stitch, you will end up with a line on each side. It is preference with how many loops you work through at the top of the stitches as well as design elements. I will send you the link to a video talking about front loop and back loop only. Most of the time I go through both loops at the top of the stitch because it looks nicer.

  • @tjw1963 Could you please send me the link to the video again? I cannot find it.

    Thank you so much!

    Cathy

  • @tjw1963 Could you please send me the link you are referring to? I am unable to find it. Please email the link if possible. clb1964@dejazzd.com

    Thanks so much

    Cathy

  • Thank you so much for your great videos! They are so great! They have helped me so much!

  • Oh Theresa, you are the first person that I have seen that feeds their yarn as I do. Most crocheters and books show the middle finger elevated higher to so the hook fits under the yarn. Now I do not feel so lonely

  • @filostas I never could accomplish anything when I tried to use the traditional book method. For years I thought I was doing it wrong because of how I held my work. After I while I figured out that it does not matter how you hold your work, as long as it is comfortable for you.

  • awwwww. now i gotta do it all again.....

  • um, excuse me, but whenever i do the double crochet, like you showed how to here, the whole thing starts curving in. isnt it supposed to stay straight? like, it curvel like a U, sort of. but like a big one. help?

  • @cypresslyvernia You may be missing some stitches or crocheting to tight.

  • I think I could do this one.. I read a book and it said just skip one chain. But you have missed more than one chain and I think it looks easier, I just ended up in a tight knot with missing one chain.

  • thank you so much for up loading theses videos.. after all these years off wanting to learn how to crochet.. i have finally done it from watching your detailed instruction's... it beat's a leaflet manuel anyday..!!

  • I should have started by telling you how much I have learned from your videos.Sorry:) I just want to know if my pattern says start in second chain stitch is that what I do? I understand your video is teaching double crochet so I guess I am wondering to do a DC does it matter what chain you start in?

  • @N2Nursing4Life If you are starting in the second chain from the hook, that sounds like a single crochet.

  • can someone tell me my pattern says to go into the 2 second stitch after chaining 17? Watching this has me a little confused.

  • how come my one comes out as a circular shape whereas your one is a rectangular shape :( and also when you double crochet, where are you supposed to put the needle through? i know the first double crochet is the 4th stitch.. but how about the second? :( thank you :)

  • @starrygleam I do not know why you would be getting a circle. What I can tell you is that your stitches will be a variety of sizes when you are first learning to crochet. When you practice, you stitches become more consistent and the same in size.

  • okay, im in high school, and my class (fashion) it was so hard trying to figure it out but you made it so much easier!

    thank-you!!

    (:

  • You are welcome. :)

  • Awesome video! Very clear.I have a question though. When I was making the Slip Stitch, It was always at the ends going up to a triangle shape; not a square:[. Why does this happen and how can I fix it? Thanks:]]

  • I love your video. I have a question. Some videos show skipping TWO chains when you turn on double crochet and you skip THREE. Three leaves a bigger hole at end---what do I do?

  • Im a beginner... i wanted to try a new hobby and you have helped me so much. Im making a scarf and its coming along nicely

  • I'm a new grandmother, I want to make a baby blanket for my granddaughter but I don't know how to go about it, I would really appreciate it if you could post a video on how to make a simple baby blanket.

  • Theresa, Thanks so much for this video, your instruction was so vauleable to me, I have never crocheted before and u just taught me how to double crochet a scarf..your video was the best one out there for me to learn from, the others were too fast and Im a slow learner. Thanks so much...

  • You are welcome. I appreciate the comment.

  • Hi Stacey (& Doodlebug). I agree! I don't know how many times I've tried to learn to crochet, but I've never managed. I can't connect instructions or diagrams to what happens when I'm trying to co-ordinate yarn and hook; and I get nervous when anyone shows me - fumble fumble oops nyaargh!!! Now I've got a good basic book: GETTING STARTED crochet by Judith L. Swartz, my inspiring friend at my local knitting and crochet group, and Theresa in slow motion with Replay button. Progress at last. =)

  • Hello Theresa,

I stumbled upon your videos just now, and want to say a big thank you. I haven't picked picked up my hooks since just before my son was birn - that was July 1974. LOL

May I ask you, please, do you use very thin yarn or a pretty thread, and if so, have you ever considered designing for larger fashion dolls, please?

I would LOVE to re-learn how to crochet. I was thinking maybe if I did something as that, I might actually finish it. ^_^

Will you teach us how to do this, please?

  • I just wanted to say thank-you for this video. I found it to be extreemly helpful on teaching the dc. I dont learn well by reading and only by seeing something done do I understand, so this video was very helpful! Thanks again and great job!

  • I appreciate the comment, thank you.

  • I'm Italian and not speak English, I use the Google translator, forgive the mistakes. I'm good at knitting and crochet, work for many years, but since humans can not know everything, you and your videos I have learned new techniques and methods, many thanks and best wishes for a wonderful new year

  • that's pretty good english!!!!

  • Apprezzo il commento, Grazie. Vi auguro un felice anno nuovo

I appreciate the comment, thank you. I wish you a Happy New Year.

    .

  • THANK YOU!!!! my book waz like really confusing to understand but now i can crochet a double crochet !!!!

  • You are welcome. :)

  • First of all I want to thank you for such an informative video. My problem is that i have about 12 rows done and i am noticing that it is going up in a diagonal on the sides. Seems i am adding stiches or something. I chain 3 turn and go into the 4th stitch, but i think my counting is wrong do i count from the chain that is on my hook? Plus at the end of a row i am going into the "chain 3" part and creating a stitch from that. I know im doing something wrong. Please help

  • I new to this but I think I know what has happened. The skip 4 stiches is only on the chain, the very first time you flip your work.

After you have completed your first row of "crochets" you will not need to skip any more. Watch the video again, and see if this helps.

  • The chain 3 will count as the first double crochet. You will not put a double crochet in the chain at the beginning of the row. What you do is work the double crochet in the next stitch. Count your stitches as you are working the row so you know your count is accurate. That should eliminate the diagonal.

  • Thank you. Do you also have a video on how to tie in the ends when changing colors on a blanket or just tying in the ends. For years and years i just knot and weave in but little ends pop out and it looks ugly...i dont know what else to try. Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me

  • hello, i am 11 years old and i am trying to make a scarf for my mom for christmas. But i need some help. First of all why do u have to skip stitches? Someone told me u don't have to. Please help me!

  • Skipping stitches will depend on the pattern and stitch that you are using. If you are making a scarf out of single crochet, you will not skip any stitches.

  • i was thinking of doing a double crochet scarf

  • about done with mine. Let me tell you the freakin easiest thing ever!

  • es la perimera vez que tomo una aguaja para crochet... y ya aperndi a hacer 2 puntos!!!! gracias!!!!

  • No hay de qué.

  • hello, i made the beanie you provided and now i want to add ear cover flaps with little fuzz balls hanging down how do i make flaps ? thanks

  • Thank you so much for your videos.I am teaching myself to crochet, but I keep having problems with the turning chain. With the help of your video I am hoping to figure out what the problem is.

  • after you finished making a hat or something how do you add colour? do you embroid it in?

Ty fir all your videos my 12 yer old son watched them and taught me to crochet

  • You can change color each round or you can embroider in color.

  • how do i do my 3rd line. i am on it now

  • The same way you did the second.

  • Comment removed

  • in the pattern I'm following it's talking about two loops.. but i don't know what two loops it's talking about... first the pattern told me to

Round 2: ch 2, (move stitch marker up with each row) 1dc in same st , *1 dc in back loops only of next stitch*, repeat * around, Join with sl st to 1st st.

    and now it says..

Round 3: ch 2, (in both loops) 1 dc in same st, *1 dc in next st repeat around*, Join with sl st to 1st st.

I don't understand what it means by (in both loops) ?

  • There are two loops at the top of each stitch. That is what it is talking about. I will send you a video showing what the loops are.

  • me 2

  • omg thank u so much for putting these videos up... i used to do this in middle school...i was going threw some old stuff and for all my old stuff and wanted to start again and ur videos helped me...ur a life saver!!!

  • You are welcome. :)

  • hello well I use a 6.50 mm hook but i get small works out of that! maybe do i need to get a bigger hook? to get bigger results? maybe other yarn?

  • It helped me too!!! Thanx D:)

    I can do it tight.

I made a blanket and it's almost five feet now. But, how d'you add other colors?

  • I sent you a message with a video attached.

  • Wow you make it look so easy thanks a ton! The slo mo really helped as well =)

  • I appreciate the comment, thank you. :)

  • Thank you for posting these! This helped me out a ton!

  • You are welcome. :)

  • You are welcome.

  • i cant here nutin

  • Do you have your speakers on?

  • that's funny =)) haha anyways... i love your vids they're very helpful!!! totally inspired me to start crocheting ... thanks Teresa...

  • You are welcome. :)

  • i think that there needs to be a little bit of music. it is a little too quiet with the slow motion.

  • Use of music violates copyright laws and the video's are subject for removal if there is a copyright match up. The channel will be permanently suspended with repeat violations. I am not willing to take that chance. Two years ago I had music in some video's. I had to remove the video's and re-edit them.

  • The slow-mo really helps a lot, thanks!

  • Thank you. I appreciate your comment.

  • I was always taught this stitch is called a treble stitch and not a double. Maybe you do it differently in America.( I am from UK)

  • In America it is called the double crochet.

  • It's really easy to see how the stitches should go in this video. Thanks!

  • You are welcome. :)

  • Hey, in the first beginning part, how many chains do you skip? 3? And into the fourth?

    :]

  • You will double crochet in the 3rd chain from the hook. You are skipping 2 and crocheting in the 3rd. If you do more than that, it will leave a big hole.

I apologize for the delay in the response.

  • hello, I have one small question. I'm a beginner at this and i'm having difficulty towards the beginning . Any suggestions.

  • What is the difficulty you are having?

  • Thanks so much for your tutorial :)

  • You are welcome. :)

  • Thank you for great help!

  • You are welcome. :)

  • WOW! THANKS!

  • thanks so much! i was having so much trouble learning to get past the first row until this video! haha :D

  • You are welcome. :)

  • Thank you so so much. Thats really all I can say...

  • You are welcome. :)

  • Hey!

Do you have a video of double crocheting after you made a ring? (the beginning of a hat)

I searched but couldn't find anything...

    Thanks!

  • thank you for your video! i was able to have my "ah ha' moment with double crocheting!

  • You are welcome. I am happy to hear it is making sense now.

  • Dear Teresa,

Thank you very much for taking the time to record and post your lessons. It's wonderful how you show each step, then slowly and describe again. I finally understand how to do the double crochet stitch-yeah! I thought I was going to flunk at crochet, step 2.

I appreciate all the time and effort you've taken to teach all of us newbies in cyberspace!

    Mo

  • Thank you very much. :)

  • Thanks for this video! I am learning to crochet strictly from youtube and books and your video really helped me get dc down:)

  • You are welcome. :)

  • thank you for this video!

It looked so confusing but your video quality is so much clearer and easier to understand than other peoples

    Thanks again :D

  • Thank you. :)
