  • McNamara admits that if the Allies had lost the war he and many others would rightfully have faced trial for war crimes. The fire bombing of Japan and Germany would be the most obviously criminal and morally culpable action. That's not even mentioning Hiroshima and Nagasaki, events that will live for all time as symbols of the evil men can do.

Remember, the victors write the histories of war. In reality there was no such thing as "good" America and "bad" Japan.

  • @GamesFrontiers japan started it

  • i totaly just farted in my jocks, and it is trapped in there becuase i wont lift my arse of my chair but i can still smell it wich means it is escaping some how!!!

  • @Benny118811

Ahh i know EXACTLY what you're talking about!

  • I was absolutely blown away by this documentary. People say that he's just being a hypocrite by trying to justify his actions, but I believed him. What does he have to gain from trying yo save his reputation at this point of age. I really think he want's to prevent the future generation of making the same mistake.

  • Macnamara suffers in his old age the remorse of his mistakes on Vietnam, but he was at that time very arrogant, ignorant of the Vietnamese fight against invasion, very much American in his way of thinking as modelled by American Bussiness Schools. Macnamara is culprit, as much as Lyndon Johnson, of all the horror of Vietnam.

  • McNamara's intelligence is astounding even in his late age. I have learned so much from this documentary and I believe that the Library of congress should selected it for preservationt, plus it should be taught in all History classes. One of the many things were:

    1. leaving an $800,000 CEO job for a $25,000 gov't job in the 60s [would you?]

    2. US didn't understand how the Vietnamese viewed it [as oppressors]

    3. The destruction Japan endured...omg...no comment

Our leaders should be wary of war.

  • The thing I hate is that anyone who condemns the mass bombing of German and Japanese cities in World War II is shouted down as a neo nazi revisionist. It has happened to me on several occasions on forums. Just because you condemn certain things as war crimes like the mass fire bombing of Dresden and other German and Japanese cities does not mean that you support those countries regimes!

  • @ParagramTree 1/2

I often have mixed feelings about commenting on the internet at all, because there are nine retards for every sane person it seems. Ofc you can have the view without sympathizing with their ideology.

That being said, I think there is a diffrence between Japan and Germany. Germany had already lade waste to the greater part of Europe, Britain was litterary fighting for its existence, barly keeping the Germans off their shores. In such times I think anything goes.

  • I grew up in the 60's and 70's and fell into the camp that viewed McNamara as the architect of a ridiculous bloodbath. After seeing this film, I have come to have tremendous respect for him. He was thoughtful, introspective, and respected the complexity of situations. I wish more people were like that.

  • I applaud McNamara for telling his life story, obviously he could not reveal the whole truth, he even said so at the end of the movie. "I'm damned if I do and i'm damned if I don't..." "but id rather be damned if I don't"

  • Have you ever been wrong? ptf obviously not

  • It was not Mcanamras war it was Johnson's and Nixon's war McNamara actually was talking to Kennedy about ending it then Johnson came in and Changed Bobs mind, it takes balls to man up to a mistake like this but he did it and I would like to meet him.

  • Great, great movie. It's amazing to get that kind of perspective on Vietnam and the Cold War from the lips of one of the biggest players...

  • We watched this documentary in history class. It's incredibly compelling and a nice change from those stupid history channel movies we usually watch. I personally like getting an opinionated documentary rather than straight up facts, but that's just me.

  • @tubub McNamara is that rarity among national leaders - a man who can admit mistakes.

  • I never questioned the necessity of the US intervention in Vietnam until I saw this documentary. When McNamara has doubts...

  • @JohannMoritz

I still question the necessity of America's intervention, but you do need to recognize that McNamara was an oddball even when he was SecDef. A lot of people thought he should be removed because he was constantly having doubts about the war, and some believed it to be unhealthy for the effort. Obviously he's not singularly responsible for America's mistakes, and his doubts were probably sound, but you still need to understand that he was always a bit of a dissenter.

  • not only one of the greatest documentaries of all time but one of my favorite films, top three on my list

  • A documentary for smart people

  • The blood in American hands in the name of war is so much so that no human beings in this earth has committed such terrible genocide.Generations have been stolen and changed....and it still continues...thousands of McNamara regrets wont bring in change...thousands of warnings from chomskies wont make sense to the Americans...its a culture and civilization that was found upon killing....it will kill and be killed.

  • Fuck this guy. He was an adult back then too. He knew.

  • @MercedesW126Diesel - I (being a veteran myself) know first hand that what McNamara did for me and fellow troops was heroic for all of us. Maybe those who weren't a part of this situation shouldn't make such rude and ignorant judgments.

  • Simply one of the powerful movies of my life!

  • McNamara was a murderous sonofabitch, and his later "regrets" were nothing more than crocodile tears. For you silly cunts who think that McNamara was a kind old man and a hero, ask your grandparents, ask Vietnam War veterans what they thought of this butcher!

  • @MercedesW126Diesel - your right, he's an evil person, i couldn't have said it better myself.

    thank you

  • Dont believe the lies and disinformation on main stream media outlets. Do the research for yourself. Do not be naive or ignorant of the real deciet around you.

  • So proud of watching this , you have to admit that after watching this you so size with Mcnamara...

  • This is a great documentary, but holy crap the director or whoever it was who asked McNamara questions on camera had the most punchable and obnoxious voice.

  • When the children of Presidents offer their lives in war, maybe the truth about who is profiting from the wars will be made a little more public.

  • i would like to know the name of this music

  • @Dodec84 It's called "100,000 People" by Philip Glass. It's on "The Fog of War" soundtrack.

  • The Vietnam Conflict was not a mistake. That former SECDEF is a LIAR.

Vietnam was intentionally partially exterminated and burned to the ground, to prevent independent internal development outside of the enslavement system of the mass murdering Debt Syndicate.

  • I wish McNamara - and indeed all public men kept records which are automatically released to the public upon their death. I never thought this man has really told the full story about anything he has been involved in. There are many such men like him, and he will not be the last. Do not laud him so quickly for his "honesty"... every part of the image of this genius is intricate and considered, and perhaps even revised.

  • although i wish you were wrong....you are absolutely right. fabrications are everywhere my good man.

  • @theprivateer83 Mc Namara was absolutely seeking absolution and conveniently "remembering" some facts and not others. Nonetheless, as twisted as the notion is, he still has something valuable to say. Moreover, it's extraordinarily unlikely - (again remembering how selective Mr. Mc Namara was), we will see such a level of candor and willingness to admit / confront the rather nasty side and mistakes of our hegemony.

  • I want to make a mocumentary called the Frog of War and then play it for Errol.

  • The documentary of the decade!

  • Watch on YouTube:

"The Loss of Liberty" which is about the Israeli attack on the USS Liberty. It will blow your mind. McNamara ordered planes coming to the ship's defense return to their carrier.

  • movies like this are why people stare at me when i say I like documentaries

  • movies like this is why people state at you or why you like documentaries?

  • Wrong,Is that all?

    Does that justify your horror

  • I keep a short list of films and books that I re-watch and re-read every year so that I'm never without the wisdom they offer. This is one of them.

  • Superb documentary

  • fascinating, ty for posting *****

  • When you see a Errol Morris documentary you know your in for something special the guys a genius

  • The Fog Of War is outstanding, a stunning documentry. It's intersting that McNamara says that the higher echelons of the US military were very aware that during the meetings they held to firebomb the Japanese cities, that if they lost the war their actions amounted to crimes aganist humanity. Hilter always said that when Germany won the war that no one would question their methods. It is a very intriguing comparison.

  • Apart from the BBC's natural history documentaries, this is prob the finest documentary I've seen.

  • Just perfect

  • One of the best documentaries I have ever seen.

  • A great history lesson, but an even more interesting portrait of the most haunted human being I have ever seen. I wish everyone would see this movie.

  • Was Macnamara a skull and bones member at Yale?

  • McNamara was a Cal graduate. Go Bears!

  • he didnt go to Yale, he want to Berkley and then Harvard for his masters degree

  • war is hell. What do you expect ya ignorant whitetrash hippy?

  • RIP may your realizations of the past better serve those of the present and the future good sir. If only everyone would watch this film.

  • Bon voyage Mr. M. Scary to imagine what's ahead of you, but if enough Americans see this movie you may just redeem your debt to the millions run through the meat grinder of insanity taken to its hyper-logical conclusion. You had the moral fiber to recognize a very painful truth and tell the story of madness with the unassailable authority of the ultimate insider. We must absorb these lessons, for our own sake if not out of respect for the unfathomable and inexcusable suffering we have created.

  • Best. Comment. Ever.

  • A great man. Sure he made mistakes but he had the strength of character to acknowledge them. I would love to have met him. RIP

  • R.I.P great american

  • Comparing Hitler to McNamara... that is the dumbest fucking thing I have ever heard

  • He's not like Hitler, but he sure knew how to follow orders

  • Exactly. McNamara is like an employee of a company. The ones who truely set the agenda are the majority shareholders, i.e Investment banking companies and oil companies. But they need someone to blame, so they go for McNamara. Or they go for Nixon later on. They never seem to blame the Kissingers and Rothschilds of this world.

  • he was from austria you idiot

  • I scan down the list of comments, reading several interesting points of view, and get to yours. You write: "You idiot."

Could you please refrain from being so judgmental? Just let others voice their comments without resorting to vitriol.

    Thank you.

  • im sick of all the germans are nazis, hitler did that, hitler did this bla bla bla

    im sick of it

    you find this shit everywhere

  • Brilliant doc. We are all fortunate that Robert McNamara was able to share his experiences with us.

  • great documentary, made with much taste and tells a story brilliantly

  • i must have watched this documentary AT LEAST 15 times. . .it never gets old. THESE are the things we should've learned in history class.

And of course the song is beautiful as well!

  • same here mate, seen it plenty of times now - find it fascinating. will have to watch it againt his week now.....

  • amazing documentary.

  • great documentary, just finished watching it.

i recommend it to anyone, even if you dont know who robert mcnamara is.

  • This is one of those fantastically made trailers that gives me goosebumps. I know it sounds weird but i'm a sucker for great trailers. Check out the Amores Perros trailer too... it's fookin beautiful.

  • i know, me 2!!!!!! I LOVE GOOD TRAILERS

watch no end in sight's trailer

  • Good shout, i'm gonna check that film out.

Another trailer i love that i just saw is the third Terminator Salvation trailer. It'll probably be a disappointment but the trailer is fucking epic! I think music plays a huge part in a trailer, and the NIN track fits it perfectly.

  • awesome thanks watching that film now ty!

  • internet will save us all...

  • Even a few days after Obama took office last week one of our unmanned drone planes dropped a bomb in a village in Pakistan killing not just some al Qaeda targets but innocent civilians, including 3 children.

So it may be that we are destined to learn nothing from history and go on repeating the same old mistakes.

  • Welcome to the reality of war. Even in the most noble, worthy of causes and where conflict exists, innocent people get killed.

    Obama is a realist.

  • Comment removed

  • Poor RTobert, a Quacker set himself on fire inf ront of his office :(

  • great movie

  • is it a human nature to repeat same mistakes? that's what i'm most afraid of since history never fails to show it.

  • Robert S McNamara is brilliant, explaining how Vietnam saw USA as a would be colonial power trying to occupy their country. McNamara went to Vietnam in 1995 and met his Vietnamese counterpart in the war with both discussing why the war occurred. I tell all my friends about this film. It is a must to be seen.

  • If he (Donald Dumbsfeld) would have the greatness to admit his vicious mistakes he might earn my respect ... but I doubt.

  • rummy just tries to look like him

  • Fog of War was an amazing film. One of my favorites. We may see Fog of War II starring Donald Rumsfeld someday.

  • Doubtful. The difference is McNamara always had a conscience and guilt, Rumsfeld never has.

  • nuke is a disaster for both sides, sun tzu would agree.

  • brilliant movie enjoyed it a lot

  • quote for the ages "We were wrong".

  • it gives me the shivers whenever i hear mcnamara say it. it's just impossible for a human being to comprehend all the stuff he talks about.

  • well ok Philip Glass wrote the music but the artist is Michael Riesman

  • I wonder if Donny Rumsfeld will ever do a documentary like this and confess the lies of the Iraq War.

  • Another documentary that you should watch is "Why we Fight". They have segments on YouTube, just type in Why we Fight Part 1 and you are gold.

  • This documentary was so fascinating. It was great to hear McNamara's view on this 35 years later, and hear him admit he was wrong about those decisions. It still doesn't change the past, but it still was very refreshing.

  • this is one of the best documentries of all time. R. McNamara is hated by a lot of people but this documentry and his book earned the respect of many. US policies are bullshit and to hear it from someone like him.. is amazing. everyone should download this movie.

  • We've seen Iraq as an element of the "war on terror", not what the Iraqi Sunnis and Shiites see it as, a "civil war".

  • You can do that for almost any quote about Vietnam, sadly.

  • What's the song playing in the trailer at the begining? I heard it before but I don't know the name of it.

  • It's original music made for this doc by Phillip Glass. It's called Fog of War.

  • Blahcetera the song is by Michael Riesman not Philip Glass... great music though.

  • IMDB disagrees (search IMDB for Fog of War). They list Philip Glass as the composer.

I'm pretty sure Riesman is the artist on the Piano (not the composer). Music has that minimalist feel of Glass, anyways.

Not a big deal or anything--I just wanted to keep things straight.

  • I suppose you are right (though you can never 100% trust what is on IMDb, Wikipedia, or iTunes.)

In a way it does have a Glass feel.

Of course Hans Zimmer pwns all....

  • I agree, to hear a public official say "we were wrong," is refreshing.

This documentary is very moving and chilling. I have profound respect for McNamara.

  • To actually hear "We were wrong" from a politician is real greateness. I never liked his politics when he was active, but I respect McNamara now.

  • "the human race needs to think more about killing"

    Brilliant line

  • Full video of doco can be found at

video (dot) google (dot) com (slash) videoplay?docid=-8653788864462752804

Just go to google video and cut/paste the docid part.

  • "we saw vietnam as an element of the cold war not as they saw it as, a civil war. We were wrong!"

If I was a Vietnam vet listening to those words, I'd burst into tears.

  • agreed. this movie is great

  • The best damn documentary ever .... truly chilling, but in the right way.

  • McNamara is one of my favorite political figures, he is my hero, i belive his rules for a better nation is exactly what we need as americans

  • I have a clip from this on my page. check it out.

  • I am glad Errol Morris and Phillip Glass are so tight. The collaboration of Glass's Music with his or any other film such as the Qatsi trilogy gives them another level of brilliance.

  • some one needs to put the whole movie on here cause it is amazing

  • There is a full version on google video

  • link? is it free???

  • Morris is incredible.

  • great movie
