Dear: Dr. I have so many sunscreens at home, the mayority neutrogena ranging from the lowest SPF to the highest i have found wish is Neutrogena age shield face, with an SPF of 110 and is oil free wish is amazing. Nonetheless , Dr Schultz your knowledge and expertise about the topic at hand is truly gratifying; with that being said I was recently diagnosed with Melasma and would like to know what would be the best treatment for me. In regards of SPF. thanking you in advance! jennifer
From what I understand, what you're saying is that I should use a sunscreen even if It's not a very sunny day, because UVB rays are always strong enough to cause skin cancer? Should sunscreen be a daily and self-evident routine just like taking a shower or changing underwear?
Thank you so much for this video!! As an avid sunscreen wearer, I must admit I got sucked into the "hype" of ewg's claims, and was left confused and concerned about the quality of U.S. sunscreens. One issue that concerns me in particular, that I'd love your opinion on, is mineral vs. non-mineral ingredients- are sunscreens with non-mineral ingredients to be avoided??
Thanks again for your concise and professional advice!!
i'm a red head and im very pale i want to get just a pinch of tan but i cant i just burn and then it goes away. I want to be able to go to the beach on my honeymoon with worrying that im gunna get burnt but i would still like to go home with a tan. I have gone threw so many tanning oils and lotions with spf and even without, self tanning lotions make me orange.
Am i just out of luck or is there a secret potion i dont know about?
@britdanielxoxo From your description, you may not be genetically capable of tanning from the sun. For more information, do a search on YouTube of the DermTV episode titled, "Skin Care for Freckled Light Skin".
l use aveeno it has 60 spf and fps . do you recommend it ?
aother question , in one episode you said we should put the lighter cream before the havier one . however , my sunscreen is havier than my moisturizer ? so what should l apply first
@nlil555: Regarding the sunscreen, I recommend any sunscreen with an SPF of between 15 or 30 with UVA protection, or one with an even higher SPF as long as you like it enough to reapply it frequently. Since you've already told me that this product is heavier than your moisturizer, it makes me wonder whether or not it's too heavy for you, and if it's not, do you really need the moisturizer after it. In any event, sunscreen first.
my mom told me about this. is it true that sun screens that contain vitamin a MAY (only may) attribute to developing it?
and that's so dumb about the shade. when i was a teenager, my mom sat under a tree at one of my softball games and it was only a couple hours but she had TERRIBLE sunburn on her shoulders. and she was in the shade.
Thank you for your opinion, and for setting the record straight. I did not know the article was published without any scientific evidence to back it up.

wait a second... wear sunscreen every day?? hahaha what the fuck
what if its not sunny? what if you are just going about your daily business? you talk about the sun as if it is some death inducing nuisance...
people listen to me, if you are going to the beach or sunbathing on a hot day with high UV index, then yes, use sunscreen so you dont burn, by all means dont be afraid of the sun
go out and get a tan, get some vitamin d, you will look and feel great!
@Stefan2SERB UVA rays penetrate glass. And even on a cloudy day, up to 80 percent of the sun's ultraviolet rays can pass through the clouds. Sand reflects 25 percent of the sun's rays and snow reflects 80 percent of the sun's rays.
You can get Vitamin D through supplements!
Any exposure to ultraviolet rays increases your risk for skin cancer and causes premature aging. Why be tan for a few days only to end up wrinkled for the last fifty years of your life?
its attitude like that which has fucked up you westerners
you are so dependent on consumer products you no longer know how to live outside the comfort of your city suburbs
same kind of attitude towards cleaning has left millions with allergies to dust (mites) and same attitude towards going outside has lead to people allergic to certain plants and grass
need someone to tell you how to live every aspect of your life, no longer have a brain of your own
my kusin is a studier of skin cancer and she said that as long that u dont get burn it will be okay. and that sun is healthy it givs u vitamin D and antioxidexns (spelling)
@misme100 I also study skin cancer and believe that accumulated small doses of non-burning ultraviolet radiation leads to the development of skin cancer over a period of many years. In addition, I'm not aware of sun exposure creating antioxidants. If you know of evidence to that effect please share it with us.
@misme100 Actually, some people can be allergic to the sun but it's truly rare to be allergic to sunscreen. If despite the use of a chem-free sunscreen applied adequately you still develop and irritation or rash then you should see a dermatologist to determine the true cause of your problem.
@dermTVdotcom well i have he said it was some kind of kemical that basecly all of the sunscreens have, but i can use creams with sunscreens but not like pure sunscreen... so does the creams with spf..help?
@raspberrypineapple Glad to hear that you're diligent about sunscreen use! Regarding recommended sunscreens, below each episode on the DermTV official site, I list related products so you should be able to find some there. I hope that helps.

@machine24 In short, I believe it is and there is no peer review evidence to the contrary.

@Stefan2SERB I actually refuse to use hand sanitizers because it eliminates immunities to allergens and bacteria.
I never said I was against the outdoors, I don't understand how either of your comparisons make sense.
You won't gain an allergy to the sun by wearing sunblock.
It's important to where sunscreen, that is all I'm saying. The sun is bad for your skin.
EAC1215 1 year ago
@Stefan2SERB Also, don't generalize.
I'm not a consumerists.
Supplements can be a fantastic way to get your daily allotment of vitamins and antioxidants.
For that matter, consumerism isn't only a problem in the west, it's a problem everywhere.
Explain to me how I'm so fucked up?
I don't understand.
EAC1215 1 year ago
@Stefan2SERB For that matter, what credentials do you have?
Dr. Schultz has been a dermatologist for over thirty years.
Don't try to tell people what to do when you don't know yourself.

0hpalpitations 1 year ago 8
@0hpalpitations ... I live in Australia, so this may be a bit difficult.
-> Grahams SunClear -- I use this one. It is oil-based but dries up during the day.
-> Invisible Zinc (I haven't used this but appears smooth and less oily.)
Both of these are a bit expensive and can be found at most pharmacies (IZ at supermarkets). Also, a small amount goes a long way.
Otherwise, use any that have zinc/titanium and no other "funny-sounding" ingredients and no nanos. Hope this helps! :D
