  • These are the Mosou tribal people

  • Free love is the way it should be

  • wouldnt incest happen really easily if they do that???

  • It's amazing how succesful the Chinese communist party is. National Geographic didn't even use the word "Tibetan". Only "southwestern Chinese". Shame. A nation conquered completly.

  • @EmperorOfMacedon there's 50+ minorities .. you sure these are tibetan?

  • @EmperorOfMacedon

I agree with you. It is TIBET and NOT CHINA. It is clearly a Tibetan-Buddhist society that is being shown. China has no concept of this kind of individual freedom and man-woman relationship - its all controlled by the state.

  • @Rukminiji But isn't Tibet (unfortunately) controlled by China?

  • @Silvergordikuki Yes, unfortunately it is. So is Nepal these days. AT the Nepal-China border all signage is in Chinese, food and clothes are Chinese. Tons of Hindu and Buddhist temples have been destroyed and Churches mushroomed in their place, which are in league with Maoists in various ways. Tibet's pristine beauty has been marred forever...

  • @Rukminiji u can see tibetan influence in places like ladakh, certain regions in nepal, and among the balti people in kashmir and northern pakistan....those people aren't all necessarily tibetans but they've adopted tibetan customs and religion because of the centuries old contact those regions had with tibet.

  • @Rukminiji the musou people aren't ethnic tibetans. they are 2 different ethnic groups. free love is an alien concept in tibetan society too. the reason why the musou pracice tibetan buddhism is because not too long ago(before chinese colonized tibet), tibet was a culturally dominant country...so tibetan buddhism spread to & was adopted by neighboring peoples in regions outside of tibet(hence how the musou came to practice tibetan buddhism).

  • @EmperorOfMacedon but the mosuo people aren't ethinc tibetans. they are a separate group from tibetans. the musou only happen to live outside the tibetan border(south-west region of china). the reason they practice tibetan buddhism is because of tibet's dominant cultural influence to regions beyond tibet(for e.g. regions in northern pakistan(balti people), and north india as well as eastern india practice tibetan buddhism but they aren't tibetans. "free love" is not practiced by the tibetans.

  • Their daughter is adorable!

  • if a system works then system is acceptable

  • if this is their tradition, then it is a traditional marriage, in the mosuo tradition. though its obviously not a marriage of the western european tradition, in that case its unconventional.

  • So this means that the guy could hook up with that grandma in brightly coloured cloth...very nicely set up culture :D

  • This and other videos about Yunnan Mosu culture are a good adjunct to the book Leaving Mother Lake: A Girlhood at the Edge of the World by Yang Erche Namu & Christine Mathieu

  • I lol'd at the man at the door with a knife, hahaha that's pretty fuckin' scary if you ask me. Seems to me he doesn't understand sarcasm.

  • This video describes what is called "polyamory" - a social arrangement in which a man or woman may have multiple spouses. Personally I like the idea of having more than one male - keep you warm at night AND - (fortune cookie say): lucky woman have man in kitchen; other pick up sock, clean window…

  • @999yullan Three words, YOU - FUCKING - WISH

  • @kdlt235

Yeahhh, Baby… These be difficult times. The more bread winners the better, especially since men tend to throw themselves around like roosters in a hen house.

  • Good luck to them. As long as they are happy!

  • It was the norm in western indigenous families to have community raised children...they were not neglected and someone was always there to care for them and they were loved by many Mothers and Fathers...if a woman didn't want to live with a man and wanted to live with another she simply changed tents and made it clear what she wanted if they man didn't like it the community would say for the benefit of all of us let her be and he had to accept her choice tomorrow is another day.

  • The Mosou

  • Interesting! Nice to see a matrilineal society. I think it can make women happier. All the best.

  • @signingupiseasyd Ask a single mother in the inner city what she thinks of this system. Ask her if she's happier raising the children of many men without much of their physical presence, financial or emotional support.

  • @artsylovelylady Yes, that's true. Maybe cultural context is important, also.

  • jiba means dick

  • The video puts a weird spin on it, but matrilineal free love families, living with your kin on your mother's side, were found around the world, if you do some digging. You won't see it on tv movies or school though. In fact, when we were free people this structure would have been the norm, the basic unit of tribal society. Can you think of two good reasons why, in a free society,it would be the woman's brother that would be the natural male guardian of her children, not the biological fathers?

  • ah this sounds like a cool thing to practice...... :O

  • It's sad that alot of the children don't have much contact with their fathers. :(

  • that's unfortunate that the role of father is so diminished in this culture.

  • I don't think that the role of "father" is diminished. A child needs parental figures, which don't have to be fulfilled by their biological parents. It seems to me that in this society they have a strong family structure. It is just a superficial comment based on my little knowledge of this culture :)

  • @o0ItsumoUreshii0o why any man wouldn't wish to raise his own biological children is appalling to me. it's not superficial. it's just how i feel. a child should know their father. he should be an authority in the lives of his own children. i can't imagine a man willingly sitting by and allowing another man to raise his children.

  • @o0katiekins0o

While I do agree that people should take responsibility for their own offspring, I disagree that there is a need for a single biologically related male parent to fulfill the authoritarian role. Who is to say the women can't be authority figures?

  • @TrojanMuleMCCCXXXVII well my confusion over this particular kind of "free love" has a lot to do with this area being very small and women are having children with several different men within this small community, it just seems like incest would be rampant.

  • @TrojanMuleMCCCXXXVII

Both the male and the female should be authoritarian to the child, but the hierarchy should still go: Father, Mother.

  • @trenton9

Why does there need to be such a hierachy? It is because your cultural norm dictates so? This kind of society (the one depicted in the video) works fine for them. The simple fact is that children don't NEED a mother AND a father, they only need parental figures. Parental figures could be anyone who legitimately has the well being of the child as their priority.

  • @TrojanMuleMCCCXXXVII

We don't NEED two legs to survive either. Heck, we could even have someone else's legs grafted onto our stubs, but we'd be better off with our own.

  • @trenton9

In what way would a child's Mother and Father (do you mean biological parents? if so, what about adoptive parents?) be better than having seemingly easily substituted family role models from which the child can take much larger samples of good morals and values in the case that any one of these role models may be lacking?

  • @SheepRCool17

Adoptive parents can be absolutely wonderful parents. Though, a child being given up for adoption is a HEAVY decision. Whether the parent is unable to care for their child or worse, dead; giving that child up is a heavy, usually last ditch decision - not a frivolous one. If a person has a child and is able and fit to take care of that child, they need to do just that. Women don't birth children just to pass them to the man up the street and be done with it.

  • @trenton9 Thanks for the reply! but I think you missed my main question:

I wasn't focused on adoptive parents. I was asking about the culture in this video's style of living.

  • Matriarchy Society - very practical why of thinking !

Not strange - strange is to believe the opposite !

  • Yunnan

  • Surya, i love you.... do you love me? will you marry me?

  • complicated

  • Very strange.

  • Very strange.

  • Very strage.

  • i love the music :)

  • "Free" trade, and "free" love, are not unrelated. There is little freedom to be found in either, because both attempt to bury the question of freedom to reproduce, either economically, or bio-cognitively as the case may be.

  • They seem to be happy.

  • I have had to mirror negative intentions towards me and I am very good at it! 99% of the time, no negative sexual energy will be tolorated by me. I have chose the wrong boyfriends in the past, and can't stand being used negatively anymore. I have always been committed to the sexual relationships that I have had.

  • I believe the bible is correct on matters of this. I think that sex should be in a committed relationship. The fruits of the sexually union should be examined to see if it is a positive union. Sexually transmitted diseases are a product of promiscuity, and sexually perversions!!!!!!

  • I think that it is the intention of the sexual act that is to be considered. To loan out ones husband to concieve a child when there is a baren wife can be an ordained gift of God.

  • whoa.. when did YOU become beautiful? (wtf!)

  • are there homosexuals in this culture? (of course there are - but is it socially acknowledged?)

  • Very nice. Now I can finally look forward to meeting a few nice Chinese girls and settling down in the country.

  • I did a research project on this for an Anthropology course. It's really neat. It just shows how marriage and relationships are socially constructed ideas. There is no right or wrong way to be in a relationship as some would like us to believe. Nothing is normal so nothing can be strange.

  • Hell yeah! I'm a Forensic Anthro. Major and I've taken multiple Cultural Anthropology courses and they are extremely fascinating... It's amazing how society constructs it's standards for people to live by.

  • valentines must be a bitch!

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • those guys arent muslims, theyre kinda like imposters. they grew up with muslims so they use that die for islam thingy as an exuse to blow them selfs up, which is werid cuz islam forbids suicide. 0.o

  • That guy sounded more like a rapist than am invited guest. "I pry her door with my knife." LOL.

  • haha thats wut i was thinkin...they should have door knobs. lol

  • @khemaradsobai if a pretty girl pryed your door with a knife, what would you do?

  • @khemaradsobai if a pretty girl pryed your door with a knife, what would you do?

  • @tubxyoob

Does she look like Linda Blair from the move "The Exorcist"?

  • I don't see the Problem, looks way more fun then monogamy(^^)Besides, they're happy. Isn't that what marrige is all about?

  • that baby was really cute.

  • if there are 9 people working hard then it is really easy... HAHAHAHAHAHAAHHAHAHAHHAHAHH!!!! THIS MADE ME PISS MY PANTS

  • hahah yeah ! 9 people working hard! then it is really easy.... damn In America we said ten people working (surely 3 of them goofing off) and maybe we we will finish

  • I never ment the multi couple thing you asshole I meant the fact you video taped yout girl friends fighting*:P

  • Blah blah blah!!! Sorry I'm not an adult ok? You can't expect 15 year old to see the world like you do.

  • I'm not a perv ok**sticks tounge** watch them your selves. And also only a loser films them selves. now stop talking to me too DumbASS

  • Blah blah blah...**:P get a life loser!!!**

  • Well it's the first time I'm meeting a man whore. Good luck trying to marry them.

P.S I wasn't trying to tell anyone how to live did I say they shouldn't do this or that. God learn to read instead of adding stuff that aren't true MAN WHORE n_~

  • I guess it works for them. That being said, I couldn't do it! I wouldn't want to share my guy with other women.

  • Look at the Chimpanzee and Bonobo. Chimpanzee society is chaotic, war-like and killing while in Bonobo society(matriarchal), it's freelove, quiet, peaceful and etc...

Christian, Islam = SEXISM = cult

  • I don't know about you but last time I checked I wasn't a monkey.

  • Matriarch is the form of ancient society. Look at elephant herd, lion herd.. females are the strongest of all. female bears are the strongest. In China, most ethnic groups are name after their elegant, ancient, beautiful, batik, embroidery clothes... these clothes are made only by women. There are still some matriarchal society around the world - oceania, some pacific islander groups.

  • this explains why china is so overpopulated

  • So basically the guy and gal can have as many partners as they like within the village.

    0_____0

  • guess what Dumbass, of course to me it's silly, but I never said anything was wrong with it ok? fuck off, and guess what thats what a whole lot of people will say if they saw this too.

  • Although I disagree with some of these people... Dumbazz is right(haha).

If we were all the same, there would be no reason to document history.

  • maybe we only need to document history because we repeat mistakes all the time :) otherwise I think our point of valuing difference is absolutely to support.

  • It's like the worker serves its queen. Cool.

  • It's like every fight for womans right is as wasted as humans are equally egoistic. uncool :)

  • This is a bit silly...I would never like a man who want to have more then one wife.

They can do what they want, I won't say anything, in islam a Man is allowed to have more then one wife**4 is the limit** the women don't have to be with them unless they want to. **Women are only allowed one man**

  • in islam a man is only allowed to have more then one wife if he has enough money to support them all evenely, so many just stick to the one

  • These people need to get educated

  • they ARE educated. thats why their way of living works. what education ca yyou proof that makes people essentially "better" or more happy without artificial entertainment ? I wouldnt accept a second lover , but that is build up in society, fear of loss etc. it is not a better education, basically. "better education" wiped out entire cultures.

  • Different ways of life, work for different peoples. Ethnicity, Culture and Religion play major roles in a people's outlook on many things, including sexuality. You're way isn't the only way, nor the best way. Ignorence is poison, knowledge is sustenence.

  • Isn't this in Tibet?

  • The idea that western traditional marriage is the way we all need to live is silly. Even western strong Christians usually fail to live in a one-man-one woman lifestyle, about half of marriages end in divorce, and many others involve cheating.

This group is open and honest about their relationships and their family life.

    Honesty works in relationships.

  • 65% of all marriages in western countries end in divore :P

  • Comment removed

  • @JohnDeBunkTest. marriage end mostly in divorce b/c of divorce laws that favor women who hence do most of the divorcing. if divorce laws were more balanced as in a women who starts a divorce cant get anything from the man less divorce will occur and people will try to work it out. i mean why stay with a man if u can divorce him and possibly get more money from him without doing any wife duties. cohabitiation is for men what divorce is for women under this system.

  • @JohnDeBunkTest

meh, some fail some stay strong, it is not the religion that has anything to do with it (unless there is some strain between people of different religion) my church has a mixture......marriage can help and or hurt it all depends on the couple

  • @JohnDeBunkTest Free love looks great for men, terrible for women! Call me old fashioned but it looks like the women get the short end of the stick in this deal. The man gets to move on but the woman has the raise the children by herself. That may be paradise for a man but from the perspective of a woman who knows that there are other ways to structure society to give women more support, this system has no appeal.

  • @artsylovelylady Women are not raising children by themselves, male relatives of the household take part in child rearing. So if, for example, biological father or mother die, a child will be taken care of by extended family

  • @artsylovelylady Women are not raising children by themselves, male relatives of the household take part in child rearing. So if, for example, biological father or mother dies, a child will be taken care of by extended family

  • @alia284 OMG, that's such wishful thinking. You assume all single mothers have enough support from their extended families to make up for the loss of a father. Go down to a jail and talk to some of the inmates there who grew up without a father and with only a struggling mother who worked the night shift. There are generations of struggling single mothers in the ghetto with no male support. Ask a social worker who well free love lifestyle has worked for women left holding the bag in the ghetto.

  • @artsylovelylady Meant to say, "Ask a social worker how well free love lifestyle has worked for women left holding the bag in the ghetto."

  • @artsylovelylady I meant within Mosuo culture, I was not talking about industrial societies.

  • CAN Everyone Please Shut THE HELL UP!!!!

Enjoy differnet cultures and traditions you bunch of arguers!!!

  • Oh, god, how many closed minded people.

"Superior species" wtf is that?Birds?Wolfs?they are usually monogamic, yes.But hey, we are primates. And primates are usually not monogamic(chimp, orangutans, bonobos).Quite the oposite, the males usually have lots of females.

"Superior species" " Inferior Species"...Superior is the one that fits your cultural standarts, and inferior the ones who dont.

Aids:China is having quite a problem with AIDS too.All they need to do is use conddom, dumb ass.

  • im moving there.

  • Similar relationship appeared in ancient Japan(Heian Period), but people still got married. Though it seems that multiple partnership was only allowed for men after marriage, but not for women.

  • You're the savages, remember the celtic were nothing but a bunch of savages barbaric people.

  • you should be stone because you're dumb.

  • In your village women would be stoned because they have mutiple partners?

Damn it Islam, why do you kill your own people?

This is why this village is great, there's no religion.

They just have a party in honour of the great harvest.

  • I'm afraid your wrong. listen in at 1:44. Having a deity implies that they have religion.

  • Not necessarily... a deity is just an idol. A false one maybe, but dogma determines religion.

  • Either way, LovelyYTRocks statement was an unfounded assertion.

  • haha "oh! how did u get so pretty" haha what was she ugly before?!? :S

  • with a watermelon and mind this video has no imac values with photo booth crap camera and an ipod phone guitar power guitar power guitar pick with a touch screen guitar and an a for duck.

    ROLLERBLADES!!!!

    lol first comment

  • datacore04, dont be a dumbass. You know exactly what they mean and are talking about.

  • But they'd really be fucking themselves if they walked around naked. Don't they hand-make they're clothes? I dunno.

  • Social structures are so strange. All around the world its either sex, power or money that creates and regulates social constructs. I think the Amish are the only ones who probably have the most healthy culture. ~Raven

  • you might be on to something

  • If you recall rejecting technology and keeping your people stupid so they're easier to control a healthy culture, then I suppose you're right.

  • The Amish, you're talking about, right? The Chinese certainly don't seem to be rejecting technology. But it's a huge, fascinating country with so much complicated stuff going on. Whao they were/are ahead of their time and it seems like their pressing delete often. The cultural revoutional wasn't so great. The Amish....haha, if they still exist, they're kinda weird, I think.

  • the chinese are players : )

    lol

but when they say "traditional marrige" its like ther saying that they way WE do marrige is the only was your supposed to...

well maybe this is their "marrige" perhaps

  • insanepeng-It's enjoyable to fuck Chinese.

  • who ever lets their wife sleep whit other guy is a cockholder than againg if they want 2 you will know their hoes and cant be whit them

  • Not those are the ignorant "Americans" that try to live the easy living by any means possibly.

We need hard working people. Which is mostly gone in the American culture.

    ...

  • booo why get married

  • 100% true

  • Sounds awesome to me!

  • Awesome. Maybe some day the rest of the world will be enlightened enough to allow such free love.

  • whats the diff? itz same as american culture.... fuckin living without marrigeee .......

  • "In southwest China, one culture allows men and women to have multiple partners."

Erm... Since when having MULTIPLE partners is a norm in American society? There are Americans with multiple partners undeniably, but that is unacceptable to most people...

  • how can i make pudding

  • k i don't remember subscribing to this channel

  • lol

  • how interresting, I would have thought that they would be more strict, I thought that Asian communities were more strict...I mean this is still kind of strict with the whole having to ask the mother for permission, but this is much more open that I thought it would be...

  • You are thinking of a very certain part of china. Study it a bit more. I think you would find it interesting.

  • what part shoudl I study??

  • long time ago, many ethnic groups in China are polygamous and are matriarchal society.. now many adopted the chinese patriarchal society which is why you don't see this anymore. jealousy was never part of ancient ethnic people living in china but now it is. long ago, open marriages were cultural stuff... it doesn't mean you can do whatever, you have rules to follow as well.

  • I believe in Marriage and commitment but this is sorta interesting just sum it up in one word ---- Orgy ------ XD JK XD

  • FUCK MARRIAGE!! Make a commitment if you want, but paper and gold does not make a relationship.

  • so true...i don't see the point to marriage, if you are committed to each other thats all that matters...

  • Funny how it is viewed by most as complete opposite here in the U.S. People look down on you and think you have something less if you are not married. Because of tradition being taught as fact or the only thing taught, you can't even date 70to80% of the population if you don't want to marry!

  • itz just like America... without the marriage.

  • You can still do it in North America... you just have to not marry.

  • aww that little girl looked adorable

  • This is how life should be lived not tied up to one person.

  • I think I came across these people in Yunnan this summer.

  • wild..its amazing how diverse the whole world is

  • no gay sex?! what a ripoff

  • lulz

  • i wish that i could live like this.

  • It's great to see that people are permitted to define the structure of their relationships in some countries. As long as no ones rights are violated, it would be nice to see individuals defining the terms and structure of their relationship here. It is unfortunate that the US still imposes restrictions on something so fundamentally personal and private. I doubt that we'll be seeing paperwork with multiple lines for "spouse" any time in the near future.

  • CharlesVarney, I still suspect they're restrictive in this village. Just in a different way. What if they want to form a monogamous union? What if the father wants custody of the children instead of the mother? What about gays... and gay adoption? Or any other adoption issues?

I'm sure there are plenty of things they discriminate against. I really wouldn't be surprised. I doubt you'd be able to find a society that truly allows you to define your maritial and/or family structure freely.

  • Crio3mo: I can imagine that monogamy would be simple as long as both parties in the relationship agreed to keep it that way. Though, instances of "cheating" would probably be less as they would be free to discuss it openly before entering into the relationship. As for homosexual relationships, I do not recall hearing them mentioned in the video. Bisexuality would probably be more common though, as it would still allow for relationships resulting in children. Record keeping is a must.

  • Free Love! WHOO!

  • polygamy

  • It's nice to see recognition that the preposterous notion of "marriage = one man + one woman" isn't universal.

  • tecknicaly this aint free love ass he has to pay gifts and also get the blessing from the mother..

  • I can only imagine the religous people out there that frown on this.
