The sentiment behind the song is great. That said, the versions by the Original Caste and Coven are far, far better. Truth be told, Cher is far from a good singer. She can hold a few notes and carry a tune, like most people on the street. She has a horn sound when she really blows, which is why "she blows."
I remember seeing this cartoon version, which was originally made to go with the hit version of the song sung by Coven in 1971. I guess they licensed to cartoon to use here on the Sonny and Cher show, obviously without the ending credits which the original cartoon had, saying the song was sung by Coven and from the movie Billy Jack.

Not a big Cher fan, but this was one of her better performances, in my opinion. The song, the message of the song, is one that I have respected from the first time I heard it as the theme-song to the movie Billy Jack 37 years ago, when I was 11. The song is an amazing one, and I just wish every Governmental/Military person in this country (U.S.) would take a moment to try and learn it. With what we are doing today in Iraq, in Afghanistan, the message is needed more than ever before perhaps.

I agree that this was definitely the "forerunner" of what is known today as music videos and as always, the lovely Cher does a great job on the song. And I agree that she and Sonny never looked better... I always thought they were a great looking couple. But make no mistake about it, the creative mind behind all that Sonny & Cher accomplished was that of Sonny Bono. It took them both to make their team what it was, and it was great... Cher had the voice and Sonny was the creative thinker.

Yes - The things money cannot buy. Lots of division here about this tune. Back when it came out, though, there wasn't a lot of partisan bickering. Cher did covers of 3 other songs with animation also. Bad Leroy Brown by Jim Croce, Brand New Key by Melanie, and Black and White by Three Dog Night. Bad Leroy Brown used to be on YouTube, but apparently was removed by the powers that be.
This is a fine memory. I remember loving Cher's version on this show when I was a child, and I loved the animation (admittedly a bit ropy by today's standards). I also love the incorporation of "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" to bookend the song.

The original song was by Original Caste, and was released late 1969, reaching the #35 position by early 1970. Coven covered it 2 years after for the movie. So you are right about the movie, but the song predated it 2 years. Actually, you should heard Original Caste's version since it is vastly superior. Coven covered the song, note by note and did not change a thing.

The sentiment behind the song is great. That said, the versions by the Original Caste and Coven are far, far better. Truth be told, Cher is far from a good singer. She can hold a few notes and carry a tune, like most people on the street. She has a horn sound when she really blows, which is why "she blows."

I remember seeing this cartoon version, which was originally made to go with the hit version of the song sung by Coven in 1971. I guess they licensed to cartoon to use here on the Sonny and Cher show, obviously without the ending credits which the original cartoon had, saying the song was sung by Coven and from the movie Billy Jack.

What bothers me off about this video and others like it is that pro-war people misinterpret the song as a pro-hero-soldier worship/pro-war song. But it was not a pro-war song. However, seeing Cher do this song, with her Nancy Reagan appearance, and then Sonny Bono at the end of the video, is disgusting. I prefer the original version, thank you.

Not a big Cher fan, but this was one of her better performances, in my opinion. The song, the message of the song, is one that I have respected from the first time I heard it as the theme-song to the movie Billy Jack 37 years ago, when I was 11. The song is an amazing one, and I just wish every Governmental/Military person in this country (U.S.) would take a moment to try and learn it. With what we are doing today in Iraq, in Afghanistan, the message is needed more than ever before perhaps.

And I agree that she and Sonny never looked better... I always thought they were a great looking couple. This is a fine memory. I remember loving Cher's version on this show when I was a child, and I loved the animation (admittedly a bit ropy by today's standards). I also love the incorporation of "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" to bookend the song.

In Cher's early career it was a time of intense dissent against Vietnam War, the 'schooling' cartoon telling about hypocrisies on both sides of coin
was a time of African Americans struggling for equal rights and 'women's lib'
cartoon animation was popular then, like Beatles 'yellow submarine'/beatles cartoon series

Oh, this sucks so suckily. First, Cher in a Betty Ford Hairdo, next, Maurice Sendak-like animation to prop up the corrupt status quo. And then there's Sonny, who always adds a little extra sucikness to all equations.

Now I remember...the original was by "Original Caste", released late 1969. You can search it by this name and enjoy since the Original Caste version was the first and the better...

And yeah, I like the "Original Caste" version as well; listened to all three yesterday (Cher, OC, and Coven). I mainly remember (from the 70's) the Coven version from the radio, but I saw the movie and def remember the movie version.

Honestly, I don't remember; I think it was from Christmas 1971.
Interestingly, My sister and my BIL were Sonny & Cher look-alikes; their resemblance was quite striking.

Yeah I remember it around Xmas but I think was a little bit earlier, perhaps 1970 or even 1969. Does anybody remember who sang the original? I think either was Helen Reddy, Peter, Paul & Mary or even Jonni Mitchell but really don't remember.

The movie "Billy Jack" was released in 1971, so this couldn't have been before then.

The original song was by Original Caste, and was released late 1969, reaching the #35 position by early 1970. Coven covered it 2 years after for the movie. So you are right about the movie, but the song predated it 2 years. Actually, you should heard Original Caste's version since it is vastly superior. Coven covered the song, note by note and did not change a thing.
