It's too bad that Borel didn't settle her down a bit more off the pace - especially since this was her first outing at a mile and a quarter. It just seems like a very poor strategy. She was too lightly raced for this distance. Certainly this result was no reason to retire her - her time was far from terrible and very few races are at this distance. Too bad she's gone, can't wait to see how the Curlin foal she has turns out!

There are quite a few racehorses who do this more or less, and a lot of horses get there tongues tied. If a dressage horse does this: ....penalty....But it has nothing, just nothing to do with respiration.......

Rachel Alexandra left the experienced 1 1/4 miler Life at Ten, 10 1/2 lengths back. Rachel still finished a close second. I say if they adjust their strategy she can do it. She was tired. This was her first 1 1/4 race, and she's used to letting up after a certain distance!
She carried top weight, was in a speed duel, and serious defeated a G1 winner that had won a 1 1/4 mile race. Rachel Alexandra rocks! I hope she races in the Beldame.
@love4horses1 10 furlongs is never going to be the stage where she shows her best stuff. 8.5 - 9 furlongs is the ticket, I think. A very gallant effort, but not one that's indicative that she'd be successful in a stacked G1 race at 10 furlongs.
After Zenyatta blew by that good field in the 2009 BCC at 2:00.2 and this race was at 2:04, Rachel would have been 20 lengths behind Zenyatta. That would be really tough even for the pro-biased dirt east coaster to vote for OVERRATED RACHEL..oh well
All I can say is: "wow!". What a race. Poor Rachel sure felt the sting of the whip, but Shug, and a super game effort by Persistently. Goes to show the underdog can get it done when they continue to learn and improve.

The tongue was not only out the last to furlongs it has already been out when they saddled her. The tongue has nothing to do with the race.
