I've always loved this song, ever since the first time I heard it. No one can sing it like Nancy Griffith, who puts her heart and soul into every song she sings. I find hope in this song and I thank you for that, Nancy- you are blessed with such a talent and you give so much to so many.
Snow capped mountains maybe just a little less white now? (sorry climate change skeptics) But the sentiments Nancy sings about here remain as true as ever! Always LOVE to play this at Christmas time. Instruments of the Prince of Peace..Hope of hopes. The Heart of every (wo)man
No one can put the feeling into a song like Nance does. Just the best on this type of music. Beautiful voice and a beautiful soul, you could not sing this way otherwise. Merrry Christmas, everyone!!
The idiot that called Nanci someone who sounds like she is singing from a bar in Texas as if you is a country hick is such an idiot. Nanci has a great voice and can play anywhere. She did the best version of this song long before Bette Midler whom I love ever heard of the song. You should be ashamed of yourself and go get a life.
This song is not about any colour of trash. Infact it's not about trash at all. It's colour blind. It's even blind to past folly. It's about the future and seeing beyond our past differences and mutual hatred. That's why it's special. All you're doing is insulting the song (and it's message) not the singer. That's a pity.
For the record, Julie Gold wrote this and therefore is the original version. Nanci Griffith made it a major hit in the UK before Bette Midler made it a hit here in the US
Snow capped mountains outside my window - not much harmony 'at a distance' but plenty close too. The Voice of Hope, the Voice of Peace speaks to us especially on this most special of days. May it become the voice of everyman (and woman).
Finally found it - after lots of searching (had the song but didn't know the singer). This is by far the most superior version of this treasure. It's that rare combination of a brilliant song being sung by the right singer (with attitude) at the right time with the perfect arrangement. It brooks no rivals. Just right for this time of year and the times we are living through. Time for a re-release (but this version only). And only 25000 views? ... That's a travesty!
I remember so clearly when Nanci sang this song before the viny lp came out in the 80s at one of her shows in Houston. It blew my mind and I almost cried. Its that hearwarming. Wish Nanci would come to Houston again
I beg to differ! Although Bette Midler's version is the original, and that is probably why you consider it to be the "acid test", it's hardly the best! broxi16 was quite correct in her/his very astute critique of Nancy Griffith's rendition. She puts soul, passion and feeling into it. Compared to this version, Bette Midler's is just a cardboard cutout. A mere facsimile! Bette looks and sounds like she is reading from a teleprompter and can't wait to go home! Bad Karaoke anyone?
EDIT: I should have said Bette Midler's version was the one that really popularized the song. Original song was by Julie Gold, and performed by many other artists since.
EDIT: I should have said Bette Midler's version was the one that really popularized the song. Original song was by Julie Gold, and performed by many other artists since. Nancy is still the best!
@dwtaylor666 "very astute critique"? "facsimile"? Wow, when they said pretentious and convoluted you were first in line weren't you? Do you think this is Rolling Stone magazine or something?
It's pretty obvious you hate Bette's version just cause it's the popular one, snob much?
@SarzWix No, people hate it cause it's popular and idiots think hating mainstream is cool. This version sounds like some hillbilly singing at a bar in Texas, I can understand why white trash might find it better though. ;)
every 1ce in a blue moon we hear a song that goes beyond standard songs by a great measure.a song with words so true to life that it cannot be altered to be improved,or sung any better.folks uve just heard one of these songs :)
This version was in heavy rotation on the CBC Radio afternoon show back in the day. They played the Midler version once or twice too, but mostly this one.
I guess you could say this is the closest thing there is to an adult contemporary protest song...
Julie Gold Got the piano from her parents, shipped to her small New York apartment.. Had to wait 24 hours till the piano reached room temperature. Sat down and wrote this song.
He is sustaining us now.

Nice song, but there are none above Bette Midlers singing on this song.

Bette Midler sings from the throat but Nanci Griffths sings from the heart and that's what makes her version the best.

There's no mistaking James Taylor's awesome impeccable tasteful harmony vocals, genius putting these two together on this song.
