I've always loved this song, ever since the first time I heard it. No one can sing it like Nancy Griffith, who puts her heart and soul into every song she sings. I find hope in this song and I thank you for that, Nancy- you are blessed with such a talent and you give so much to so many.

Finally found it - after lots of searching (had the song but didn't know the singer). This is by far the most superior version of this treasure. It's that rare combination of a brilliant song being sung by the right singer (with attitude) at the right time with the perfect arrangement. It brooks no rivals. Just right for this time of year and the times we are living through. Time for a re-release (but this version only). And only 25000 views? ... That's a travesty!

I remember so clearly when Nanci sang this song before the viny lp came out in the 80s at one of her shows in Houston. It blew my mind and I almost cried. Its that hearwarming. Wish Nanci would come to Houston again

I beg to differ! Although Bette Midler's version is the original, and that is probably why you consider it to be the "acid test", it's hardly the best! broxi16 was quite correct in her/his very astute critique of Nancy Griffith's rendition. She puts soul, passion and feeling into it. Compared to this version, Bette Midler's is just a cardboard cutout. A mere facsimile! Bette looks and sounds like she is reading from a teleprompter and can't wait to go home! Bad Karaoke anyone?

This version was in heavy rotation on the CBC Radio afternoon show back in the day. They played the Midler version once or twice too, but mostly this one.

I guess you could say this is the closest thing there is to an adult contemporary protest song...
