I find his voice hovering when he's high...his vibrato his incredible ans so much the expressivity!! However I find that soprano women's voice are more "pures".
You have to remember that the recording technology was in its infancy at the time of this recording. Therefore the tone of his voice and quality of the recording is not anything like we are used to now, even recordings 10 to 15 years ago were still somewhat lacking compared to today.Plus he was getting on in years and had probably performed more times than he should to pay his way as I am sure the fees were quite low then.
Being able to hear this is like seeing through a little window into a different time....I know he had lost a lot of vocal control by this point, but it's still SO cool to hear!
I wonder what he must have sounded like in his prime. His voice seems to be just a shadow of what it must have been years previously. He's still lovely though.
There is something hauntingly beautiful about his voice, when I forget the noise... somehow it fills me with sadness. Thank you for putting it on Youtube, EquinoxeIV.
JB0071000,if I am crazy,then,Giacomo Puccini,Pietro Mascagni,Giuseppe Verdi,Enrico Caruso,Giacomo Lauri-Volpi,Teresa Stolz,Giuseppina Pasqua,.......were crazy,too,and they were not capable to recognize a great artist:they adored Moreschi's voice,and were in great admiration of his phenomenal talent.
But I'm sure that you have a much better musical ear than these mediocre artists.
@Juliet0307 That some modern listeners do not like this might be because they listen differently and totally miss those aspects that were important to Moreschi's contemporaries. Moreschi was concerned about moving by his performance, while modern performers are more concerned about perfection and a constantly beautiful sound. I am not sure what has caused this shift in perception; maybe it is because music is today primarily heard on recordings instead of direct live contact?
Each to their own, Andrea Bocelli does as nice a rendition, even though he's a tenor, this poor mite sounds as if he's been on the helium! Whilst I apreciate that you guys & girls may not like how he sounds, but let me give you an example, Jimmy Somerville, he sounded worse than htis guy, even though he's got all his lower faculty in tact!
He has such a wonderful legato,such a support!The nuances are extraordinary,the style is perfect,the diction so understandable!And what a soul!What a musician!

Beautiful voice, but so sad, somehow. How could they practise such barbarian things? And in the 19th century too!

Allessandro Moreschi (The angel from Rome) was 46 years old when this was recorded, and he sounds like a boy, man that's scary!

He made this recording when he was around 54 years old. By this time he had lost most of his pitch and his singing talent.

He would've given it all away to feel a vagina.

Not that I've listened to many versions of this song, but this one is the best I've heard so far. Beautiful, but also very creepy.

Hauntingly beautiful, if a bit wobbly at some points.

it's neat to hear recordings that are over a hundred years old...but did musicians really think this person's singing was good? If so, ouch.
