The ship broke in half due to the stresses on the aft expansion joint(third funnel from the back), the joint was pulled open further than it should of been and started breaking up, when the ship broke apart it was still being held in place by a large section of the hull bottom which later fell out.
(cont) thus the weight of the front of the ship because of all the water would cause the ship to break up in half and the back to wobble in the air because of lesser weight. This is all based on movies of the Titanic I've seen btw. If the front of the ship had a watertight compartment then yes the ship would've still stayed float if they had just hit the iceberg head on, cause even though that part was hit, they could quickly close it to prevent any water from leaking into rest of ship.
The Titanic had only a small number of watertight compartments that when closed quickly can prevent water from seeping through and filling up the entire ship. When the Titanic hit the iceberg, it punctured about 1 or 2 non-watertight compartments thus nothing could be done to stop the leak. The water would fill in from those compartments and slowly fill up the ship. Since the puncture happened near the front, the filling up of water would make the front of the ship heavier than the back...

@KorruptedDragon982 Actually engineers reviewing the Titanic's design think it may have split at a lower angle then portrayed in the film. Nothing confirmed of course but any splitting in two would be reasonable.
@Dracarot it's very plausible. It was 30,000 tons in the air after all. I don't think there really is a way to truly prove its exact angle. 45 degrees is the generally accepted theory of what angle it was at when it split.

B: with the new keel theory from '05-'06 it's very likely that not only did the compartments fill up from the gashes at the starboard side of the ship, but also from the bottom of ship where it is believed that the ice berg was even larger under water, grazing the Titanic, and causing such a noticeable collision among the passengers.
the sinking sequence is wrong it is also wrong in the movie. The stern angle is at 11-13 degrees I dont know where some of you get 45 degree angles the ship could not handle that kind of stress with over 25,000 tons of water at that angle for over 2 hours. The ship simulator is a disappointment. I am a maritime historian and there not much room here to write but learn about Titanic, not the movie or a simulator.

the sinking sequence is wrong it is also wrong in the movie. The stern angle is at 11-13 degrees I dont know where some of you get 45 degree angles the ship could not handle that kind of stress with over 25,000 tons of water at that angle for over 2 hours. The ship simulator is a disappointment. I am a maritime historian and there not much room here to write but learn about Titanic, not the movie or a simulator.
