Chris Botti is hot. His music takes you to a peaceful level that only a few true musicians can take you. This kind of music makes me yearn for the days when music was performed by "true artist".
I read somewhere that Chris Botti also studied Miles Davis' music, and at times I can hear some of it! Miles Davis (from the Blue Note era) remains the epitome of jazz and is often studied by current jazz musicians! I remember meeting Miles Davis at the age of 15, when he stopped by to visit with my Dad while playing at a gig in Detroit!! 40+ yrs later "Kind of Blue" is still a #1 seller.
Well I gotta agree with one thing ... it goes no where ... good groove and the tone is pleasing ... yeh it's smooth ... but it's not expressive when compared to the work of Chet or Miles. Perhaps the goals of all these players are so far removed that it's better not to compare. As an improviser Chris is not in the same street as the afore mentioned (and many many others) but that is not perhaps the guys goal ... bottom line he makes a lot of bread paying his horn.
@Arborwaychet I see what you mean CB vs. Chet/Miles...But Chris does what he wants to do and does it in a very very classy way...I love the music he plays..he's talented...individual tastes of course. Thanks for your comment.
I agree. It's like he has a band that happens to play smooth jazz and he's singing through that trumpet. The guys who think this is boring or bullshit are just technical freaks. they sound like shitty guitarists crying for chops and solos. madddd skillz be damned. it's about the music, and only the music.
listening to botti and other jazz gives you so much more than the mainstream pop crap that comes out today. Besides the rare true artist most of it is just throwaway junk that has no shelf life. Feel bad for young people who only listen to gimmicky pop and they never experience what moving real music is like and where it can take you.
To each his own girl. I can't compare him to Miles but his sound is very much like the beautiful intimate sound Miles had; but I wish he would venture outward, he plays too safe. A great sound to be sure ... I hope he gets more in your face jazz, not just pretty riffs and glisses. God bless all trumpet players!
His sound kinda made me feel like I was listening to some "Blue in Green" by Miles Davis but hey!he´s way too young yet and he´ll surely mature -let´s keep hoping. He´s very good though!
Agree. Botti has a great sound & plays expressively, but so much of his playing is so simple. I have yet to hear anything that really impresses me. Diz, Miles, Clifford, Fats, Blanchard, Wynton, Dave Douglas, Nat, Randy Brecker...all these guys played more interesting lines & took more chances, even with ballads - which Botti seems to play a lot. Please branch out, Chris, and show us what you're really capable of.
This is the sexiest musician I have ever heard. He plays the most romantic music, and is absolutely gifted with his trumpet. He is pretty much the only musician I listen to.
Go buy Sketches of Spain by Miles Davis...if you don't like it I will buy it off you. Just because I can't imagine you can like Botti and not like the guy who he...well who influenced him so heavily.
Miles will always be so influential on anybody who dares to bust and crack lips on that cruel instrument. Botti has a long way to go and it´s hopeful that he mentions Miles as guru, isn´t it great-Times they-are-A changin,,,I´m 49 and I heard a lot but Botti is real cool!
I have to admit after hearing a few more tunes that he is a superb musician. All kudos to him. Can you recommend another trumpet player that you can vouch for? I also admire Terence Blanchard, although Miles Davis is still number one because he lived longer. Chris Botti will go far, i hope. Regards from sunny and warm Brazil!

Ever heard the phrase"less is more"? You dont need a million screaming notes to be good. This guy has it nailed, and I love his "simple" playing

He's good I'm a trumpet player from New Orleans so I've met many great New Orleans musicians.
But why hasn't he cleared out the spit from his horn, I can hear that spit rattle.lol
Just an observation, but I love john he's great one of my favorite smooth jazz musicians.
