Neither Evans, nor Stabile, nor Taddei, nor Gobbi, although fine singers, are worthy of cleaning the bottom of Fischer-Dieskau's shoes in this role or any other. The person talking about "fach" has no clue as to what it actually means. Fischer-Dieskau is, without a doubt, the greatest singer of the 20th century, and one of the greatest musicians as well. Who else can even come close?
DFD was a great artist, so this piece is not without awards, despite the bad soundtrack. Nevertheless, since he was here singing well outside his fach, we have to decide whether the attempt was worthwhile. For me, in this piece at least and given DFD's stage presence and acting skill, it was:). I would, however, prefer a larger, meatier voice and darker timbre for Falstaff. Warren, MacNeil, Granforte, Straciarri (don't know whether the last 2 did it) come to mind -

I love Dieskau in the rep. It is a completely refreshing approach.
