I'm not sure there are five, but I can understand those who would say Lincoln is deserving of the honor. Perhaps other presidents who have shown great leadership durring their time and remain famous for it. Anyway, my point was not that there were better people to have a national holiday based on. It was simply that reasonable, non-racist people can believe there were better people for the honor for legitimate reasons.

I don't think racists can get away with bigotry because they know black people. But yeah, if one is going to do something as selfless as adopt a needy child who is black, I DO think it effective puts to rest any question as to whether or not that person is racist. I also don't believe that black Americans generally believe this. I'm just an observer from Canada, but I happen to know at least three personally who respect McCain as a moderate. He got a largely positive reception when he addressed the NAACP, even if he didn't get any of their votes.
